PM Modi's presence at G7 summit a 'reflection of global leadership': Carney

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's attendance at the G7 summit is a reflection of the size and dynamism of the Indian economy and the leadership position India plays, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said. Carney held bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the margins of the G7 summit here in Canada on Tuesday. In terms of Prime Minister Modi's attendance at the G7, Prime Minister Modi has attended every G7 since 2018, which is a reflection of the size of the Indian economy, the dynamism of the Indian economy, Indian technology, the leadership position India plays in a host of venues from G20 and beyond, Carney said at a press conference as the G7 Leaders' Summit wrapped up here. So as chair of the G7, hosting the prime minister in that context is entirely natural, entirely consistent. I fully expect the Prime Minister, the Prime Minister of India, will be in attendance at the G7 next year, Carney said. Carney described his bilateral meeting with Modi as ...

Canada to hit Nato spending target early, reduce reliance on US: PM Carney

Canada will meet NATO's military spending guideline by early next year and diversify defence spending away from the United States, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Monday, asserting that Washington no longer plays a predominant role on the world stage. The announcement means Canada will achieve NATO's spending target of 2 per cent of gross domestic product five years earlier than previously planned. Our military infrastructure and equipment have aged, hindering our military preparedness," Carney said. Only one of our four submarines is seaworthy. Less than half of our maritime fleet and land vehicles are operational. More broadly, we are too reliant on the United States. According to NATO figures, Canada was estimated to be spending 1.33 per cent of GDP on its military budget in 2023, below the 2 per cent target that NATO countries have set for themselves. Canada previously said it was on track to meet NATO's target by the end of the decade. Our goal is to protect Canadians, not to

After Canada PM Carney's invite, PM Modi confirms attendance at G7 summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he will attend the G7 summit in Canada this month after receiving an invitation from his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney during their first phone conversation. Carney's invitation to Modi to attend the outreach sessions of the G7 Summit signalled Ottawa's intent to repair the ties with New Delhi that plummeted to an all-time low over the killing of a Khalistani separatist. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Modi and Carney acknowledged the "deep people-to-people ties between India and Canada and reaffirmed their commitment to work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests". It said Modi conveyed that he looks forward to their meeting at the summit. Prime Minister Modi accepted the invitation that came over a week before the summit of the influential grouping kicks off. The summit will be held in Canada's Alberta province from June 15 to 17. It is learnt that the phone call was initiated by the

S Jaishankar, Canadian counterpart hold first call, discuss economic ties

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand held their first phone conversation on Sunday that focused on deepening the bilateral economic ties and advancing shared priorities. Anand assumed charge as Canada's foreign minister this month in Prime Minister Mark Carney's new Cabinet. He led the Liberal Party to its remarkable victory in the parliamentary elections last month. Carney's election victory was seen as an opportunity to repair ties between India and Canada that came under severe strain during the prime ministership of Justin Trudeau. "Discussed the prospects of India-Canada ties. Wished her a very successful tenure," Jaishankar said in a social media post. Anand said she had a "productive discussion" with Jaishankar. "Thank you Minister @DrSJaishankar for the productive discussion today on strengthening Canada'?India ties, deepening our economic cooperation, and advancing shared priorities. Canadian PM Carney names Indian-origin Anita Anand as foreign minister

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a major Cabinet shakeup, including naming Indian-origin Anita Anand as the new foreign minister, on Tuesday as he shapes a newly re-elected Liberal government. Carney, who replaced Justin Trudeau earlier this year and won election last month, named Anand foreign minister, replacing Mlanie Joly, who becomes the minister of industry. Anand previously served in roles including defence minister. Franois-Philippe Champagne retains his job as finance minister, while Dominic LeBlanc remains minister of US trade at a time of a trade war between Canada and the United States. Carney won the job of prime minister by promising to confront the aggression toward Canada shown by US President Donald Trump, while preserving the calm demeanour of an economist who has led the central banks of both Canada and the United Kingdom. Canadians elected this new government with a strong mandate to define a new economic and security relationship with the United ..

Trump, Carney clash over tariffs, 51st state during meeting at Oval Office

US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney faced off in the Oval Office on Tuesday and showed no signs of retreating from their gaping differences in an ongoing trade war that has shattered decades of trust between the two countries. The two kept it civil, but as for Trump's calls to make Canada the 51st state, Carney insisted his nation was not for sale and Trump shot back, time will tell. Asked by a reporter if there was anything Carney could tell him to lift his tariffs of as much as 25 per cent on Canada, Trump bluntly said: No. The US president added for emphasis, Just the way it is. Carney acknowledged that no bit of rhetoric on tariffs would be enough to sway Trump, saying that this is a bigger discussion." There are much bigger forces involved, the Canadian leader continued. And this will take some time and some discussions. And that's why we're here, to have those discussions." The meeting between the two leaders showcased the full spectrum of Trum

Canadian prime minister's Liberals fall short of majority in Parliament

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberals celebrated election victory in a stunning turn of fortune but fell short Tuesday of winning an outright majority in Parliament, and the party will have to seek help from other another, smaller party. The vote-counting agency Elections Canada has processed nearly all ballots in what turned out to be a razor-close race that will leave the Liberals three seats short of a majority. Recounts are expected in some districts. Carney's rival, populist Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, was in the lead until US President Donald Trump took aim at Canada with a trade war and threats to annex it as the 51st state. Poilievre not only lost his bid for prime minister Monday but was voted out of the Parliament seat that he held for 20 years. That capped a swift decline in fortunes for the firebrand Poilievre, who a few months ago appeared to be a shoo-in to become Canada's next prime minister and shepherd the Conservatives back into power for the fir

Liberals win Canada election amid Trump trade war, statehood threat

The Liberal Party has won the federal election in Canada, culminating a process marked by US President Donald Trump threats on a trade war and of making the country the 51st American state. With this result, the Liberal Party's leader and current prime minister, Mark Carney, will remain in the job, and will form a new government with a new cabinet. It's still unclear if the liberals will have a majority in the Parliament or whether they will need to look for alliances with other parties. Here's what to know and what comes next: Who did Canadians vote for? Canadians voted for all 343 member of the House of Commons, one for each constituency. The winning candidates were those who finished first, whether or not they won a majority of the votes. A party needs 172 seats in Parliament for a majority. When will Canada have a new prime minister? The prime minister is chosen by parliament rather than elected directly by the voters. Historically, the party that assembles a majority in
