CBI vs CBI: SC to hear Alok Verma's petition on Friday

The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear the petition filed by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Alok Verma challenging the Center's decision to send him on leave.The top court will hear the matter on October 26.Verma's lawyer Gopal Sankaranarayanan, told the apex court that the Centre's decision will comprise the investigation into many sensitive cases.The CBI chief has also challenged the decision to appoint Joint Director M Nageshwar Rao as the Director of CBI in his place.In an order dated October 23, M Nageshwar Rao was appointed as the interim Director of the CBI with immediate effect.Ra0, a 1986 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Odisha cadre, was working as the Joint Director in the investigating agency.The Centre's decision came a day after Asthana moved to Delhi High Court seeking the quashing of FIR filed by CBI against him and Deputy Superintendent of Police Devendra Kumar.The CBI had claimed that Kumar was part of an extortion racket being .

Drug peddler arrested with 3,312 intoxicant tablets in Kathua

An alleged drug peddler was arrested with 3,312 intoxicant tablets in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district on Wednesday, police said. A police party intercepted a man, identified as Makhan Singh, in Lakhanpur area and seized 3,312 intoxicant tablets from his possession, they said. He was arrested and a case has been registered against him, they said.

Two guards of pvt university held for selling drugs to students

Two private security guards working at the Amity University here have been arrested for allegedly selling cannabis to students and others, police said on Wednesday. The guards, Naveen Mishra and Santosh Singh, are both local residents and in their 30s. They were held late on Tuesday night outside the Sector 125 campus, a police official said. "Mishra was held with 1.25 kg cannabis, while Singh was carrying 1.2 kg cannabis when they were arrested at 11.45 pm on Tuesday," Station House Officer (SHO) of Knowledge Park police station Arvind Pathak said. Pathak said the police were getting complaints about the illegal sale of drugs from the area under the Knowledge Park police station limits. "We have arrested six drug traffickers from our area in the recent times," the SHO added. Meanwhile, the Amity University said the arrested guards were employees of a private security agency hired by the varsity and it has a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs. Goa: Two brothers who raped their niece for last 10 yrs held

Two middle-aged brothers were arrested Wednesday for allegedly raping their niece for the last ten years since the time she was a teenager, the police said. The accused duo, now in their 40s, had been raping the woman (now 23) since the time she was 13-year-old, said a Porvorim police station officer. The woman, who is a member of a joint family living in Verem village near here, decided to break her silence now and approach police because the sexual abuse continued till recently, said Porvorim Police Inspector Paresh Naik. A case has been registered against the accused under sections 376 (Punishment for rape) and 355 (Assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person, otherwise than on grave provocation), besides under Goa Children'as Act, he said. Indian suspect in Lanka prez assassination plot alleges frame-up

An Indian national arrested for possible links to an alleged plot to assassinate Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has told a court that he is innocent saying the police are trying to frame him in the case. Marceli Thomas appeared in court before the Colombo Fort magistrate on Tuesday. Thomas said in a written statement that he is innocent but the Sri Lankan police's criminal investigation department was trying to implicate him in the plot. He said he had been under detention for 34 days and as a result his health had deteriorated. Thomas was arrested late last month following a complaint by Namal Kumara, who claimed he was representing the Anti-Corruption Force, and who had alleged a plot to assassinate Sirisena and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the former top defence ministry bureaucrat and brother of ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa. 70-yr-old woman raped by relative: Police

A 70-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a distant relative here, police said Wednesday. A first information report (FIR) was lodged Tuesday on the basis of a complaint from the woman, they added. The woman, a resident of Rampur, had come to Dhakiya Ranvas village under the Sidhauli police station and was allegedly raped by a distant relative here on September 28, station in-charge Birja Ram said. The police have registered the second FIR in a week against Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, this time for allegedly making defamatory remarks against Dalit icon B R Ambedkar two years ago. Guj: Swaminarayan sect priest held for rape

A priest associated with the Swaminarayan sect here in Gujarat was arrested Wednesday for allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman on two occasions under the pretext of offering money for her mother's surgery, the police said. The accused Nikunj alias Karan Swarupdas Babubhai Savani (24) had allegedly raped the woman, a local resident, around a fortnight ago in a room adjacent to the Swaminarayan temple at Dabholi under Katargam police station and again on October 23, a police official said. HC fines man for humiliating estranged wife; quashes FIR as woman forgives

A man, who allegedly created fake online accounts on commodity sites in his estranged wife's name to humiliate her, has been slapped with Rs 1 lakh cost by the Delhi High Court, which quashed the FIR against him as the woman showed 'big heart' and forgave the husband. The man gave description of his wife through these accounts on websites used for sale and purchase of commodities expressing desire for a companion, following which she received humiliating messages, as per the FIR. In the high court, the man's counsel claimed that the FIR against him was an offshoot of a matrimonial dispute and sought the quashing of the FIR. 2 women killed in truck-motorcycle collision

Two women were killed when the motorcycle they were travelling on was hit by a speeding truck near Michauni Ki Madhaiya village under Sahaswan Police Station here Wednesday, officials said. Koregaon Bhima case: HC sets aside Pune court order giving more time for chargesheet against lawyer

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday set aside a Pune court that had granted more time to the police for filing a charge sheet against lawyer Surendra Gadling and some other activists arrested in connection with the violence at Koregaon Bhima village in the state. A single-judge bench of Justice Mridula Bhatkar held that the Pune court order granting the police an additional 90 days to file the charge sheet and consequently extending the custody of Gadling and others was "illegal". While Justice Bhatkar's verdict paves the way for Gadling and other activists to be released on bail, the judge stayed her own order from becoming operational till November 1, following a request from the Maharashtra government, thus giving time to the state to file an appeal in the Supreme Court. HC sets aside AAP govt circular allowing Registrars to cancel registrations

The Delhi High Court has set aside an AAP government circular empowering Registrars to cancel registration of documents, saying the Supreme Court has made it clear that they do not have such powers. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao quashed the July 13, 2016 circular of the Delhi government on the ground that it was in violation of the Registration Act of 1908. The circular had laid down the procedure to be followed on receiving a complaint of fraudulent registration through impersonation or by producing false documents. It had also allowed the Registrar to cancel the registration of a document in question if it was found that it was done by fraudulent means. Guj govt writes to MHA over death of fisherman in Pak jail

The Gujarat government has written a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), urging it to initiate a process to bring back a state fisherman's body from Pakistan, where he died in a jail last month. Gujarat Fisheries Commissioner K R Patni said the state government wrote the letter to the MHA on Tuesday. Nanubhai Kanabhai Solanki (45), a fisherman from Karjadi village in Una tehsil in the state's Gir Somnath district, was arrested by Pakistan maritime authorities on November 11 last year for allegedly straying into the neighbouring country's waters. A postcard dated September 30 sent by Vijay Vaja, Solanki's cellmate, informing about the latter's death was received by the deceased's wife last week. Vaja wrote that Solanki had died in a jail in Karachi on September 15. Five people held for sexually assaulting and branding minor

: Five people including a 16-year old boy were arrested for sexually assaulting and branding a minor girl near Thiruvaiyaru in the district, police said Wednesday. The 14-year old girl, a school dropout was sexually assaulted by the boy from Kudithangi last week, police added. Meanwhile, M Kannan (29) and his brother M Mahendran (35) from a nearby village, accused the girl of stealing their mobile phone and tied her up to a tree and assaulted her, police said. Kannan also sexually harassed her, they added. The brothers along with S Sivakumar and Vidhya, a woman from the area, branded the girl with an iron rod, police said. The girl managed to escape and hid herself in a plantain grove. Later, she informed her father, who admitted the girl to Thiruvaiyaru government hospital. The girl's father filed a complaint with the all-women police station in Thiruvaiyaru on Monday following which the five were arrested.
