Policeman's son held for assaulting cop

A 27-year-old man, son of a police officer, was arrested for allegedly assaulting a policeman at Kalyan in Thane district of Maharashtra, an official said Thursday. The incident took place Wednesday night and the accused was identified as Abhijit Shinde, police said. "Assistant police inspector (API) A M Khatib attached to MFC police station was on Dassehra bandobust duty at Shivaji chowk last night along with other policemen when a shopkeeper drew their attention to a man, who was beating up a girl," a police official said. "The police team rushed towards them and tried to rescue the girl. When they asked the man why he was beating her, he started abusing them and asked them to mind their own business. Man killed in Pratapgarh over property dispute

A 32-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by some unidentified persons in Pure Dinanath village in Lalganj area here, police said Thursday. The incident took place Wednesday night when Shivshankar was shot at his home. "The killing might be the outcome of an ongoing property dispute in the family," Circle officer Lalganj OP Dwivedi said. Shankar was rushed to a hospital nearby where he died during the treatment. His body has been send for postmortem, police said. Police are yet to register an FIR in the case.

Veterinary doctor arrested in Pakur for forcing religious conversion on girl

A senior veterinary doctor has been arrested from Pakur district in Jharkhand on charges of forcing religious conversion on a minor girl, a senior police officer has said. A case was registered against the veterinary doctor under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Jharkhand Anti-Conversion Act, 2017 on the basis of the statement of the girl's father on Monday last, Superintendent of Police, Shailendra Prasad Burnwal said Wednesday. Taking cognizance of the matter, the police conducted raids at Sawanlapur village on Tuesday, arrested the veterinary doctor-cum-flying animal husbandry officer and rescued the 13-year-old girl from the village, where a religious meeting was on. Muzaffarnagar woman killed over dowry

A 28-year-old woman was allegedly poisoned to death by her in-laws over dowry demand at Nawla village in Muzzafarnagar, police said Thursday. Circle Officer Rajive Kumar Singh said a case has been registered against the woman's husband Nitin kumar, father in-law Rakesh, mother in-law Dulari and brother in-law Sachin. He said they are absconding. Minu married Nitin four years ago. In his complaint lodged with the police, Baburam, the father of the deceased, has said his daughter was being harassed for a motorbike and cash as dowry. Former USA Gymnastics president arrested for alleged tampering

Former USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny, who resigned from his post last year, was arrested in connection with the Larry Nassar molestation scandal, US media reported. The arrest on Wednesday came after Penny was indicted three weeks ago by a grand jury on felony charges of allegedly tampering with evidence in the sexual assault investigation of former gymnastics doctor Nassar, the Huntsville Item newspaper reported. Penny was arrested by a police task force in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and is awaiting extradition to Texas, prosecutors said in a press release Wednesday night. 116 policemen suspended over 2014 firing in Pakistan

Pakistan authorities have suspended at least 116 police officials, including top officers, in connection with the killing of people during a public protest here in 2014, according to a media report. 2 dead as truck hits their motorbike

Two persons were killed when their motorbike was hit by a truck in Chitbadgaon area here, police said Thursday. Woman begins climbing Sabarimala hill amid protests

A woman, said to be a Delhi-based journalist of a foreign media outlet, began trekking to Sabarimala hill amid protests by devotees opposing the entry of girls and women of menstrual age into the hill shrine. 7 arrested in connection with death of guard in failed robbery bid

Days after a 50-year-old security guard of a cash van was killed after unidentified persons opened fire at the vehicle in east Delhi's Mayur Vihar, police have arrested seven men, including the employee of the firm ferrying the money. The accused have been identified as Sunil (28), Mohit (24), Kapil (25), Sachin (40), Bijender (28), Sandeep (25) and Parvesh (27), police said. The failed robbery bid took place on October 8 at DND flyover in Mayur Vihar. Several men in two cars intercepted the cash van carrying Rs 4.2 crore and opened fire, leading to the death of the armed guard present inside the cash van. The accused Parvesh is an employee of the firm ferrying the money, while Sandeep is a former employee of the same firm, police said. The accused were identified after scanning the CCTV footage. Man sentenced to more than 24 years for Texas mosque fire

A man convicted of torching a South Texas mosque last year has been sentenced to more than 24 years in prison. Marq Vincent Perez was sentenced Wednesday during a court hearing in Victoria, Texas. In July, a jury convicted the 26-year-old Perez of federal arson, explosives and hate crime charges. Mark Di Carlo, Perez's defense attorney, didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment. At his trial, prosecutors said that a "rabid hatred" of Muslims led Perez to set fire to an Islamic center in Victoria, destroying the building. Authorities asserted Perez aimed to terrorize Muslims along the middle Texas Gulf Coast and to cause damage and destruction. Meerut police probing into "rape" of girl by her brother: Cops

The Meerut police is probing into an allegation of repeated gang rape of a 15-year-old girl by her two brothers, who are on the run, an official said Wednesday. Boy slips into Sanjay Lake, drowns

A 16-year-old boy drowned Wednesday in DDA's Sanjay Van Lake in south-west Delhi's Vasant Kunj, police and fire department officials said. He had gone with his friends to the lake, the police said, adding the boy slipped into the water body. His body was fished out later by a team of divers, who were informed about the incident around 3 pm, an officer said. The victim was identified as Shahid Ali, a resident of Mehrauli, the DFS officer said.
