Urban unemployment rate hits fresh low of 6.4% in Q2 FY25: PLFS data

The unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above in urban areas dipped to 6.4 per cent in the July-September quarter, according to the National Sample Survey Survey (NSSO). Joblessness, or unemployment rate, is defined as the percentage of unemployed people in the labour force. The unemployment rate in the September quarter of FY24 was 6.6 per cent. The unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above in the previous April-June quarter of FY25 was 6.6 per cent in urban areas, the 24th Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) showed. The unemployment rate among females (aged 15 years and above) in urban areas declined to 8.4 per cent in July-September 2024 from 8.6 per cent in the same quarter a year ago. The rate was 9 per cent in April-June, 2024. Among males, the unemployment rate in urban areas declined to 5.7 per cent in July-September 2024 from 6 per cent in the same quarter a year ago. Poverty declines to 8.5% in 2022-24 from 21.2% in 2011-12: NCAER paper

Poverty in India is estimated to have declined to 8.5 per cent in 2022-24 from 21.2 per cent in 2011-12, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, according to a research paper by the economic think tank NCAER. The paper titled 'Rethinking Social Safety Nets in a Changing Society', authored by Sonalde Desai of NCAER, used data from the newly completed Wave 3 of the India Human Development Survey (IHDS) as well as data from Waves 1 and 2 of the IHDS. "According to the IHDS findings...poverty declined significantly between 2004-2005 and 2011-12 (from a headcount ratio of 38.6 to 21.2), and it continued to decline between 2011-12 and 2022-24 (from 21.2 to 8.5) despite the challenges posed by the pandemic," the paper said. Statistics Min ties up with Isro to conduct digital Urban Frame Survey

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has inked an initial pact with National Remote Sensing Centre under ISRO to digitalise Urban Frame Survey using the Bhuvan Platform. This collaboration is aimed at transforming Urban Frame Survey (UFS) from analogue to digital mode and help MoSPI to achieve the targets of updating urban frame regularly in a timely manner, an official statement said. NSSO (FOD) under MoSPI has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NRSC under the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to facilitate UFS in a digital mode using the Geo ICT tools and techniques of Bhuvan Platform. The agreement covers development/ improvement of mobile application for geo-tagging of NSSO UFS data, web portal for visualisation, system generated scrutiny, editing, etc. of data submitted through mobile application, and others. Latest NSSO consumer survey indicates poverty down to 5%: NITI Aayog CEO

The latest consumer expenditure survey indicates that poverty has come down to five per cent in the country and people are becoming prosperous both in rural and urban areas, NITI Aayog CEO B V R Subrahmanyam said on Sunday.
