Ramdas Athawale asks Nitish Kumar to give Mumbai oppn meet a slip

Union minister Ramadas Athawale on Saturday lamented the exit of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) from the NDA despite his good relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The RPI leader also expressed the view that the JD(U) leader, who has since been at the forefront of forging opposition unity, should skip the next meeting of non-BJP bloc INDIA at Mumbai scheduled next month. Koi faayda nahin hai (it will be of no use), said Athawale, asserting that it was his advice to Kumar to refrain from attending the meet. He seems to be not happy in that camp. He was unhappy with the acronym INDIA but Rahul Gandhi prevailed, said Athawale, referring to speculations in a section of the media that emerged after the new name was announced at the meeting in Bengaluru earlier this month. Kumar himself has dismissed such speculations and asserted that the new name of the opposition coalition was decided unanimously. Athawale, who also fondly recalled his own good relations with Kumar

Opposition playing politics over Manipur issue: Law Minister Meghwal

Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Saturday slammed the opposition for "playing politics" over the Manipur violence issue, saying these parties do not want a debate on this matter in Parliament. The Union Minister of State for Law and Justice further said that had the opposition allowed discussion in Parliament, the country would have come to know what kind of actions have been taken by the government in the matter. "But the opposition does not want the debate in Parliament," he alleged while addressing the media here on the sidelines of an international conference on 'Environmental Laws and Constitutional Rights: A global perspective'. "We took all types of actions. The Union Home Minister stayed there for three days. It is not that such incidents did not take place in Manipur earlier. The home minis

'Ulterior political motives': Oppn slams govt over extension to ED's Mishra

The opposition slammed the BJP-led Centre on Friday over the extension of the tenure of Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief Sanjay Kumar Mishra till September 15, alleging that this was done with "ulterior political motives" and was aimed at targeting the leaders of the INDIA bloc with "false cases" to weaken the alliance. The Supreme Court on Thursday extended Mishra's tenure till the midnight of September 15 in larger "public and national interest", after the Centre asserted that his continuity is necessary in view of the ongoing FATF peer review and attempts by India's neighbours to ensure that the country gets into the "grey" list. The top court, which initially made a sharp observation and asked "are we not giving a picture that there is no other person and the entire department is full of incompetent people", subsequently relented and accepted the Centre's request for extending Mishra's tenure, but for a month less than what was sought. Addressing a joint press conference outsi

PM Modi not speaking in parl but making speeches in Rajasthan: Kharge

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accused him of not speaking in Parliament and instead making political speeches in Rajasthan. Kharge said people have now become aware and will fight "this kind of politics". "Today, people have become aware and they will fight and continue to do so...This means you do not want to talk in Parliament - the temple of democracy, and want to give a political speech in Rajasthan while opening new medical colleges," he told reporters outside Parliament, while attacking the prime minister for not speaking in Parliament on the Manipur violence. The opposition has been accusing the prime minister of not making a statement in Parliament on the northeastern state, which has seen violence since May 3. What kind of 'INDIA' are you: EAM slams opposition for disrupting statement

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar assailed the Opposition on Thursday for disrupting his statement in Rajya Sabha, saying they claim to be 'INDIA', the name of their alliance, but if they are not prepared to listen about India's national interests then what kind of India are they. Jaishankar spoke suo moto in the House to brief members about the successes of India's foreign policy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visits abroad amid continuous disruption by opposition members in the House. He said it was extremely unfortunate that the opposition had prioritised "partisan politics", describing it as a very state of affairs. It is not just a government's achievement but an achievement for the country, he said. Noting that India's president and prime minister have received the highest honours from other countries, he said, "If you cannot respect the president, cannot respect the vice president, cannot respect the prime minister, if you won't allow the foreign minister to

No-confidence motion: PM Modi's 'prediction' from 2019 goes viral

With the opposition moving a no-confidence motion against his government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks in Lok Sabha in 2019 have gone viral in which he mockingly tells opposition parties to prepare hard to bring such a motion in 2023. "I want to send you my good wishes that you prepare so much that you get a chance to bring a no-confidence again in 2023," he had said during his reply to the Motion of Thanks on the President's address -- his last major speech in the House ahead of the 2019 general elections. The BJP went on to notch up a bigger win in the 2019 polls, bagging 303 seats compared to 282 in the 2014 general elections. Government sources shared this part of Modi's speech to highlight his "prediction". Responding to an opposition member, Modi said it was the consequence of arrogance that the Congress' tally fell from over 400 at one time to nearly 40 in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. It was due to the spirit of service that the BJP rose from two seats to winning pow
