SC grants two weeks more to expert panel to file report on NEET-UG reforms

The Supreme Court on Monday extended by two weeks the time granted to the Centre-appointed seven-member expert panel to file its report on exam reforms after reviewing the National Testing Agency's functioning in holding the NEET-UG. The top court on August 2 had passed its formal order and expanded the remit of the seven-member expert panel, headed by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief K Radhakrishnan, to review the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and recommend exam reforms to make the controversy-ridden NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate), transparent and free from malpractices. The NEET-UG is conducted by the NTA for admission in undergraduate medical programs. The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the much-awaited results of the UGC National Eligibility Test on Thursday, with 1,12,070 candidates qualifying for PhD admission.Additionally, 53,694 candidates have cleared the exam for the post of Assistant Professor, while 4,970 have secured eligibility for the prestigious Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).This year's UGC-NET saw 11,21,225 candidates register for the exam, out of which 6,84,224 appeared.The re-test was conducted over 11 days, from August 21 to September 5, 2024, across 280 cities in India.The exam covered 83 subjects and was held in 21 shifts using Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.Along with the results, NTA has also released the subject/category-wise cut-off list for UGC NET Result 2024.The UGC NET is conducted to determine the eligibility for 'Assistant Professor' as well as 'Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) & Assistant Professor' positions. SC refuses entertaining plea against govt decision to cancel UGC-NET exam

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a fresh plea filed by some examinees challenging the government's decision to cancel the UGC-NET examination following alleged question paper leak, saying that entertaining it at this stage will create "chaos". A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said the government is conducting the exam afresh on August 21 and the students, who are around nine lakh, must have some kind of "certainty now". "The Supreme Court stepping now will have a serious effect and there will be chaos all over," the CJI said while declining to entertain the plea filed by Praveen Dabas and others. The bench said the exam was held on June 18 and was cancelled a day after that. "Entertaining the plea at the present stage would only add to uncertainty and add to utter chaos," the CJI said, adding the Central government must be "doubly cautious after the NEET-UG fiasco and thus it was cancelled. Private member resolution seeking repeal of NEET, NTA introduced in RS

A private member resolution asking the government to bring a law to remove education from the concurrent list, and repeal NEET and NTA to allow states to conduct medical entrance tests was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. Counselling for NEET-UG to start from Aug 14, registration in first week

The counselling for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 will start from August 14, according to an MCC notice issued on Monday. However the registration for the process of counselling is likely to start from the first week of August, Dr B Srinivas, Secretary of the National Medical Commission (NMC) said. The candidates are advised to visit the MCC website for the latest news and notices for counselling. "The counselling will take place for the allotment of approximately 1.10 lakh MBBS seats in around 710 medical colleges across the country. Also, the counselling will be held for 21,000 BDS seats besides Ayush and nursing seats," Srinivas said. The MCC will conduct counselling for the 15 per cent all-India Quota seats and 100 per cent seats of all AIIMS, JIPMER Pondicherry, all central university seats and 100 per cent deemed university seats.
