Special prayers were conducted today at the famous Shrine Basilica at Velankanni in the district for normalcy to return in rain-ravaged Kerala. Rector Prabhakar Adigalar led the prayers in Malayalam. The priest prayed for the safety of the people and fast return of normalcy in the neighbouring state which has been experiencing the deadliest deluge in close to a century. The rain fury since August 8 have claimed 194 lives. The police on Saturday arrested two people for burning sacred books at India Gate on August 15. They burnt copies of the Bible, the Geeta, the Quran, the Guru Granth Sahib and the Constitution.The accused, during the investigation, cited their disbelief in the Constitution as the reason behind the move.Both the accused have been sent to judicial custody.More details are awaited.
Saudi Arabia is preparing to host the annual hajj pilgrimage beginning Sunday, as over 1.6 million Muslim faithful from abroad have arrived in the ultraconservative kingdom. The pilgrimage represents one of the five pillars of Islam and is required of all able-bodied Muslims once in their life. In recent weeks, the faithful have arrived in Mecca from across the world, all chanting "Labayk Allahuma Labayk," or "Here I am, God, answering your call. Here I am." A man has been arrested for allegedly growing ganja on a plot of land that belongs to the Navy in Goa's Vasco town, around 30 kilometres from here, police said today. Vasco police inspector Nolasco Raposo said that a local resident, identified as Sameer Sheikh, had planted ganja on land on which the Navy was constructing a residential building for its personnel. He added that the plot in question is close to a primary school run by Naval authorities for children of its personnel. "Based on a tip-off, police raided the area and arrested Sheikh. The land belongs to the Navy. Investigations are underway to uncover more details about how Sheikh managed to plant ganja on the plot of land," Raposo said.

A six-day Vedic ritual, held once in 12 years, concluded today at the famous hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara at nearby Tirumala. Around 40 high priests took part in the "Astabandhana Balalaya Maha Samprokshanam, during which they plugged minor cracks and holes inside the sanctum sanctorum of the 2000-year old shrine using a herbal paste harder than concrete mix, amid chanting of hymns, a temple official said. The ritual began on the night of August 11 and as part of it priests also performed 'homams' in 28 'homa gundams' (fire altars), each one dedicated to a deity, built inside the temple complex for the purpose. During the six days of the ritual, the number of devotees allowed into the temple was drastically reduced and only 1.6 lakh had darshan of the presiding deity during the period when priests took breaks. Daily hundi collections at the Lord Venkateswara temple at nearby Tirumala has hit a record low of Rs 54 lakh against the usual Rs three crore due to curbs on devotees' entry for a six day ritual, a temple official said. "The hundi (offering box) daily gets cash offerings of Rs three crore or more, besides gold and other offerings. The income saw an unprecedented dip due to restrictions on entry of devotees on account of the ritual,"the official of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, which administers the shrine, told PTI. Earlier on August 12, the second day of the ritual, the hundi had netted a low of Rs 73 lakh, he said.
