The traditional 'at home' function at the Raj Niwas ahead of Republic Day presented a scene of bonhomie on Tuesday as Lt Governor VK Saxena and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal warmly greeted each other, amid their ongoing power tussle. Delhi Police intensifies security arrangements ahead of Republic Day

The Delhi Police have stepped up anti-sabotage checks, verification drives and patrolling in the national capital ahead of Republic Day to thwart any untoward incidents, officials said on Tuesday. Anti-sabotage checks are being conducted in markets, high footfall areas and other prominent places by the Bomb Disposal Team along with dog squads, police said. The police are checking hotels and lodges as well as sensitising the staff there to inform police immediately about any suspicious person or activity, they said. All Assistant Commissioner of Police and Station House Officers have been holding meetings with members of the Residents Welfare Association and Market Welfare Associations and briefing them about security measures in place for Republic Day, police said. Haryana Police have beefed up security measures across the state in the run-up to Republic day. All commissioners and district superintendents of police have been directed to ensure elaborate security cover at all important venues for celebrations and flag-hoisting on Thursday, Director General of Police (DGP) PK Agrawal said. All roads leading to celebration venues are being monitored with 'nakas' and surprise checks. Additional forces have been deployed to deal with any untoward incident, he said on Tuesday. Commuters had a harrowing time Monday morning as they found themselves stuck in long jams on Central Delhi roads owing restrictions made ahead of Republic Day Parade rehearsal. Police said they received several calls from commuters reporting traffic woes. Vikas Marg (from Laxmi Nagar to ITO), Pragat Maidan, and Akshardham were three of several such stretches which witnessed intractable snarls. Ankita Singh, a commuter, said, "Traffic from Noida till Akshardham was heavy. The route leading towards ITO also had jam and the GPS showed 40 minutes to cover a distance of around 6 kilometres." R-Day parade: Police issue traffic advisory for Monday's dress rehearsal

Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory on the arrangements and restrictions for smooth conduct of Monday's full dress rehearsal for the Republic Day parade. The rehearsal will start at 10.30 am from Vijay Chowk and pass via Kartavya Path, C-Hexagon, roundabout statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Tilak Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and Netaji Subhash Marg before concluding at Red Fort. In order to facilitate its smooth passage, no traffic movement will be allowed on Kartavya Path from Vijay Chowk to India Gate from 6 pm on Sunday till the end of the parade on Monday. There will also be no cross-traffic on Kartavya Path at Rafi Marg, Janpath and Man Singh Road from 11 pm on Sunday till the parade ends. C-Hexagon-India Gate will be closed from 9.15 am on Monday till the parade crosses Tilak Marg, the advisory stated. Special remission programme: 189 jail convicts to be released on R-Day

A total of 189 convicts will be released from prisons across Maharashtra, including three from Thane Central Jail, on Republic Day as part of the Union government's special remission programme to mark 75 years of Independence, an official said on Sunday. The three inmates from Thane are undergoing jail terms for attempt to murder and other crimes, he added. "The special remission programme will see some prisoners being released on January 26, 2023 and August 15,2023 for good conduct while serving their sentences. A total of 189 inmates from Maharashtra will be released," he said. The prisoners are selected on the basis of age, time spent in jail, disabilities, health etc, he added. Thane Central Jail has 4,569 inmates, including 132 women, while 52 are above the age of 70 and 386 below 20 years. The capacity of the jail is, however, just 1,105, officials here pointed out.
