Int'l Road Federation wants no GST on helmets to make them affordable

International Road Federation (IRF) on Wednesday urged the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council and the Ministry of Finance to reduce tax on helmets from 18 per cent to nil, to encourage the use of the safety gear. IRF in a statement said two-wheeler riders are most vulnerable during road accident fatalities and lowering GST rates on helmets will help in making helmets more affordable for the masses amid increasing road accident fatalities. Citing a Bosch Report, IRF said India accounts for about 12 per cent of road accident deaths worldwide and the economic loss is about USD 15.71-38.81 billion to the Indian Economy. "The two-wheeler riders, being most vulnerable, constitute almost 31.4 per cent of road accidental deaths primarily due to head injuries. One of the most effective measures to reduce the two-wheeler accident injuries and fatalities is the use of standard helmets," said IRF president emeritus K K Kapila. 21 killed, 47 injured as bus carrying pilgrims falls into gorge in Jammu

Seven people were killed and 25 injured after a bus carrying pilgrims skidded off the road and rolled down into a gorge in Jammu district on Thursday, officials said. The accident took place at the Tangli morh in the Choki Chora belt of the district, they said, adding that the bus rolled around 150 feet down into the gorge. Seven people were killed and 25 injured, the officials said. The vehicle was carrying pilgrims from the Kurukshetra area of Haryana to the Shiv Khori area in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, they added. Earlier, the officials had said the accident had taken place in Rajouri district. A rescue operation involving police and locals has been launched and the injured have been shifted to the Akhnoor hospital and Government Medical College (GMC) hospital in Jammu, the officials said.

1.04 mn motor accident claims worth Rs 80,455 cr pending nationwide: RTI

As many as 10,46,163 motor accident claims worth Rs 80,455 crore are pending across the country and their numbers have increased constantly between 2018-19 and 2022-23, according to an information received through RTI Act. The details have been provided by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in response to the query filed by Supreme Court advocate K C Jain in April. In his query to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Jain had sought to know the total number of motor accident claims pending in the country with state- and district-wise details. He also sought to know the annual break up of claims instituted, disposed of and remaining during the last five years and the initiatives, if any, taken by the Centre for an early disposal of the motor accident claims. A 32-year-old man died after his bike collided with a juvenile's bike in south Mumbai on Thursday, police said. The incident came days after the May 19 Pune accident involving a Porsche car driven by a 17-year-old boy in which two people were killed. Bus ferrying workers in Chhattisgarh falls into soil mine pit, 15 killed

At least 15 people were killed and more than a dozen injured -- all employees of a private firm -- as the bus they were travelling in fell into a 'murum' soil mine pit in Chhattisgarh's Durg district on Tuesday night, police said. The accident took place around 8:30 pm near Khapri village under Kumhari police station limits when the victims, employees of a distillery company, were returning home after work, Durg Superintendent of Police Jitendra Shukla said. As per preliminary information, the bus with more than 30 people onboard skidded off the road and plunged into the 40 feet deep 'murum' mine, he said. "Initially 11 deaths were reported in the accident. Later four more persons died in the hospital," he added. Murum, a type of soil, is mostly used for construction.
