An Indian man has been apprehended by the CISF at the IGI airport for allegedly illegally carrying foreign currency worth nearly Rs 13 lakh, officials said Wednesday. They said H Singh, scheduled to take a flight to Dubai, was intercepted by a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official on Tuesday at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) after some suspicious layers beneath his clothes were detected. The man had concealed 4,000 Swiss Francs, Euro 11,100 and 3,155 Dirhams under his clothes and he was subsequently handed over to the Customs authorities for further probe, they alleged. The total value of the currency seized from the man, who holds an Indian passport, is nearly Rs 13 lakh, they said.
Odisha Police have arrested more than 500 people in the two districts of Ganjam and Jajpur on the charge of gambling after raiding several gambling dens organised on the occasion of Kumar Purnima festival, a police officer said Wednesday. The police have already arrested over 500 gamblers in Ganjam district this week and has seized Rs 6 lakh in cash, the officer said. A report from Jajpur said that police arrested 11 persons on the charge of gambling after raiding a gambling den in Bharatpur area on Wednesday. Police also seized three bikes, six mobile phones and cash of Rs 5,325 from their possession. The National Green Tribunal has rapped the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) for failing to notify areas here on the basis of groundwater availability. Taking strong exception to non-compliance of its order, a bench headed by NGT Chairperson justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the Secretary of Ministry of Water Resources to personally appear before it on November 12 and show cause why action should not be taken for defiance and non-compliance. The tribunal noted there was total apathy on the part of the CGWA in not preforming its statutory duties and in failing to notify the areas which are over exploited, critical and semi-critical; and also in not regulating such areas. A man was arrested here for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in a slum area in the city, police said Wednesday. The minor girl's family lodged a complaint of rape on Tuesday against Amit Gupta (27), resident of Colony number 4 here, they said. According to the family members, they came to know about the incident when the minor girl complained of abdominal pain and was taken to a hospital, where tests showed she was pregnant, police officials said. The victim told police that the accused had repeatedly raped her over a couple of months, they said. The National Green Tribunal has taken note of a plea alleging encroachments in a Mughal-era fort at Badshapur in Gurgaon and directed the deputy commissioner of the area to look into the matter. A bench, headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, ordered the official, along with the Haryana Pollution Control Board and Archaeological Survey of India, to look into the allegations and take appropriate action in accordance with the law within two months. "A report of the action taken may be furnished to this tribunal by an email on or before January 31, 2019. The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to hold an urgent hearing of a review petition filed by historian Romila Thapar against its verdict that refused a Special Investigation Team-led (SIT) probe into house-arrests of five activists in Bhima Koregaon case.The court, in its verdict, had also allowed Maharashtra Police to continue with the investigation.Thapar along with four other activists had earlier filed a petition in the top court against the house-arrest of the five activists in Bhima Koregaon violence.On September 28, the Supreme Court had turned down the request of the petitioners to set up an SIT to probe into the case and extended the activists' house arrest for four weeks.The five activists, namely poet Vara Vara Rao, lawyer Sudha Bhardwaj, activists Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, and Gautam Navlakha, have been under house arrest since August 29 for their alleged involvement in the violence which took place on January 1.The five accused were arrested from various cities .
A 102-year-old man in Australia has been booked after he allegedly indecently assaulted a 94-year-old woman in an old age home, media reports said Wednesday, in a rare incident involving a person above 100 years of age. The elderly man and the woman are the residents of the Bupa Aged Care Facility Queens Park situated in the Waverley suburb of Sydney, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Police said that the assault took place around 12.30 PM on Tuesday, when officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command were called to the facility. A special investigative team (SIT) caught two persons with about one kilo of charas in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district Wednesday, a police official said. Acting on a tip-off, the SIT caught Indu Devi of Obri Mohalla and her accomplice Dharam Singh of Malog village, said Chamba Superintendent of Police Monica Bhutunguru. The SP said 968 gram of charas had been recovered from their possession. The two were arrested and a case was registered against them under relevant sections of NDPS Act at Chamba Sadar Police Station, she said, adding that further investigation was on.
Lt Col Prasad Shirkant Purohit, accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast, has moved the Bombay High Court challenging a special court's order rejecting his plea against the sanction for his prosecution under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). A special NIA court had last week rejected the pleas filed by Purohit and other accused - Pragya Singh Thakur, retired Major Ramesh Upadhyay, Sameer Kulkarni, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi and Sudhakar Chaturvedi - challenging the validity of the anti-terror law in the case. The court had said that on October 26, it would frame charges against the accused under the UAPA and relevant sections of the IPC. Purohit Tuesday moved the high court against the lower court's order and said it was "wrong" and "bad in law". His petition is likely to be taken up for hearing on Thursday by a division bench of the high court. A youth was shot dead by bike-borne assailants at Jamalpur locality on Anoopshahar Road here, police said Wednesday. The deceased Shavez (21) was shot on Tuesday night. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead, they said. After shooting the victim several times, the assailants tried to scare the onlookers with shots in the air, officials said. According to the police, the shooting, which was witnessed by a large number of bystanders, was connected with a long-standing gang feud between two splinters groups of the original Muneer gang. The Co-founder of Unicoin, engaged in banned crypto currency exchange, has been arrested, days after he launched a Bitcoin ATM kiosk at a mall here in violation of RBI norms, police said Wednesday. 37-year old Harish B V 37, hailing from Tumakuru in Karnataka, was arrested Tuesday and two laptops, a mobile phone, a device for crypto currencies and Rs 1.79 lakh cash were seized among others from him, they said. Harish, who had set up his firm Uncoin Technologies Private Limited to undertake business in virtual currency, had inaugurated the ATM kiosk in a city mall last week without permission from the competent authorities, police said.
