Activist Rehana Fathima, who had attempted to enter the Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala when it opened for monthly puja last month, was arrested Tuesday for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through her Facebook posts, police said. Fathima (32) was arrested from office in Palarivattom in Kochi, they said. The activist, a BSNL employee, was booked by police in Pathanamthitta on a complaint by Radhakrishna Menon, alleging that some of her Facebook posts hurt religious sentiments. She was booked under IPC Section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs). Using the word 'Gorakh Dhanda' to describe unethical practices will be a punishable offence if the BJP is voted to power again in Rajasthan, the party said in its poll manifesto Tuesday. Releasing the manifesto for the December 7 assembly polls, the party said the word hurts the sentiments of the followers of saint Gorakhnath and therefore its use should be stopped. Kerala Assembly Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan on Tuesday turned down a private bill on the Sabarimala Temple issue, submitted by Congress MLA M Vincent.It was declined on the recommendation of the law department underlining that as per the Supreme Court verdict over the issue on October 28, a law in this regard would be "unconstitutional".The bill urged for a new law that would consider Ayyappa devotees as a specific religious group. It also suggested a new law to protect the rituals and customs of the Temple.Last month, a string of protests was witnessed in Kerala when the temple opened for the first time after the top court had passed the order, allowing women of all age group to enter into the shrine. Earlier, entry of women of menstruating age, between 10 and 50 years, was prohibited into the shrine.Over 3,505 protesters were arrested and at least 529 cases were filed in connection with the series of incidents inciting violence in the state.
Malaysia is deporting four Finnish tourists and barring them from returning after they were detained for distributing Christian materials on a resort island in the Muslim-majority country. The two women and two men, aged between 27 and 60, were arrested Nov. 20 at their hotel in northern Langkawi island. Langkawi police chief Mohamad Iqbal Ibrahim says the four have been handed over to the immigration department following a decision by public prosecutors to deport them. Firecracker traders staged a protest here Monday urging the state and central governments to file review pleas on the Supreme Court order imposing curbs on bursting of firecrackers within a specified time limit. Over 1,000 traders from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra took part in the protest. On October 23, the top court had allotted a two-hour duration for bursting crackers on Diwali and other festivals. However, on October 30, it modified its order which had fixed 8 PM to 10 PM as slot for bursting firecrackers on Diwali and other festivals, saying that authorities in states are at liberty to change the timings but the duration will not exceed two hours a day. The court was hearing a plea by the Tamil Nadu government which sought its nod for bursting of crackers on Diwali morning in accordance with the religious practices in the state. The daughter of India's "milkman" Dr Verghese Kurien Monday rubbished former Gujarat minister Dileep Sanghani's claim that he diverted dairy cooperative Amuls profit to fund religious conversions in the country. Sanghani had alleged that the late founder-chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation funded religious conversions by Christian missionaries from Amul's profits.
