Woman worker shot dead in Shamli

A 30-year-old factory worker was shot dead by unidentified accused in neighbouring Shamli district early Thursday morning, police said. Mausam Devi was on her way to work when the incident took place, said Circle officer Shamli police station Ashok Kumar. The shooting has been recorded on CCTV and efforts are on to nab the accused, he said. The reason of her killing is unknown, Kumar said.

Prabhu asks agencies to probe attack on YSR Congress chief Reddy

Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu condemned the attack on YSR Congress chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy at the Visakhapatnam airport Thursday and asked all agencies concerned to probe the matter thoroughly. Reddy, Leader of Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, received a minor injury to his shoulder when he was attacked by a man with a sharp-edged object at the Visakhapatnam airport, official sources said. Prabhu termed the attack "cowardly"and said the guilty would be punished. "Shocked by attack on Mr Jagan Reddy, Asked all agencies to investigate matter thoroughly,including @CISFHQrs. Asked secretary civil aviation to fix responsibility," the minister tweeted. "I strongly condemn this cowardly attack, we will punish the guilty. Investigations are underway, started immediately," he further said in the tweet. Initial reports said the assailant was employed at the airport canteen but no official confirmation was immediately available. He has been taken into police custody.

Sarkozy loses appeal in illegal campaign financing case

In another judicial setback, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy lost an appeal Thursday against an earlier legal decision and could stand trial on charges of illegally financing his 2012 presidential campaign. A Paris appeals court confirmed a decision last year ordering Sarkozy to face a trial over alleged fraud during his failed 2012 re-election bid. Sarkozy's lawyer, Thierry Herzog, said his client will appeal the ruling to the Court of Cassation, France's highest court. The 63-year-old Sarkozy is facing allegations that his presidential campaign spent well above the legal ceiling of 22.5 million euros ($24 million) and tried to cover it up fraudulently. The claims center on whether the conservative leader was aware of alleged false billing and fraud linked to PR company Bygmalion, some of whose executives have admitted false accounting practices. INX Media case: Court extends interim protection to Chidambaram till November 29

The Delhi High Court on Thursday extended the interim protection of former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in connection with the INX media case.He has been granted interim protection from arrest till November 29.On September 28, the court had extended his interim protection from arrest till today.Chidambaram had filed an anticipatory bail plea seeking protection from arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).The Congress leader and his son, Karti, have been under the scanner of the CBI and ED in connection with the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to INX Media, a venture promoted by former media baron Peter Mukerjea and Indrani Mukerjea.The alleged irregularities took place in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Finance minister under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Seven held for stealing petrol from tankers in Muzaffarnagar

Seven persons were arrested for allegedly stealing petrol from tankers and 14,000 litres of fuel were seized from them, police said Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, special task force of the Meerut police nabbed the seven accused Wednesday from the Delhi-Pauri national highway near Sikhera under Miranpur police station area, Circle Officer (STF) Brijesh Singh said. They were siphoning off the petrol from the oil tanker in connivance with the tanker driver, he said. The seven accused were identified as Dushyant Kumar, Sonu, Gaurav, Yogesh, Gopal, Nikku and Shahnawaz.

Father of two jailed in France for feeding them on Coca-Cola

The father of two boys, aged three and four, has been jailed in France for feeding them nearly exclusively on Coca-Cola, the children's lawyer said. The father, who can "neither read, nor write, nor count, doesn't realise the seriousness of the situation and spent all his welfare money on alcohol," Carole Papon, a representative of the association French Victims 87, said Wednesday. Within a few days of welfare payments being made "the family had nothing to eat. They only had Coca-Cola to drink," she said. SC agrees to hear fresh plea seeking SIT probe against CBI officials

The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a fresh petition filed by advocate Prashant Bhushan seeking Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe against Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials, including its Special Director Rakesh Asthana.A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, however, has not given any date for hearing the petition. For nearly four years, 19-year-old Boda Rama Devi, a resident of Khammam district, had been missing. After searching for their beloved daughter for many days, the parents had lost all hope of finding her again. SC to consider PIL seeking SIT probe into graft allegations against CBI officials

The Supreme Court Thursday said that it would consider according urgent hearing to a PIL seeking court-monitored SIT probe into allegations of corruption against various CBI officials, including Rakesh Asthana, who was divested of his responsibilities as the agency's special director. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi considered the submission of lawyer Prashant Bhushan, appearing for NGO Common Cause that there were wider issues of corruption affecting the probe agency and the PIL needed to be heard urgently. The bench, which also comprised Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, asked Bhushan to provide details and said it would consider granting urgent hearing on the petition. Police: 2 killed at Kentucky grocery store

A male suspect fatally shot a man and a woman at a Kroger grocery store on the outskirts of Louisville, Kentucky, and then exchanged fire with an armed bystander before fleeing the scene, police said.
