Cyrus Mistry death: Mumbai gynecologist was driving Mercedes, says police

A well-known gynecologist in Mumbai was driving the car which crashed on a road divider on Sunday, killing former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry and another occupant of the vehicle, police said. Primary information suggests that the car was over speeding and tried to overtake another vehicle from the wrong side (from the left), a police official told PTI. The gynecologist, Anahita Pandole (55), and her husband Darius Pandole (60) survived the crash, while Mistry (54) and Jahangir Pandole, brother of Darius, were killed in the accident, which happened around 3 pm, about 120 km from Mumbai, the official said. Mistry and Jahangir were in the back seats, the official said. Darius was in the the front seat with Anahita, who was at the wheel, he said. A woman was driving the car and tried to overtake another vehicle from left side, but lost control and crashed into the road divider, an eyewitness said. Focus back on road crash deaths after Cyrus Mistry's fatal accident

The fatal road accident involving former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry on Sunday once again brought into focus the high number of deaths caused in such incidents every year in the country, with government data showing a record 1.55 lakh lives were lost in 2021. Mistry, 54, was killed this afternoon after his car hit a divider in Maharashtra's Palghar district when he was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes car. The accident took place around 3.15 pm on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems an accident, said Palghar Superintendent of Police Balasaheb Patil. According to National Crime Records Bureau data released recently, over 1.55 lakh people were killed in road crashes across India in 2021 -- an average of 426 daily or 18 every single hour. This is the highest death figures recorded in such accidents in any calendar year so far. 4 children killed, 11 injured as jeep collides with truck in MP's Ujjain

Four school children were killed and 11 others injured after the jeep in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district on Monday, a police official said. The accident took place near Jhirniya Fata in Unhel town when the children were on way to the Fatima Convent School, Nagda, Ujjain's Superintendent of Police Satyendra Shukla said. Amit Shah visits AIIMS to check on injured ITBP men in J&K road accident

Union Home minister Amit Shah on Saturday visited the AIIMS trauma centre in Delhi and took stock of the medical care being provided to three ITBP personnel injured in a road accident while coming back after completing Amarnath Yatra duty in Jammu and Kashmir. Nearly 48,000 people died in accidents on national highways in 2020

A total of 47,984 people died due to road accidents on National Highways, including on expressways, during calendar year 2020, Parliament was informed on Thursday. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said as many as 53,872 persons died due to road accidents on National Highways, including on expressways, in 2019. Gadkari said the major causes of accidents on the National Highways (NHs) are vehicle design and condition, road engineering, over-speeding, drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug, driving on wrong side, jumping the red light, use of mobile phone, etc. He also said the ministry has issued guidelines for improving the road safety through road safety audits at all stages (design stage, construction stage and O&M stage) by engaging independent road safety experts. Replying to a separate question, Gadkari said during the oxygen crisis in March-April 2021, shortage of technically qualified trained drivers .
