DNA evidence links serial rapist to 2010 rape-murder of two

A 34-year-old suspected serial child rapist and molester arrested last month has been found to be allegedly involved in the rape and murder of two minor girls in 2010 here, a police official said Tuesday. The Navi Mumbai police cracked the eight-year-old cases with the help of DNA evidence that linked the alleged serial rapist, Rehan Abdul Qureshi, to the twin crimes that took place in Mumbai's suburb of Nehru Nagar, he said. Qureshi was arrested from Mira Road in adjoining Thane district by the Navi Mumbai police. DNA samples of Qureshi matched with the samples taken from the bodies of the two victims, the official said. As many as 950 DNA samples were tested before Qureshi's samples matched with those of the victims, Tushar Doshi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Navi Mumbai, said. Rampal sentenced to life imprisonment in murder case

A court here on Tuesday sentenced self-styled godman Rampal and 14 of his followers to life imprisonment in connection with a murder case. Hisar Additional District and Sessions Judge D R Chaliya pronounced the quantum of sentence in the case which was lodged on the complaint of one Shivpal of Mithapur near Badarpur in Delhi. The court awarded life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs one lakh each under section 302 (murder) of the IPC, two-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 under section 343 (wrongful confinement) of the IPC and life imprisonment and a fine of Rs one lakh each under section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. Cops in 6 cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, to conduct crime scene videography

In a giant leap towards digitisation of criminal investigation, police in six major cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, will mandatorily conduct videography of a crime scene, the Centre has told the Supreme Court. Besides Delhi and Mumbai, the other cities where videography of crime scenes would be mandatory are Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chandigarh. The top court had in April asked the Centre to prepare a plan for introducing videography in criminal investigations to strengthen the rule of law. Taking the lead, the Gujarat Police has set up a central server which is connected to a specially designed application called "Mobile Pocket Cop". The app can be downloaded on a cell phone provided to every police station for use in an investigation. 65-yr-old doctor assaulted, robbed of cash and valuables in Delhi

A 65-year-old doctor was allegedly assaulted and robbed of cash and valuables by four unidentified men in northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar area, police said Tuesday. The victim, identified as P K Batra, is a resident of Premanand Colony here, they added. The incident occurred on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday when the four men barged into Batra's house and fled away with cash and other valuable items after thrashing him, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest) Aslam Khan. On Tuesday at around 12.30 am, Mohit, the victim's son, called police after he along with his mother returned home and saw his father lying on the bed with his hands tied, Khan added. The accused persons had also stabbed him, the DCP said, adding that he was taken to a hospital, where his condition was stated to be stable. Body of missing woman found floating in Chambal river

The body of a 33-year-old married woman, who had gone missing, was spotted Tuesday in the Chambal river in Rajasthan's Kota city, police said. The woman, Pratim Tiwari, a resident of Panchvati Nagar here, had gone missing from her paternal house since Monday evening, they said, adding that her body was recovered this morning by a rescue team from the Kota Municipal Corporation (KMC). "Initial inquiry suggests that the woman might have committed suicide. However, no suicide note was recovered," Dadabari police station ASI Shaheed Hussain said. The woman had been living at her paternal house in Dadabari since Raksha Bandhan this year, away from her in-laws' house in Kunhari, the ASI said. US consulate car injures motorcyclist in Pak

A US consulate car being driven by a woman hit a motorcycle in Pakistan's port city of Karachi, injuring the rider and triggering protest from the passers-by, police said Tuesday. The incident occurred near a flyover after which passers-by surrounded the vehicle. The motorcyclist, who received wounds to his foot, was shifted to a hospital, The News reported. The passers-by encircled the US consulate vehicle which was being driven by a woman, who was later identified as a staff member at the US consulate, the report said. Earlier in April, a military attache had rammed his vehicle into a motorcycle in Islamabad, killing one man on the spot and injuring the other. NSUI president resigns after sexual harassment allegation

The National Student's Union of India (NSUI) president Fairoz Khan on Monday stepped down from his post over the sexual harassment allegation leveled against him.Congress president Rahul Gandhi has accepted Khan's resignation, sources said adding Khan is likely to take legal action in the matter.Four months back, a woman office bearer of NSUI filed a complaint against Khan alleging that he sexually harassed her in a hotel room when they were in Bengaluru for an event.Following the complaint, Khan came under the scanner as the All India Congress Committee formed a committee to look into the matter. Former BSP leader's son brandishes gun at Delhi 5-star hotel; police registers FIR

The son of a former BSP MP was booked for allegedly brandishing a gun at guests and threatening them in the foyer of a five-star hotel here, a video of which went viral on social media. The accused, Ashish Pandey, hails from Lucknow and is the son of former BSP MP Rakesh Pandey. His brother, Ritesh Pandey, is a sitting MLA in Uttar Pradesh. The Delhi Police said an FIR has been registered under the Arms Act and sections of the IPC, including those related to causing hurt (323), criminal intimidation (506) and using force with the intent to outrage the modesty of a woman (354). Man gets life imprisonment for killing wife in 2010

A Delhi court has awarded life imprisonment to a man for murdering his wife in 2010, noting that she died an unnatural death in her matrimonial house. Additional Sessions Judge Surinder Kumar Sharma said circumstances strongly indicate that Bihar native Rakesh Kumar Srivastva was responsible for the death of his wife and held him guilty of murder under section 302 (murder) of the IPC. Guj: Unable to pay maintenance, man leads procession to court

A man walked at the head of a procession comprising kin and friends to get himself arrested after citing inability to pay a maintenance amount of Rs 95,500 to his former wife, Vadodara police said Tuesday. Hemant Rajput (36) had earlier been ordered by a family court to pay Rs 3,500 per month as maintenance to his former wife under the divorce agreement formalised between them, police said. The unpaid amount had accrued to Rs 95,500 over a period of time, an official added. "On Monday, Rajput came on the shoulder of his friend in a procession which included his parents to the police station to get himself arrested. Law Ministry endorses removal of time limit to report child sexual abuse: Maneka Gandhi

The Law Ministry has endorsed a proposal of the Women and Child Development Ministry to remove the time limit for reporting child sexual abuse, WCD Minister Maneka Gandhi said Tuesday. Maneka Gandhi had, on October 3, written to Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad asking him to remove the time limit for reporting child sexual abuse and allow people to complain even "10-15 years later". She told reporters that the Law Ministry has agreed to their proposal and endorses removal of time limit for reporting such crimes. The further course would be soon decided, a senior WCD official said. Under Section 468 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), any offence, including child abuse, which can lead to a prison term of three years has to be reported within three years of the incident. According to Section 473 of the CrPC, a court may take cognisance of an older case if it is in the "interest of justice" or if the "delay has been properly explained". Woman throws 5 children in well in Guj; 4 of them drown

Battling poverty, a woman allegedly threw her five children into a well, leading to the death of four of them, before she herself jumped into it in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district, police said Tuesday. The woman and one of her children survived in the incident which took place Monday night at Panchpipla village in Bhavnagar, an official at Alang police station said. The woman appeared mentally disturbed and claimed "she saw ghosts whenever she closed her eyes," he said. Gitaben Bhalia (40) left her home at Royal village in Bhavnagar Monday evening after telling her husband Dharamsinh Bhalia that she was taking her five children to visit a temple at the nearby Panchpipla village, he said. 20-yr-old man gets life term for raping toddler

A 20-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here for raping a one-year-old girl at Secunderbad in 2016. Deep Singh, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, was held guilty by the First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge-cum-Special Judge for trial of cases under the POCSO Act on Monday. Holding that the offence committed against a tender baby was heinous, the court refused his prayer for a lenient view and sentenced him to life imprisonment, the public prosecutor said. The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 on Singh, who was convicted under the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code. According to the prosecution, the accused was working with the victim's father, who is into corn vending business, and staying in his house. On September 6 night, Singh had taken the baby girl who was sleeping with her mother to a bathroom and raped her.

200 kg of doda post seized in Udaipur dist

Nearly 200 kg of doda post (a kind of opium) was seized from a car in Rajasthan's Udaipur district, police said Tuesday. The accused, who was driving the vehicle, did not stop at the check post near Jadoli Crossing on Udaipur-Sirohi National Highway on Monday night, they said.
