Neeraj Chopra sets sights on Olympic record to go with his golden feat

Star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Wednesday said that he has set his eyes on breaking the Olympic record to go with his gold medal winning feat at the Tokyo Games. Neeraj, who has a personal best of 88.07m metres, clinched the historic gold with a throw of 87.58m in his second attempt at Tokyo Games. The Olympic record stands at 90.57m set by Andreas Thorkildsen in Beijing 2008 and Neeraj said it would be great to add one more feather to his cap. "An Olympic gold medal is the ultimate. But in athletics, you can add one more thing to your gold medal an Olympic record, the 23-year-old said during his maiden trip to Kolkata after becoming the first ever Indian to win an Olympics gold in athletics. "I've the national record standing at 88.07 metres, while the Olympic record is 90.57. If I can go a step further then it would be an Olympic gold with a personal best and an Olympic record, he said about his target. Neeraj is here on a two-day visit for a private felicitation .

Chopra fulfils one more dream, takes his parents on maiden flight

Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra fulfilled his one more dream when he took his parents on their maiden flight journey on Saturday. Chopra along with his parents Satish Kumar and Saroj Devi were on their way to an event organised by his promoter JSW Sports at the Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) in Bellary, Karnataka. "A small dream of mine came true today as I was able to take my parents on their first flight," Chopra tweeted with pictures of him and his parents on board a plane. Besides Chopra and his parents, his coach and German biomechanics expert Klaus Bartonietz and Olympian super heavyweight boxer Satish Kumar were also seen seated inside the aircraft. The 23-year-old Chopra had created history when he won India's maiden Olympic medal in athletics -- a javelin gold in the recently-concluded Games in Tokyo.

Pune stadium to be named after Olympic Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra

A stadium in the premises of Army Sports Institute in Pune is to be named after Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra.The stadium will be named as 'Neeraj Chopra Army Sports Stadium' in Pune Cantt.The official naming ceremony of the stadium is scheduled for August 23 and will be carried out by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Singh will be accompanied by the Army chief General M M Narvane and Lieutenant Governer JS Nain on this tour.On his visit, Singh will facilitate the other sixteen Olympians and will be carrying out a naming ceremony of the stadium. He will also be addressing the troops and will interact with budding sportsmen.Neeraj's historic golden throw in the Olympics has been listed as one of the 10 magical moments of athletics (track and field) in the Tokyo Olympics by World Athletics.He has been felicitated by the Indian Government, the Sports Ministry, the Athletic Federation of India as well as the Indian Army post his return.

Javelin coach Uwe Hohn on his way out as his contract ends: Sources

Former world record holder and national javelin coach Uwe Hohn is on his way out as his contract, which runs till the end of Tokyo Olympics, is unlikely to be extended further. The 59-year-old German was appointed as chief coach in November 2017 for one year to train the likes of Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopa, other Tokyo Olympians Shivpal Singh and Annu Rani. "He (Hohn) is on way out. His contract is unlikely to be extended by SAI (Sports Authority of India)," a source privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity. It is learnt that Hohn, whose 104.80m throw in 1984 led to change in javelin design in 1986 and restarting of world records, had demanded 50 per cent hike in his salary, which is to be tax-free, besides first class air tickets. His original contract was worth Rs 1.09 crore a year, plus boarding, lodging, medical facilities and leave travel. He wanted to increase it to Rs 1.64 crore a year when the contract was up for renewal in October ...
