Let's ensure politics of compassion prevails over politics of hate: Cong

The Congress on Gandhi Jayanti on Monday vowed to "expose" the "total hypocrisy" of those who appropriate Gandhian symbols and project his legacy to the world, "but are simply unable and unwilling to uphold the values he championed." The opposition party also resolved to work towards the victory of "truth over lies", and ensure that the politics of compassion prevails over the "politics of hate, vengeance and prejudice." The Congress paid rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge hailing him as not just an individual, but an ideology and the moral compass of the country. Congress chief Kharge paid floral tributes at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial at Rajghat here. In a post on X, he said, "Mahatma Gandhi ji is not just an individual, he is an idea, an ideology and the moral compass of our great nation." BJP's 'fake nationalism' visible: Kharge on new armed forces pension rules

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday slammed the BJP over the new disability pension rules for armed forces personnel, alleging that its "fake nationalism" is yet again visible through the move. The Narendra Modi government is a "habitual offender" in working against the welfare of jawans, ex-service personnel and veterans, he alleged in a post on X. According to media reports, the All India Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association has strongly protested against the new policy on disability and death benefits of defence personnel and their widows. The policy was made public on Wednesday by the Ministry of Defence. In his post on X, Kharge said, "BJP's fake nationalism is yet again visible in the new disability pension rules for our brave Armed Forces!" Around 40 per cent of Army officers retire with disability pension and the change in the present policy will flout multiple past judgments, rules and acceptable global norms, he said. Kharge slams PM Modi on Manipur issue, demands sacking of 'incompetent' CM

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the situation in Manipur and demanded that he sack BJP's "incompetent" chief minister as a first step to control the turmoil. He also alleged that the violence against women and children has been weaponised and accused the BJP of turning Manipur into a battlefield. A clash occurred in the Singjamei area of Imphal on Tuesday night between RAF personnel and locals protesting the killing of two students, who had been missing since July 6, prompting the law enforcers to lob tear gas shells and fire rubber bullets at the agitators and baton-charge them, leaving 45 of the protesters, mostly students, injured. "For 147 days, people of Manipur are suffering, but PM Modi does not have time to visit the state. The horrific images of students being targeted in this violence has once again shocked the entire nation," he said on X. "It is now apparent that violence against women and children was ...

Unite and overthrow 'dictatorial' govt to save democracy: Kharge to leaders

Batting for unity and organisational discipline, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday asked party leaders to prioritise the success of the party putting aside personal differences and take on adversaries with full might in the upcoming state and Lok Sabha elections. Addressing the extended CWC meeting on the second day of deliberations, Kharge said the party's goal must be to defeat the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and work diligently to form an alternative government in the country. In a scathing attack on the Modi government, Kharge accused it of playing politics and distracting and diverting people from basic issues by bringing new ones. "Recently, during the Mumbai meeting of INDIA alliance, Modi government formed a committee on 'One Nation, One Election'. In contravention of all conventions, it also included a former President to fulfil its agenda," Kharge said. He noted that elections in five states are scheduled in the next two to three months, while the Lo

Congress leaders call for adopting cautious approach on Sanatan Dharma row

Amid a raging row over DMK leaders' remarks on Sanatan Dharma, some Congress leaders on Saturday called for a cautious approach on the matter and the party not getting drawn into the BJP's agenda. Sources said some leaders, including Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh, said at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting that the party should stay away from such issues and not be drawn into it. Rahul Gandhi said that instead of getting involved in the Sanatan Dharma row, the leaders should focus on the poor and their issues as they have been the party's traditional vote bank, the sources said. He said the party should raise the issues of the poor, irrespective of their caste, according to sources. The sources said that during the CWC meeting, both Baghel and Singh pointed out that speaking on the Sanatan Dharma row would hurt the party and will help the BJP. When asked about the matter at a party briefing, senior par

Free, open discussions to take place in CWC, Cong hails internal democracy

The Congress on Saturday said "free and open" discussions would take place during the CWC, asserting that its internal democracy is what makes it different from other parties. Addressing a press conference here ahead of the reconstituted Congress Working Committee's (CWC) first meeting, Congress media and publicity department head Pawan Khera also hailed as "historic" the election of Mallikarjun Kharge as the party president last year in internal polls. "No other party in this country has had this kind of an open election. We are very proud of our tradition of electing our president through an open election," he said. That is another "historic milestone" that we achieved in the last year, Khera said. "When we meet today in a few hours from now in the CWC, there will be an open discussion. Everybody is free to voice his or her opinion, suggestion, or criticism. That is the way our party functions, that is the way the blood in the veins of our party stays fresh and boiling," he ...
