The road transport and highways ministry on Friday said it has suggested that truck drivers could be allowed to use a technology system wherein they can inform authorities about an accident so that such an incident will not be considered as a hit-and-run case under the new law. "The matter comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs and it will take the final decision," road transport and highways secretary Anurag Jain said. His comments come days after some truckers went on a strike to protest against stringent provisions for hit-and-run cases under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which is yet to come into force. According to Jain, truck drivers feel that if they stop after hitting a person to help the victim, they will be harmed by the public. Two women were killed and 55 others injured when a private bus carrying employees of a Pune-based firm overturned in a ghat in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Saturday, police said. The accident occurred at Tahmani Ghat at Mangaon around 7.30 am, an official said. The bus was carrying employees of a private firm who were heading to Harihareshwar, about 170 km from Pune, for New Year's Eve celebrations, he said. The bus was coming down from the ghat section when it overturned, killing two women passengers on the spot, the official said. Locals gathered at the scene and informed the police. The injured were initially rushed to the district hospital in Mangaon, he said. Nine out of the 55 injured persons have been referred to Navi Mumbai's MGM Hospital and Sasoon Hospital in Pune, as they suffered head injuries, the official said. As many as 147 people have died in road accidents in Mumbai between January and June 2023, the Maharashtra government informed the state assembly on Tuesday. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde gave the figures in a written reply in the House during the ongoing winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur. He was responding to a question raised by Congress legislator Ashok Chavan. Between January and June, 132 accidents took place in Mumbai and 147 people died in them. Bihar recorded the maximum number of road accidents near religious places in the country last year in which 2,995 people were killed, according to the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The state also registered a 13.1 per cent rise in overall road accidents in 2022 over the previous year, according to 'Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2022' released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). "A total of 2258 people (Male-1791 and Female-467) died in road accidents near religious places in rural areas across the state in 2022. This is highest in the country, followed by Uttar Pradesh (686), Jharkhand (525), Tamil Nadu (506), Madhya Pradesh (340) and Maharashtra (321)," it said. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) plans to roll out the facility of cashless medical treatment of road accident victims across the country in three to four months, a top government official said on Monday. Road Transport and Highways Secretary Anurag Jain while inaugurating an event organized by the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) noted India has the highest number of road accident deaths in the world. "Free and cashless medical treatment to accident-injured victims is part of the amended Motor Vehicle Act 2019 (MVA2019). Some states have implemented it but now the Ministry of Roads in league with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will be fully implementing it across the nation," Jain said. Pedestrians accounted for 43 per cent of road accident fatalities in Delhi in 2022 followed by motorcyclists at 38 per cent, police said on Tuesday. A total of 1,175 people lost their lives in 2023 till October 31 this year in 1,141 accidents that were classified as "fatal," police said on Monday. Fatal accidents in the national capital reduced by more than four per cent this year till October 31 and the number of deaths decreased by more than three per cent as compared to the corresponding period in 2022, police said. According to the data shared by police, a total of 4,646 fatal accidents took place in 2022 till October 31. Out of them, 1,197 were fatal accidents, which took 1,225 lives. This year, there were 4,803 reported accidents, with 1,141 classified as fatal and 1,175 people losing their lives in them. "In 2023, there was a 4.74 per cent reduction in the total number of fatal accidents, accompanied by a 3.27 per cent decrease in the number of persons killed compared to previous year," police said. MoRTH in a draft titled 'Approval of motor vehicles with regard to the Moving Off Information System for the Detection of Pedestrians and Cyclists' has specified the automotive industry standard for MOIS and will be notified after public consultation. At least five persons were killed and about 60 passengers injured when a state government bus and an omnibus collided head-on on the Chennai-Bengaluru national highway in the wee hours of Saturday, police said. A total of 94,009 road accidents were reported between 6 pm and 9 pm last year, accounting for over 20 per cent of the total mishaps in the country, according to a report by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The six hours from midnight till 6 am saw the least number of accidents, the report said. "In 2022, the time interval between 18:00-21:00 hrs recorded maximum number (94,009) of road accidents, accounting for 20.4 per cent of the total accidents in the country... and this is in line with the pattern seen over the past five years," the report said. The report titled 'Road accidents in India -- 2022' said this marks an 11.9 per cent year-on-year rise in accidents and a 9.4 per cent increase in fatalities. There was a 15.3 per cent surge in people getting injured in 2022. As per the report, during 2022, a total of 4,61,312 accidents were recorded in the country, of which, 1,51,997 (32.9 per cent ) took place on the national highways (NH), including expressways, 1,06,682 (23.1 per cent ) on state highways (SH) and the remaining 2,02,633 (43.9 per cent) on other roads. Nine people, including a doctor, were killed and 27 others injured in two separate road accidents involving a private bus and an ambulance in Maharashtra's Beed district, police said on Thursday. The speeding bus overturned at Aashta Fata around 6 am on Thursday when it bus was on way from Mumbai towards Beed, located about 120 km from here, they said. The bus was moving at a high speed. Its driver lost control over the wheels and as a result it met with the accident, the police said. The police later launched a rescue operation with the help of locals. Five persons were killed in the accident. Four of them were residents of Beed district and one was from Yavatmal, Ashti police station in-charge Santosh Khetmalas told PTI. Twenty six people were injured in the bus accident. They were taken to various hospitals for treatment, another official said. Twelve Indian pilgrims and a Nepali driver were injured when the SUV they were travelling overturned some 25 km west of Kathmandu on Tuesday morning, police said. The vehicle carrying the 12 pilgrims, including three children, overturned after the driver lost control at Indrsarowar Rural Municipality, near Matatirtha area in Makawanpur district. The vehicle was heading towards Kathmandu from Birgunj, a southern Nepal town. The injured passengers were taken to Kathmandu for treatment, the police said. The 25-year-old driver, identified as Anil Kumar Sah, has been detained for the purpose of investigation. The Indian nationals were on a pilgrimage tour of the Kathmandu Valley on the occasion of the Hindu festival Vijaya Dashami.
