LS elections: Delhi Police finds 2,000 polling booths in city as 'critical'

Of the 13,500 polling booths in Delhi, police have so far identified around 2,000 as "critical" based on past cases as well as the probability of deterioration of the law-and-order situation and extra security personnel would be deployed there, officials said on Wednesday. As many as 1.47 crore people are eligible to exercise their franchise at the seven Lok Sabha constituencies of the city where polling will be held on May 25. Ahead of every election, police prepare a list of polling booths marked as "critical" based on multiple parameters. The Election Commission then takes a final call on the list. In total, the city has around 13,500 polling booths which will be probably located at around 2,700 locations across Delhi. "We have identified critical polling booths and polling stations in various districts of Delhi. Heavily armed police cordoned off part of a Dutch town on Saturday, saying that multiple people were being held hostage in a building there. Police spokesman Simon Klok told The Associated Press people were being held hostage in Ede but he declined to give more details of the incident or say how many people were involved. Earlier, police evacuated 150 homes near a central square in the town of Ede, saying that there was a person in the area "who could be a danger to themself or others. Images from the scene in Ede, a rural market town 85 kilometers (53 miles) southeast of Amsterdam, showed police and firefighters on the streets in a cordoned-off area. The municipality said that all shops in the center of Ede would remain closed.

No consumption of liquor at public places on Holi, say Noida Police

No religious prayers or processions would be allowed at public places or disputed sites across Noida and Greater Noida on Monday (Holi), the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police said on Sunday as it imposed CrPC section 144 across the district. Police also ordered that no person shall consume "liquor or intoxicating substances" at any public place and warned action under IPC section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) for violation of the order. At least two people were killed and 22 others injured when a suicide bomber rammed a vehicle laden with explosives against a convoy of the security forces in Pakistan's restive northwest region on Thursday, police said. The incident happened in the Dera Ismail Khan district of the country's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when the security convoy was on the move from one part of the district to another. "In the suicide blast, at least 2 people were killed and 22 others injured. The two deceased are believed to be from the Army. However, it is not confirmed yet," said a senior police officer. Noida Police on Wednesday arrested two associates of YouTuber Elvish Yadav over its probe into suspected use of snake venoms as recreational drugs in parties, officials said. 11 injured after wave breaks floating bridge handrail in Kerala, say police

Several persons were injured in an accident at Varkala beach here on Saturday when a huge wave hit a floating bridge that people were standing on, toppling many of them into the water, police said. An officer of the Varkala police station said 11 persons, including two children, were injured in the accident in which a handrail of the floating bridge was also broken due to the impact of the waves. Two of the injured persons were referred to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College as their injuries were serious, police said. As the people standing on the floating bridge were wearing life jackets, they could be brought back to shore quickly and safely without any loss of life, it said. Delhi Police cop suspended for 'kicking' namazis in Inderlok; area tense

The Delhi Police on Friday suspended a sub-inspector for allegedly kicking a few people offering namaz on a road in north Delhi's Inderlok area on Friday, police said. The incident happened during the 'Asar ki namaz' around 2 pm near Inderlok Metro Station. Locals in response blocked the road and demanded action against the policeman, which led to stepping up of security in the area to maintain law and order situation. Bangladesh police have arrested three persons, including two owners of a restaurant, in connection with the massive fire that broke out at a shopping mall in the capital Dhaka that killed at least 46 people. The fire broke out around 9:50 pm on Thursday at the restaurant named Kacchi Bhai on the first floor of the building, Green Cozy Cottage, and quickly spread to the upper floors that had more restaurants and a garment shop, according to fire service officials. Car securing route for CM Yogi's cavalcade meets with accident, 15 injured

At least 13 people including police personnel were injured when a police jeep met with an accident here Saturday evening while securing the route for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's cavalcade, officials said. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday hailed the Pune Police for busting the "country's biggest" drug racket and said action needs to be taken if foreign links come to light. Police seized 1,700 kilograms of mephedrone worth Rs 3000-3500 crore from Pune, Delhi, Sangli and other cities and arrested eight persons so far. Fadnavis, who heads the state Home Department, declared a Rs 25 lakh reward for investigating officers who blew the lid off the racket. "Police will dig out all links of the drugs trade ring. We need to investigate this racket even in other states," he said. At an event held at the Pune Police Commissioner's Office, Fadnavis felicitated the officers. "I would like to congratulate Pune Police for busting the drugs racket. I think this is the country's biggest action.
