The Delhi Police on Tuesday said it has arrested one of the masterminds of the "bloody clash" in Rajasthan's Bharatpur in which two people were shot dead and 14 others sustained severe injuries.
The Maharashtra government Tuesday urged the Bombay High Court to dismiss the plea filed by arrested lawyer Surendra Gadling, in which the latter challenged the extension of his custody. A central excise Goods and Services Tax (GST) inspector was arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a businessman in Rajasthan's Alwar district, an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said Tuesday. The accused officer, Shayar Singh, had demanded Rs 4 lakh as a bribe from complainant Lokpal Saini for not taking action against him related to his GST evasion. The deal was settled at Rs 3 lakh, the official said. Singh was arrested Monday night for allegdly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh by Alwar ACB sleuths here. A case was registered against the accused under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and further investigation is on in the matter, police said.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and four juveniles were apprehended for allegedly killing a man and robbing his phone in outer Delhi's Aman Vihar area, police said Tuesday. The Jharkhand High Court has ordered a CBI probe into the Palamau encounter in which 12 alleged Maoists were shot dead by the police on June 8, 2015. The father of one of the deceased had filed a petition in the court alleging that those killed were not Maoists and the encounter that took place at Bakoria in the state's Palamau district was fake. A 19-year-old woman was set on fire allegedly by her in-laws for dowry in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, police said Tuesday. She succumbed to burn injuries on Monday night, they said. A 54-year-old German man has been convicted of attempted murder for poisoning baby food and putting it on store shelves in a failed attempt to extort money from supermarkets. German news agency dpa reported the man was sentenced in Ravensburg state court late Monday to 12 years in prison. His name wasn't released in line with privacy laws. Last fall, the man sent emails threatening to poison food at German retailers unless some 10 million euros (USD 11.5 million) was paid. Authorities said the suspect then alerted authorities that five jars of baby food at shops in Friedrichshafen had been tampered with. Officials located the jars before any were sold and found they contained ethylene glycol, a compound used in anti-freeze. DNA on the jars and surveillance footage led to the suspect.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police Tuesday claimed to have solved the blind murder of a truck driver, with the arrest of a man in Kathua district, saying he was killed over some old rivalry. Kuldeep Singh, who hailed from Haryana, was found unconscious with a head injury in Samba district here on the intervening night of October 3 and 4. He later died, a police spokesperson said. "During inquiry, it came to light that the driver was murdered by his accomplice, Anoop Kumar, and accordingly a murder case was registered and a massive hunt launched to nab him," he said. The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the CBI to maintain status quo on the criminal proceedings initiated against its special director Rakesh Asthana, who has challenged the FIR lodged against him on bribery allegations. Although the CBI cannot arrest Asthana till October 29, the next date of hearing, the high court clarified that there is no stay on the probe considering the nature and gravity of the case.
