As many as 10,46,163 motor accident claims worth Rs 80,455 crore are pending across the country and their numbers have increased constantly between 2018-19 and 2022-23, according to an information received through RTI Act. The details have been provided by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in response to the query filed by Supreme Court advocate K C Jain in April. In his query to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Jain had sought to know the total number of motor accident claims pending in the country with state- and district-wise details. A 32-year-old man died after his bike collided with a juvenile's bike in south Mumbai on Thursday, police said. The incident came days after the May 19 Pune accident involving a Porsche car driven by a 17-year-old boy in which two people were killed. The man injured in Thursday's accident in Mazgaon area, Irfan Nawab Ali Shaikh, was rushed to J J Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. Police detained the juvenile and transferred him to Dongri Children's Home in Mumbai, an official said. His father has been arrested, the official added.

At least 15 people were killed and more than a dozen injured -- all employees of a private firm -- as the bus they were travelling in fell into a 'murum' soil mine pit in Chhattisgarh's Durg district on Tuesday night, police said. The accident took place around 8:30 pm near Khapri village under Kumhari police station limits when the victims, employees of a distillery company, were returning home after work, Durg Superintendent of Police Jitendra Shukla said. As per preliminary information, the bus with more than 30 people onboard skidded off the road and plunged into the 40 feet deep 'murum' mine, he said. The road transport and highways ministry on Friday said it has suggested that truck drivers could be allowed to use a technology system wherein they can inform authorities about an accident so that such an incident will not be considered as a hit-and-run case under the new law. "The matter comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs and it will take the final decision," road transport and highways secretary Anurag Jain said. His comments come days after some truckers went on a strike to protest against stringent provisions for hit-and-run cases under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which is yet to come into force. Earlier this week, the protesting truckers resumed work after talks with the government. According to Jain, truck drivers feel that if they stop after hitting a person to help the victim, they will be harmed by the public. Two women were killed and 55 others injured when a private bus carrying employees of a Pune-based firm overturned in a ghat in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Saturday, police said. The accident occurred at Tahmani Ghat at Mangaon around 7.30 am, an official said. The bus was carrying employees of a private firm who were heading to Harihareshwar, about 170 km from Pune, for New Year's Eve celebrations, he said. The bus was coming down from the ghat section when it overturned, killing two women passengers on the spot, the official said. Locals gathered at the scene and informed the police. As many as 147 people have died in road accidents in Mumbai between January and June 2023, the Maharashtra government informed the state assembly on Tuesday. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde gave the figures in a written reply in the House during the ongoing winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur.
