Cong to hold CWC meet on Oct 9 in Delhi, discuss strategy ahead of polls

Congress' top decision making body CWC will meet on October 9 here to deliberate on the current political situation, caste census and further firm up the strategy for the upcoming assembly elections in five states. The party is seeking to retain power in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, while hoping to wrest power from the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, BRS in Telangana and the Mizo National Front (MNF) in Mizoram. The meeting is likely to have a discussion on the caste census. The Congress has made a strong pitch for the caste census and has raised the demand for giving rights on the basis of population with emphasis on other backward classes (OBCs). The CWC meet also comes at a time when some opposition leaders are facing heat from central agencies. Water level in Teesta currently below danger mark, no flood situation: CWC

The water level in the Teesta river was below the danger mark at 1 pm on Wednesday and there is no flood situation around it, according to Central Water Commission data. Three people died and 23 Army personnel were washed away earlier in the day after a cloudburst over the Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim resulted in a flash flood in the Teesta River basin, which was aggravated by the release of water from a dam, officials said. According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level at three stations Melli, Singtam and Rohtak on the Teesta is below the danger mark but hovering near it. The water level at station Melli is 214.63 metres, while the danger level is 224 metres, it showed. "It has a rising trend. Water level is below warning Level. So, there is no flood situation around Melli," the CWC said on its app. The current water level at station Singtam is 351.31 metres while the danger level is at 355.09 metres. India has asked Canada to recall 41 of its diplomats from the country by October 10, the Financial Times newspaper reported on Tuesday. Neither India nor Canada reacted to the report that came 12 days after New Delhi asked Ottawa to downsize its diplomatic presence in India. Canada has 62 diplomats in India and New Delhi said that the number should be reduced by 41, the report said. The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. India rejected the allegations as "absurd" and "motivated" and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa's expulsion of an Indian official over the case. Resolutions under insolvency law likely to touch 300 this year: IBBI chief

The number of resolutions of stressed assets under the insolvency law is likely to touch 300 this year, IBBI Chairperson Ravi Mital said on Sunday and urged resolution professionals to speed up the cases. Creditors have recovered around Rs 3 lakh crore through the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) and the recoveries stood at more than Rs 51,000 crore last year, when the number of resolutions rose 80 per cent to 180, Mital said. He was speaking at an event to mark the seventh annual day of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) in the national capital. The IBBI is a key institution in implementing the IBC. Mital said the IBC is a factor in the reduction of non-performing assets and emphasised that the law is not a recovery mechanism but a resolution mechanism. Till August this year, 135 resolutions have happened and the number is likely to touch 300 by year-end, Mital said and asked resolution professionals to increase their speed for faster resolutions. India will host the 46th edition of the Pacific Asia Travel Association Travel Mart at Pragati Maidan in Delhi from October 4-6, the Union Ministry of Tourism said on Saturday. The physical version of the event is being held after a hiatus of three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said, adding that the PATA Travel Mart 2023 will be held at the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC). New Delhi examining Afghan embassy's purported communication on closing ops

The Afghan embassy in India has purportedly come out with a communication on closing down its operations and New Delhi is examining its authenticity, sources said on Thursday. The embassy has been headed by Ambassador Farid Mamundzay and it is learnt that he is currently in London. Mamundzay was appointed by the previous Ashraf Ghani government and he has been operating as the Afghan envoy even after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021. The Afghan embassy in New Delhi has purportedly issued a communication on this issue, the sources in the Indian government said on reports of the embassy closing down its operations. "The authenticity of the communication and its contents are being examined," one of the sources said. Fire incident: MCD orders survey of PGs in all wards of Civil Lines Zone

Civic authorities have ordered a survey of paying guest facilities located in all wards of the Civil Lines Zone here in the wake of a fire incident at a PG facility in an apartment in Northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar, officials said on Thursday. Thirty-five people, one of them a four-year-old girl, were rescued by firemen from a blaze that engulfed the apartment on Wednesday evening. The fire started from an electric metre in the stilt area where old furniture and a rickshaw were parked, according to a report received from the site, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi said in a statement. Directions have been issued to the zonal building department to open their office on Thursday, and to "conduct a survey of PGs in all wards of the Civil Lines Zone" of the MCD, it said.
