The Delhi High Court Thursday tagged the appeal of Enforcement Directorate, challenging acquittal of former telecom minister A Raja and others in a money laundering case arising out of the 2G scam, along with a similar petition filed by the CBI. Justice Najmi Waziri fixed ED's appeal for hearing on February 7, when the CBI's appeal against the acquittal of Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others is listed. When the court asked the status of trial court records of the case, the ED's counsel said that they are in the process of being digitalised. Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who represents both ED and CBI, urged the court to prepone the hearing in the CBI's appeal which has been listed for February, 2019. A married woman was allegedly raped by five men in lower Assam's Nalbari district, police said Thursday. The woman was on her way to a market in Nathkuchi village on Wednesday evening when the five men forcibly pulled her into their car and sped away to Korkabari area of Tihu town, police said quoting the woman's FIR. They allegedly raped the woman in two separate places and then dumped her near the forest area with her hands and legs tied, said the woman in her FIR filed at Tihu police station. The woman was rescued by local people who reported the incident to police, said Tihu police station officer-in-Charge (OC) Nabajit Talukdar. Police has arrested two of the accused, the OC said, adding a search operation has been launched to nab the absconding three other accused.
A man and his son have been arrested for allegedly abducting a 15-year-old girl from Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district to marry her to his other son, police said Thursday. Ghulam Ali and his younger son Abdul Ahad kidnapped the girl from Kansali area in a van on Wednesday night, they said. They were taking her to Kashmir, where Ali's elder son Riyaz Ahmed, who was in love with the girl, works, they said. The girl's parents lodged a complaint at the Mahore police station. Police chased the van and nabbed the kidnappers. The girl was rescued from the vehicle in Gool area, the police said. The girl told police that she did not want to marry Ahmed. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached valuables worth Rs 225 crores in Hong Kong belonging to fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.The total attachments in the scam case so far amount to Rs 4744 crore.Earlier, ED had seized and attached various immovable properties and valuables (Cut and Polished Diamonds) worth Rs 218.46 crore. These properties belonged to Modi, his uncle Mehul Choksi, his close aid Mihir Bhansali.The Directorate has already filed a prosecution complaint under Section 45 of PMLA, 2002 against Nirav Modi, Purvi Modi, Maiank Mehta, Neeshal Modi, Nehal Modi, Deepak Modi and 18 other accused for commission of offence of money laundering, defined under Section 3 and punishable under Section 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.
The Supreme Court on Thursday termed as "horrible", "scary" and "terrible" the details placed before it by the CBI in the Muzaffarpur shelter home case in which several girls were allegedly raped and sexually abused. The apex court perused the status report filed by the CBI and said that "shocking" details have emerged including that the girls being sedated. "What is this sedation on the children? What is this going on? This is terrible," said the court, observing that allegations levelled by CBI against the prime accused Brajesh Thakur were "very serious". A bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur also directed CBI and the Bihar government to file status report to explain the delay in tracing the whereabouts of former state minister Manju Verma's husband Chandrashekhar Verma. A court here on Thursday sentenced a 33-year-old man to life imprisonment for stabbing to death a colleague in Thane district of Maharashtra. District Judge H M Patwardhan sentenced Mohammad Dawood Illyas Shaikh to life imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him. According to Additional Public Prosecutor Ujjwala Moholkar, Illyas Shaikh worked at an embroidery unit in Kausa area of Mumbra in the district and had a dispute with another worker, Imran Shaikh. On April 13, 2016, he stabbed Imran to death within the premises of the embroidery unit. Eight witnesses appeared during the trial.

Turkey on Thursday urged Saudi Arabia to answer questions that remain over the murder of Riyadh critic Jamal Khashoggi, such as who ordered his killing and what happened to the body. Saudi authorities last week claimed Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor, was killed during a "brawl", and arrested 18 Saudis in connection with his death. But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this week said the "savage" murder had been planned, while Turkish media have published gruesome details of Khashoggi's alleged torture and decapitation. Saudi Arabia said Thursday the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul was "premeditated" based on information supplied by Turkey, state media reported. "Information from the Turkish authorities indicates that the act of the suspects in the Khashoggi case was premeditated," the public prosector said in a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

Two men were arrested in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba and Rajouri districts after intoxicant drugs were found in their possession, police said Thursday. A police patrol party intercepted a person on the highway at Vijaypur and upon inspection, found 445 intoxicant capsules (Parvon Spas Plus) on him, they said. The accused, Karan Singh, alias Nanak of Gagore (Vijaypur), was arrested on the spot and the contraband seized, officials said. A case was registered in this regard at the Vijaypur police station and an investigation launched, they added. Another person was arrested in the Kheora area of Rajouri after 110 bottles of intoxicant syrup (100 ml each of Codiene Phosphate) were seized from him, officials said. The accused was identified as Liaqat Ali of Mangota Thanamandi, they said, adding that a case was registered against him at the Rajouri police station.
A High Court has upheld an 18-month prison sentence for a woman convicted of blasphemy in Indonesia after complaining about the volume of a mosque's loudspeakers. The woman's lawyer, Ranto Sibarani, told The Associated Press on Thursday that the decision would be appealed to the Supreme Court. The ethnic Chinese woman, Meiliana, was sentenced in August, more than two years after her comments sparked rioting in her hometown Tanjung Balai on the island of Sumatra. In a conversation with the daughter of the caretaker of her neighborhood mosque, Meiliana had commented that the five-times-daily call to prayer was too loud. Indonesia's largest Muslim organizations have said her complaint wasn't blasphemy and have criticized her imprisonment.
A native of Pattukottai in neighbouring Thanjavur district has been arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on charges of helping a man having links with ISIS obtain a passport, police said here Thursday. M Shafeek Ahmed was arrested here on Tuesday and later produced before a NIA court in New Delhi, which remanded him to seven-day custody, they said. Ahmed had allegedly helped V K Shajahan alias Mohamed Ismail Mohideen with ISIS links, get a passport with forged documents. Shajahan had been deported by Turkish officials for his alleged involvement in ISIS activities in 2017 and arrested at the Delhi airport. Later, the case was handed over to the NIA, which carried out probe and arrested Ahmed for his involvement in it, sources said.
Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday condemned the "cowardly attack" on YSR Congress chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy at the Visakhapatnam airport and asked all agencies concerned to probe the matter thoroughly. Reddy, the leader of the Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, received a minor injury on his shoulder when he was attacked by a man with a sharp-edged object at the airport, according to official sources. "The unfortunate attack by an authorised employee of a licensed airport restaurant took place before the security hold area of Vizag airport, and the same will be investigated expeditiously," the Civil Aviation Ministry said in a tweet. A 21-year-old Indian man has been arrested in Thailand on Thursday for overstaying his visa and for allegedly providing loans with interest rates higher than the legal limit, according to a media report. Rakesh Yadav, was arrested by immigration police and officials from other agencies inside a petrol station in Phichit's Muang district while he was allegedly trying to collect interest from vendors at the station, The Nation daily reported. Police found that his visa had expired in late February. Police seized Thai baht 3,538 from him and a book with a list of his debtors. Yadav charged interest rates at 20 per cent per day, which is higher than the legal limit, police said.
