LONDON (Reuters) - Tanzanian authorities have charged three of Acacia Mining's local subsidiaries, an employee and a former staffer for money laundering and tax evasion, the gold miner said on Wednesday.
Four Army personnel have been booked for allegedly raping and molesting a 34-year-old speech and hearing-impaired woman employee of a military hospital at Khadki near Pune in 2015, police said Wednesday. The case came to light when the woman contacted an Indore-based sign language expert through video call in June and narrated the incident. Besides the police, Army too is conducting a 'court of inquiry' against the four personnel, who worked in the same hospital at the time. The alleged offence took place between January and June 2015 at the Military Hospital - Kirkee in Pune's Khadki suburb. The woman has been working at the facility since 2014. A man was shot dead by unidentified gunmen near a Durga puja pandal at Chinsurah in Hooghly district and five persons have been arrested in this connection, police said on Wednesday. The incident happened at Chawkbazar area under the jurisdiction of Chinsurah police station on Tuesday night, they said. Four miscreants on two motorbikes chased Biswajit Biswas (25) and shot him in the head, a police officer said, adding, he died on the spot. Puja revellers near the area fled the scene after hearing gunshots, the officer said. Five persons have been held in connection with the incident, Commissioner of Chandernagore Police Commissionerate, Ajay Kumar said. The officer said according to preliminary investigation, previous enmity is suspected to be the reason behind the killing. Police have also recovered a pistol from the crime scene.
Police on Wednesday used a bomb disposal robot and carried out a controlled explosion on a package found in central London near the British parliament. Although the package was later found not to be suspicious, emergency services were called to gardens next to the River Thames during the afternoon, a police spokesman said. The Bombay High Court Wednesday refused bail to a man, arrested last year after a video showing two Dalit boys being beaten up and paraded naked for allegedly trying to pilfer a snack item went viral. Justice A M Badar rejected the appeal filed by Irfan Pathan, one of the three accused. Pathan had moved the high court after the trial court rejected his bail plea. The offence was a very serious and there was ample evidence against the accused, the judge noted. The accused has been charged with a "worst form of child abuse", the HC said. Three persons were arrested and two separate attempts of bovine smuggling were foiled in Rajouri and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Wednesday. Three persons, travelling in a mini truck, were arrested after they broke a police checkpoint during a bovine smuggling bid in Rajouri district, a police official said. He said a police party during routine highway checking signalled the vehicle to stop at Solki on Jammu-Rajouri road last night. "The driver of the vehicle broke the checkpoint and endangered the lives of cops. On this, all checkpoints were put on alert and the vehicle was intercepted at Dharamsal," the official said. A 23-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in a bank robbery in southwest Delhi's Dwarka, in which a cashier was killed, police said. The accused, identified as Narender, was arrested from Najafgarh, they said. One double barrel gun with two live cartridges robbed from a security guard of the bank and a motorbike used in the crime was also recovered from his possession, police said. Earlier, Two men, Sachin (20) and Parvesh (19) both residents of Haryana's Khewra village were arrested in connection with the incident, they said. Former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell will go on trial for money laundering in February, Spanish judicial sources revealed on Wednesday. Rosell, his wife and four others are accused of "large-scale money laundering" of at least 19.9 million euros ($23 million) since 2006 relating to television rights and sponsorship in Brazil. Prosecutors at the Madrid-based National Court have called for the ex Barca boss to be jailed for 11 years and fined 59 million euros. Rosell and his wife are accused of hiding money illegally obtained by Ricardo Teixeira, the former head of the Brazilian Football Confederation. Rosell had previously lived and worked in Brazil, where he forged numerous business links. The case centres on a deal signed by Teixeira in 2006 with a company based in the Cayman Islands for the television rights to 24 Brazil friendly matches. The victims of an attack on a technical college in Moscow-annexed Crimea on Wednesday were killed by gun shots, Russian investigators said after initially reporting they died in a blast. "Currently, there are 17 known deaths. The initial inspection of the bodies suggests that they died from gunshot wounds," Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement. It added that a surveillance video showed a man entering the school "holding a gun" and identified him as 18 year-old student Vladislav Roslyakov, whose body was later found in the building. A 40-year-old man has been arrested and fake Indian currency notes with a face value of Rs 60,000 seized from him in Shahdara's Anand Vihar area, police said Wednesday. The accused, Mohammad Hussain, is a resident of the Nabi Karim area in Paharganj here, they added. Police had received information that Hussain, who was previously involved in other fake note cases, was supplying counterfeit notes in Delhi-NCR again, a senior officer said. On Tuesday, Hussain was nabbed red-handed from Anand Vihar where he had come to supply fake notes in the denomination of Rs 2,000, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said. During interrogation, Hussain disclosed that he had come in contact with members of a fake currency supplier group. One person had met him in Paharganj and offered him huge profits in return of circulating the fake currency in the market, Yadav said. Unit-11 of the Crime Branch busted the racket which operated from Bengaluru, the police official said. A 13-year-old local girl was allegedly raped by a 40-year-old labourer on three occasions in the last fifteen days, the police said Wednesday. The accused, identified as Jagdish Kumawat, has been arrested, a police officer said. The incident came to light Tuesday when the girl, a student of class 7, narrated her ordeal to her mother. "Police have arrested Jagdish Kumawat, a resident of Narsinghpura area of Mandsaur," said City Superintendent of Police (CSP) RM Shukla. Kumawat lured the girl, a daughter of a labourer, with chocolates on October 3 and took her to Herdarwas forest outside Mandsaur, where he raped her, the officer said, adding that the accused dropped her home after committing the crime. A businessman was arrested here Tuesday by the Karnataka commercial taxes department for allegedly evading GST of Rs 42 crore by raising fake invoices of Rs 245 crore in the name of deceased and fictituous people. Preliminary investigation revealed that Mangilal obtained four GST registrations in the name of fictitious persons and issued invoices to the tune of Rs 245 crore, evading GST of Rs 42 crore, the commercial tax department in a press release. In one case,the officials found he was operating a trading company in the name of a woman who passed away in 2016. After her demise, the registration was opened under GST, two current accounts were opened in her name and crores of Rupees withdrawn. He had issued fake tax invoices in the name of Devi Trading company without supplying goods or services, the release said. Mangilal was later produced before a special court for economic offences, which remanded him to judicial custody.
