Former New Zealand cricketer Ian Smith has questioned the readiness of his country's team in the T20 World Cup, saying it looked rusty and completely disorganised in the humiliating defeat against Afghanistan. New Zealand suffered an embarrassing 84-run loss to Afghanistan in their tournament opener here on Friday. They were dismissed for 75 in their chase of 159, with Rashid Khan and Fazalhaq Farooqi grabbing four wickets each. The Kiwis are placed fifth and last in Group C and will next play the West Indies in Trinidad on Wednesday with the negative net run rate making their task of qualifying for the knockouts an uphill task. "They've got to beat the West Indies, and hope that they (West Indies) get beaten by Afghanistan, because New Zealand's run rate situation is so poor - we're going to be very behind the eight ball when it comes to that," Smith, who has played 63 Tests and 98 ODIs, told Sen Radio on Monday. "I just don't know they're going to get up to speed from the flat ..
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson on Saturday termed his side's 84-run defeat against Afghanistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup as "incredibly frustrating" and urged his teammates to move on quickly from the reversal. New Zealand struggled against Rashid Khan (4/17) and Fazalhaq Farooqi (4/17) while getting bowled out for 75 in 15.2 overs while chasing 160. "Incredibly frustrating performance. We certainly did prepare to the best of our ability. So, no excuses. For us, it's moving on quickly. "We know we've got a match in a few days and it's about putting out a better performance," Williamson said in the post-match press conference. In their second Group C match, New Zealand will face co-hosts West Indies at Trinidad on June 13. Williamson said the Kiwis would hit the boardroom soon to find a way to dish out a better performance against the two-time champions. "We're going to have to sit down. We are going to have to have a chat and review a little bit and then move on quickly .
With two wins in two games, Afghanistan are just one win away from locking a place in Super 8 round from Group C. Two top teams from each team will qualify for the next round, which begins on June 19

The England and Wales Cricket Board on Tuesday announced a three-Test tour to New Zealand starting at Christchurch on November 28. After the series opener at Hagley Oval, the tour will move to the North Island for tests in Wellington from December 6-10 and in Hamilton from December 14-18. The last time the Test teams met in February and March of last year, they split a two-match series after England was on the verge of a 2-0 victory when skipper Ben Stokes enforced the follow-on. New Zealand won by one run only the fourth team in history to win a Test after following on in the second Test after England won the first by 267 runs. The three matches at the end of this year form part of the World Test Championship, which New Zealand won in its inaugural edition before losing the title to Australia. India, which has won six of nine Tests in this edition, leads the WTC standings with Australia in second place and New Zealand in third. England is ninth ahead of home series against West
Eight of their senior players are missing from the line-up due to IPL duties but young New Zealand batter Finn Allen is confident that the new-look side would still be a handful for hosts Pakistan when the two sides clash in a five-match T20 International series starting April 18. Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner and Kane Williamson are all missing from the line-up for the away engagement due to the ongoing league. "It is an awesome opportunity with players being away at the IPL, for young guys such as Tim Robinson, who have shown their talent and had a good Super Smash tournament here in New Zealand during the summer," Allen told PTI Videos in an interaction facilitated by Sony Network which has acquired broadcast rights of New Zealand cricket's home engagements. "...it is rewarding for those guys and allows them to get an opportunity at the top level to see where they stand against a formidable Pakistan ...
Recently retired elite panel umpire Marais Erasmus has admitted to making a 'massive' mistake in the 2019 ODI World Cup final that England won in a rather controversial fashion at the iconic Lord's. England won their maiden ODI World Cup title by edging New Zealand on the now-scrapped boundary countback rule after both teams were tied following a Super Over. However, the game could have ended in regulation time if on-field umpire Erasmus and Kumar Dharamsena did not award England six runs for an overthrow in the 50th over with the hosts needing nine runs from three balls. It was later realised that England should have been awarded only five runs as the batters had not crossed for the second run. The next morning (after the final) I opened my hotel room door on my way to breakfast and Kumar opened his door at the same time and he said, did you see we made a massive error?' That's when I got to know about it," Erasmus told 'The Telegraph'. "But in the moment on the field, we just sai
Pakistan will host New Zealand in a five-match Twenty20 International series next month as part of its preparations for the T20 World Cup. The Pakistan Cricket Board on Wednesday said Rawalpindi will host three games on April 18, 20 and 21 and the remaining two will be played at Lahore on April 25 and 27. New Zealand will likely be missing several frontline players including Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner and Lockie Ferguson, who will be playing in the Indian Premier League. New Zealand beat Pakistan 4-1 at home in Shaheen Shah Afridi's debut T20I series as skipper earlier this year. This tour symbolizes the deep-rooted ties and mutual respect that define the relationship between our two cricketing nations, Usman Wahla, the PCB's director of international cricket, said. Our avid cricket fans and the people of Pakistan will welcome the New Zealand team again. We hope to have yet another competitive series which is a key part of our buildup to this year's ICC T20 World Cup. The J
The biggest find of New Zealand's World Cup campaign in India, Rachin Ravindra on Wednesday became the youngest recipient of the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal after becoming the country's best male cricketer of the year. Among women, Melie Kerr grabbed the major prizes at the New Zealand Cricket Awards. Kane Williamson was recognised for his outstanding form in the Test arena with the ANZ Test Player of the Year Award, and winning the Redpath Cup for men's first-class batting. At 24, Ravindra is the youngest winner in the award's history, after a season that's seen him become a mainstay of New Zealand's red and white ball sides. After breaking into the side in March last year, Ravindra shone in the ODI World Cup in India, scoring 578 runs at an average of 64, including three centuries and two half-centuries, including an unbeaten 123 in the tournament opener against England in Ahmedabad. As a result, Ravindra was named as the ICC's Emerging Player of the Year for 2023, and also secured
India, who established their position at the top after an inning and 64 runs win against India at Dharamsala on March 9, is now only six percentage points (PoP) ahead of the Australian side
Wicketkeeper Alex Carey made an unbeaten 98 and shared a 140-run partnership with Mitch Marsh which guided Australia through various hazards to a three-wicket win over New Zealand in the second Test at Christchurch, New Zealand and a 2-0 sweep of the series. Throughout the day as the contest played out on a relatively mild fourth-day pitch, both sides had moments when they took control. But it was Marsh's innings of 80 and Carey's steady hand which guided Australia to victory. Its total of 281-7 completed the 14th-highest successful fourth innings run chase in test history. On the other side, New Zealand narrowly missed out on its first test win over Australia in New Zealand in 31 years. Its last win in Australia came in Hobart 13 years ago. When Marsh was out, Australia needed 59 runs with four wickets in hand and when Mitchell Starc was out next ball, it needed 59 with three wickets and the match turned briefly in New Zealand's favor. But Carey kept Australia on track and added
Australia needed 202 runs and New Zealand six wickets to win the second cricket test in what should be a thrilling finish after both teams had highs and lows on the third day Sunday. Rachin Ravindra made 82, Tom Latham 73 and Daryl Mitchell 58 before New Zealand was out for 372 in its second innings after trailing by 94 on the first. That left Australia needing 279 to win the match and complete a 2-0 sweep of the series. The target, if achieved, will be the 14th-highest successful fourth-innings run chase in test history. At stumps, Australia was 77-4 with Mitch Marsh 27 not out and Travis Head 17. Head and Marsh batted through the last 10 overs of the day to save Australia from further loss. Matt Henry and Ben Sears took two wickets each in the final session as New Zealand reduced Australia to 34-4 before it staged its late recovery. New Zealand heads into the final day in a strong position to continue its streak of unbeaten test series at home. After the current pair, Australia
