Mumbai: 4 arrested for attack on Sena MLA, contractor booked

Four persons were Tuesday arrested in connection with an attack on Shiv Sena MLA Tukaram Kate in Mankhurd here last week, police said. Anushakti Nagar MLA Kate was attacked by a group of people, armed with a sword, chopper and hockey stick, late night on October 12. While Kate escaped unhurt, one of his supporters suffered injuries while fending off the attack. The attackers had fled after one of Kate's bodyguard pointed his service revolver at them, police said. Trombay police identified those arrested for the incident as Sachin Khandagale (31), Mangesh Sawant (26), Vishal Khandare (24) and Suraj alias Sataku Karke (25). A police official said that Mahesh Londhe, a contractor carrying out work related to the construction of a metro rail corridor in the area, had allegedly planned the attack. Gujarat HC gets four new judges

Four new judges were on Tuesday appointed to the Gujarat High Court, including three judicial officers and a lawyer. A notification issued by the Law Ministry here said advocate Umesh Amritlal Trivedi, and judicial officers (judges of the lower courts) Ajaykumar Chandulal Rao, Vireshkumar Bhavchandbhai Mayani and Ashutosh Pushkerray Thaker have been appointed judges of the Gujarat HC. Yesterday, four new judges, all from the Bar, were appointed as judges of the Delhi High Court. As on October 1, the Gujarat HC was functioning with 27 judges, short of 25. It has an approved strength of 52, a Law Ministry data states.

Indian-origin man jailed for handling 19 stolen vehicles in UK

An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to eight years in jail by a UK court for handling of 19 stolen high-value vehicles worth over 7,00,000 pounds. Chirag Patel, 39, was found guilty of conspiracy to handle stolen goods and possession of criminal property at the end of a five-week trial at Croydon Crown Court last Friday. "Patel played the leading role in a sophisticated operation to handle high-value, stolen vehicles, motivated only by sheer greed," said Acting Detective Sergeant Billy Clough, who led the investigation for the Metropolitan Police. "He even attempted to convince the jury that he was a legitimate businessman, who had simply been unlucky in obtaining such a vast quantity of stolen items, but the jury saw through this and convicted him of being the key player in a significant criminal enterprise," he said. Mumbai: Man arrested for sexually assaulting minor on rly FOB

A man has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a schoolgirl on a foot overbridge at Mahim station last week, a railway police official said Tuesday. Senior inspector Shailendra Dhiwar of Mumbai Central railway police station said that the incident happened on October 10 and the accused, identified as Paramjeet Singh (47) was arrested on October 13. "At around 6:30 am on October 10, two girls were waiting on the FOB at Mahim station to go to school at Prabhadevi. The accused touched one of the girls inappropriately who later narrated the incident to a guardian who had come to drop them to school," the official said. The girl's guardian took the girl to a doctor who in turn asked them to approach the police, he said. Bovine smuggling bids foiled in J-K, three arrested

Three suspected bovine smugglers were arrested and 35 animals rescued as police Tuesday claimed to have foiled three bovine smuggling attempts in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Two trucks illegally transporting 14 animals towards Kashmir were intercepted at Nagrota in the outskirts of Jammu, a police official said. He said both the drivers were arrested and a case under relevant sections was registered against them. Police rescued 11 more bovine animals from another suspected smuggler in the Mahore area of Reasi district, the official said, adding the accused was arrested and a case registered against him. In a separate incident, a truck illegally transporting 10 bovine animals was intercepted in Samba district and the animals rescued, he said. However, the driver managed to escape and efforts are on to arrest him, the official said.

DRI seizes dugs worth Rs 65 lakh in Manipur

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized contraband drugs worth over Rs 65 lakh in Manipur, according to an official statement issued Tuesday. Acting on inputs, the DRI officials in coordination with the Assam Rifles intercepted a car coming from Moreh to Imphal and detained its two occupants. The officials recovered several polythene packets containing light brown powder, suspected to be brown sugar (narcotic substance), from a carton which was kept in the boot-space of the said vehicle, it said. The examination of these packets resulted in recovery of 650 grams of brown sugar valued at Rs 65 lakh, according to the statement. The Two, natives of Manipur, have been arrested. They were produced before the chief judicial magistrate, Chandel, who remanded them to judicial custody, it said.

NGT fines Delhi govt Rs 50 cr for inaction against illegal steel pickling units

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) Tuesday fined the Delhi government Rs 50 crore for its "failure" to take action against steel pickling units in residential areas as they fall under the prohibited list of industrial activity. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel rapped the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for not closing the industrial units despite its specific directions. The bench said discharge of untreated effluent discharge directly or indirectly in the river has caused serious damage to the environment and the Polluter Pays Principle needs to be invoked to compensate the damage caused. "We impose cost of Rs 50 crores on the Delhi government for its inaction and failure resulting in creating lawlessness and also damaging the environment and the public health. Victim of child sexual abuse can file complaint any time irrespective of present age: WCD Ministry

The Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) on Tuesday said that is no period of limitation with regard to reporting of child sexual offences under the POCSO Act, 2012."Now any victim, at any age, can complain the sexual abuse faced by him/her as a child", said CD minister Maneka Sanjay Gandhi. She urged the victims to report the cases through POCSO e-Box.The WCD had recently consulted Ministry of Law in view of the overriding provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act over other criminal laws and provisions of mandatory reporting of such offences. The Ministry of Law after examining the provisions of POCSO Act vis-a-vis provisions of CrPC advised that there appears no period of limitation mentioned in Section 19 in regard to reporting of the offences under the POCSO Act, 2012, the WCD ministry said in a statement.It is often found that children are unable to report such crimes as the perpetrator in most cases is either a family member, a relative .

Police probe in 1984 riots case was tainted: CBI to HC

The CBI on Tuesday told the Delhi High Court that the police investigation into the alleged role of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case was "tainted" as it had tried to favour the politician. The submission by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was made before a bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel which was also told by the agency that the police kept in "hibernation" the FIRs lodged during the riots in the hope that the affected people will reconcile and settle the matter. Senior advocate R S Cheema, the special public prosecutor for CBI, said the probe by Delhi Police was "tainted" as "FIRs were kept in hibernation, hoping that people would reconcile and settle the matter". Medical representative shot dead in UP

A medical representative was shot dead by unidentified assailants near Harichetpur village in Mandhata area here, police said. The 26-year-old medical representative identified as Bagrang Bahadur Singh was shot at this evening and was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment, they said. Stray dogs maul 4-yr-old to death in JK's Samba dist

A four-year-old girl was bitten to death by a pack of stray dogs outside her home in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday, police said. The minor was attacked by the canines soon after she came out of her house at village Chack Bogala in Ramgarh area of the district this morning, a police official said. Woman commits suicide in Noida, in-laws booked in dowry case

A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide here Tuesday, police said. The deceased was identified as Kunti. Her brother Ravindra Kumar has alleged Kunti's husband and mother-in-law had killed her for dowry, police said. Based on Kumar's police complaint, Kunti's husband Pankaj was arrested and her mother-in-law Sridevi was booked under Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, they said. Kunti married Pankaj, 25, on May 25 this year in Mainpuri district. The two moved to Noida recently. The family was living at Garhi Chaukhandi village, under Phase 3 Police Station limits, police said. "Her in-laws were not satisfied with whatever we gave them (at the time of marriage). 131 vacant posts in Himachal Pradesh University will be filled soon: V-C

As many as 131 vacant posts of teachers will be filled in the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) soon, its Vice Chancellor Sikander Kumar said Tuesday. A case regarding recruitment in the university is pending in the Supreme Court. The vacant posts will be filled after the verdict is pronounced, Kumar said. Sexual assault case: Daati Maharaj moves SC against transfer of case to CBI

Self-styled preacher Daati Maharaj, accused in a sexual assault case, has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court's order transferring the matter to the CBI. The high court had on October 3 pulled up the Delhi Police for not arresting Daati Maharaj in the case and had transferred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Former finance minister Ishaq Dar's property in Pakistan has been confiscated and efforts to extradite him are underway, the Supreme Court was informed on Tuesday. "NAB has confiscated the properties," the additional attorney general told the apex court. The development comes a day after an accountability court asked the Punjab government to confiscate three plots owned by Dar, his spouse Tabassum and son Ali Mustafa, Dawn reported. Absconding industrialist extradited from Indonesia

Absconding industrialist Vinay Mittal, wanted in seven bank fraud cases worth Rs 40 crore, has been extradited to India from Indonesia, officials said Tuesday. His name had figured in the list of prominent fugitive economic offenders of the Government which contained names of Vijay Mallya, Nitin Sandesara, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Jatin Mehta among others. The agency had registered cases against Mittal in 2014 and 2016 on the request of Corporation Bank and Punjab National Bank, which is reeling under Rs 13,000 crore bank fraud allegedly perpetrated by Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, they said. The agency had filed seven charge sheets in courts of Delhi and Ghaziabad against him after which he purportedly escaped from the country, they said.
