Kolkata rape case: Ex-BJP MP, docs summoned for revealing victim's identity

Kolkata Police have issued summonses to former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and two renowned doctors for allegedly spreading rumours and disclosing the identity of the woman doctor who was raped and murdered at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, an officer said. Apart from these three persons, the police have also issued summonses to 57 others for spreading wrong information about the incident, he said. Dr Kunal Sarkar and Dr Subarna Goswami were issued summonses to appear before officers of the Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar at 3 pm on Sunday, he added. These people have been accused of revealing the identity of the victim, spreading rumours and fake news, the officer said. Former R G Kar Hospital principal appears before CBI for second day

The former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital Dr Sandip Ghosh on Saturday appeared before the CBI for questioning for the second consecutive day in connection with the rape and murder of a doctor. On Friday, the agency escorted the former hospital principal for questioning which continued till 3 am on Saturday. Ghosh was made to sit in a room at the CBI's city office here at the CGO Complex till 9.30 pm after which the grilling session started, an officer said. Hours later, Ghosh reached the CBI office for the second time a little before 10.30 am for his second round of examination. During his first round of questioning, the former principal was asked about his first reaction after getting the news of the doctor's death whom he instructed to inform the family and how and who contacted the police, the officer said. Docs in K'taka hold protest seeking justice for Kolkata rape-murder victim

Members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Karnataka on Saturday joined the nationwide protest condemning the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata. Seeking justice for the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and killed in a Kolkata hospital, a protest march is being taken out by the doctors in several parts of the southern state. In Bengaluru, the agitation is taking place at the IMA office in Chamarajpet where over 1,000 doctors are participating. 275 cases of rape in custody registered during 2017-22: NCRB data

More than 270 cases of rape in custody were registered from 2017 till 2022, according to NCRB data, with women rights activists attributing such instances to lack of sensitisation and accountability within law enforcement systems. The offenders include police personnel, public servants, members of the armed forces and staff of jails, remand homes, places of custody and hospitals, according to the data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The data highlights that there has been a gradual decrease in such cases over the years. In 2022, 24 cases were registered, down from 26 in 2021, 29 in 2020, 47 in 2019, 60 in 2018 and 89 in 2017. Cases of custodial rape are registered under Indian Penal Code section 376 (2). It pertains to the offense of rape committed by a police officer, jailer, or any other person who has the lawful custody of a woman.
