Govt holds all-party meet on Manipur to discuss current situation

An all-party meeting, convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, began here on Saturday to discuss the prevailing situation in Manipur. Nearly 120 people lost their lives and over 3,000 have been injured ever since the ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3. Leaders of different political parties, including the BJP, Congress, Trinamool Congress, Left parties and others, are taking part in the meeting. Violent clashes broke out in Manipur after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Shah had visited the state for four days last month and met a cross section of people in his efforts to bring back peace in the northeastern state. Opposition parties have been criticising the government for its handling of the situation as violence has not stopped even after 50 days.

Shah enough to handle Manipur, no need of PM Modi: Fadnavis to Uddhav

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah was enough to handle the situation in violence-hit Manipur and there was no need for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the north-eastern state for that purpose. His statement comes days after Shiv Sena (UBT) president and former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray targeted PM Modi, asking why he was undertaking a tour of the US instead of visiting Manipur to restore peace there. Fadnavis once again credited PM Modi for taking initiative in developing anti-coronavirus vaccines in India and said it was because of him all 140 crore citizens of the country were administered doses free of cost or else "crores of people would have died". Addressing a rally at Karad town in Maharashtra's Satara district, Fadnavis said without naming Thackeray, "A few days back, a leader from Maharashtra said that PM Modi is visiting America but not Manipur. I would like to tell him that our Union minister ...

Any effort for peace must take place in Manipur: Cong on all-party meet

The Congress on Thursday termed the all-party meeting convened by Home Minister Amit Shah on the Manipur situation as "too little, too late," and said efforts to bring warring factions on the discussion table will lack seriousness if they are done sitting in Delhi. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said the entire nation expects a serious intervention from the Union Government. "Any effort for peace must take place in Manipur, where the warring communities are brought on the discussion table and a political solution is arrived at. This effort will lack seriousness if it is done sitting in Delhi," he said on Twitter. After 50 days of death and destruction in Manipur, he said, "Home Minister Amit Shah's call for an all-party meeting is too little, too late". The government only woke up after Sonia Gandhi's address to the people of Manipur, he said. Shah has called an all-party meeting on the situation in Manipur on June 24. "At the outset, the PM's absence from such a serious

Attempts being made to create Manipur-like situation in Maharashtra: Patole

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Wednesday targeted the Centre and the Eknath Shinde-led state government, saying that attempts were being made to foment unrest in the society and create a Manipur-like situation in the state. He was addressing party workers at Kalyan in Thane district. Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence since the first week of May, in which several people have lost their lives. "Through various incidents of social unrest, an attempt is being made in Maharashtra to trigger riots and create a situation like Manipur," he said. "Incidents of social unrest are taking place one after the other in the state. If democracy and the Constitution are to be preserved in the country, then there is no alternative to the Congress. Its policies and policies show that the BJP has nothing to do with the people of the country," Patole said. The Congress worked towards strengthening the country, he said, accusing the Narendra Modi government of selling assets of

50 days since Manipur burning, PM completely failed in his duty: Congress

The Congress on Wednesday said it has been 50 days since Manipur is burning and alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has "totally and completely failed" in his duty by choosing to deliberately ignore the violence-hit state in the time of crisis. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also accused the BJP-led government of "maximum silence, minimum governance" in Manipur. "Let us remind ourselves amidst all the news of the Prime Minister's visit to the USA that today is the 50th consecutive day of Manipur's pain, distress and agony. "The Prime Minister who gives 'gyaan' on so many issues has sadly not said a word on the tragedy that has engulfed the state, has not given an appointment to representatives of political parties who sought time from him, and has given no indication whatsoever that he even cares or is concerned," Ramesh wrote on Twitter.
