RS proceedings adjourned briefly amid ruckus by treasury, Oppn benches

Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for about 30 minutes till 12 noon amid a ruckus between ruling and opposition benches as both sides insisted on taking up their respective issues. BJP MPs wanted to raise the law and order situation in Congress-ruled Rajasthan, while the opposition wanted a discussion on the Manipur situation by suspending the scheduled business of the day under Rule 267 of the House. Soon after the listed papers were tabled, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said he has received 48 notices to suspend the scheduled business and take up matters mentioned therein. In the meantime, there was an uproar among BJP members. Leader of the House Piyush Goyal said atrocities were being committed against girls and women in Rajasthan and there was a "total breakdown" of the law and order in the state. He demanded a short discussion on the issue. When the Chair asked for guidance from Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, there was again an uproar by the treasury benches. The

Oppn bloc INDIA to skip meeting called by Dhankhar to end RS logjam

The opposition alliance INDIA will not attend the meeting called by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday afternoon to end the logjam in the House over the Manipur issue, sources said. The opposition believes that a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a comprehensive discussion on Manipur, which has been roiled by months-long ethnic violence, are non-negotiable, they said. Dhankhar has invited floor leaders of all parties for the meeting in an effort to end the impasse in Rajya Sabha. Proceedings in the Upper House have been disrupted as opposition parties are demanding a discussion on the situation in Manipur under Rule 267, which allows for suspension of the listed business for the day to discuss an issue. The government, however, has agreed to hold a short-duration discussion under Rule 176 of Rajya Sabha. Opposition parties will not attend the meeting called by Dhankhar, the sources said. Govt failed to control Manipur strife, PM shows brazen indifference: Oppn

Stating that the government machinery has completely failed to control the Manipur ethnic conflict, which is lingering for nearly three months, opposition bloc INDIA on Sunday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his "silence", showing "brazen indifference" to the ongoing situation in the northeastern state. In a memorandum submitted to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, the 21 opposition MPs who signed the document demanded urgent rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected people to bring peace and harmony to the state. "From the reports of incessant firing and arson of houses in the last few days, it is established beyond doubt that the state machinery has completely failed to control the situation for the last almost three months," the memorandum read. The continued internet ban for the last three months is aiding the unsubstantiated rumours, which is adding to the existing mistrust among the communities, the Parliamentarians said. Ramdas Athawale asks Nitish Kumar to give Mumbai oppn meet a slip

Union minister Ramadas Athawale on Saturday lamented the exit of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) from the NDA despite his good relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The RPI leader also expressed the view that the JD(U) leader, who has since been at the forefront of forging opposition unity, should skip the next meeting of non-BJP bloc INDIA at Mumbai scheduled next month. Koi faayda nahin hai (it will be of no use), said Athawale, asserting that it was his advice to Kumar to refrain from attending the meet. He seems to be not happy in that camp. He was unhappy with the acronym INDIA but Rahul Gandhi prevailed, said Athawale, referring to speculations in a section of the media that emerged after the new name was announced at the meeting in Bengaluru earlier this month. Kumar himself has dismissed such speculations and asserted that the new name of the opposition coalition was decided unanimously. Athawale, who also fondly recalled his own good relations with Kumar

Opposition playing politics over Manipur issue: Law Minister Meghwal

Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Saturday slammed the opposition for "playing politics" over the Manipur violence issue, saying these parties do not want a debate on this matter in Parliament. He also said what action has been taken pertaining to the Manipur issue will be known when discussion takes place in Parliament on the no-confidence motion brought by the opposition. The Union Minister of State for Law and Justice further said that had the opposition allowed discussion in Parliament, the country would have come to know what kind of actions have been taken by the government in the matter. "But the opposition does not want the debate in Parliament," he alleged while addressing the media here on the sidelines of an international conference on 'Environmental Laws and Constitutional Rights: A global perspective'. "We took all types of actions. The Union Home Minister stayed there for three days. It is not that such incidents did not take place in Manipur earlier. The home minis

'Ulterior political motives': Oppn slams govt over extension to ED's Mishra

The opposition slammed the BJP-led Centre on Friday over the extension of the tenure of Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief Sanjay Kumar Mishra till September 15, alleging that this was done with "ulterior political motives" and was aimed at targeting the leaders of the INDIA bloc with "false cases" to weaken the alliance. The Supreme Court on Thursday extended Mishra's tenure till the midnight of September 15 in larger "public and national interest", after the Centre asserted that his continuity is necessary in view of the ongoing FATF peer review and attempts by India's neighbours to ensure that the country gets into the "grey" list. The top court, which initially made a sharp observation and asked "are we not giving a picture that there is no other person and the entire department is full of incompetent people", subsequently relented and accepted the Centre's request for extending Mishra's tenure, but for a month less than what was sought. Addressing a joint press conference outsi

Cong accuses Goyal of instructing BJP MPs to obstruct Kharge's speech in RS

The Congress on Thursday alleged that Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal instructed BJP MPs to obstruct Mallikarjun Kharge from speaking in the House and accused the saffron party of crossing all limits of decency and decorum in Parliament. Kharge could not speak in the upper house due to sloganeering after the External Affairs minister's statement on India's foreign policy developments. Both treasury benches and the opposition were raising slogans due to which Kharge could not make his point. Following the uproar, Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar adjourned the House till 2 pm. Taking to Twitter, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, "BJP continues to cross all limits of decency and decorum in Parliament." "Today morning no less than the Leader of the House Piyush Goyal actively instigated BJP MPs who then obstructed Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge ji from speaking in the Rajya Sabha to raise INDIA's demands for PM's statement on Manipur and for a ...
