SC declines urgent hearing on plea against mandatory waqf listing on UMEED

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to urgently list for hearing an interim plea challenging mandatory registration of all waqfs, including waqf-by-users under the UMEED portal. The Centre had on June 6 launched the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995 (UMEED) Central Portal to create a digital inventory after geo-tagging all Waqf properties. As per the mandate of the UMEED portal, details of all registered Waqf properties across India are to be mandatorily uploaded within six months. On May 22, a bench headed by Chief Justice B Gavai had reserved interim orders on three key issues in the waqf case. One of the issues relate to the power to denotify properties declared as waqf by courts, waqf-by-user or waqf by deed prescribed in Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. On Friday, a lawyer told the bench that the Centre has the portal which calls for mandatory registration of all waqfs, including waqfs by users. The lawyer said that requirements are such

Sebi to auction properties of HBN Dairies in Feb at Rs 83 cr reserve price

Capital markets regulator Sebi will auction 26 properties of HBN Diaries & Allied Ltd for a reserve price of Rs 83 crore in February. The move is part of the markets watchdog's effort to recover money raised by HBN Dairies & Allied through illicit collective investment schemes. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) initiated the process for the sale of the assets after HBN and its directors -- Harmender Singh Sran, Amandeep Singh Sran, Manjeet Kaur Sran and Jasbeer Kaur -- failed to refund investors' money. The properties to go under the hammer include plots, land parcels, and commercial shops, Sebi said in a notice on January 22. Demolition of properties: SC says it will lay down guidelines for citizens

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it will lay down guidelines for all citizens and not for any particular community on the issue of demolition of properties. Observing that its directions will be applicable pan-India, the apex court said it will make it clear that merely because a person is an accused or even a convict, it can't be a ground for demolition of property. "Whatever we are laying down, we are a secular country. We are laying it down for all the citizens, for all the institutions not for any particular community," a bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan said. Observing that there can't be a different law for a particular religion, the bench said it will not protect any unauthorised constructions on public roads, government lands or forests. "We will take care to ensure that our order does not help the encroachers on any of the public places," the bench said. The hearing in the matter is underway.
