Tight security at NDLS post deadly stampede, passenger influx continues

Tight security arrangements are in place at the New Delhi Railway Station, a day after a stampede claimed 18 lives there on Saturday night, police said. Delhi Police, along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP), has deployed additional personnel to manage rush at the station, which remained overcrowded on Sunday with thousands of passengers struggling to board trains amid heavy rush, an officer said. "We have set up barricades, intensified patrolling, and deployed quick reaction teams to prevent any further incidents. CCTV surveillance has also been enhanced, with control rooms monitoring real-time footage for crowd control," the officer said on Sunday. Announcements are being made to guide the commuters and avoid panic situations, he said. Saturday's stampede occurred at around 10 pm when a surge of passengers, confused by a mix-up in train announcements, rushed towards platform 16 via a narrow stairway. Trinidad and Tobago call for state of emergency in face of gang violence

A spike in deadly gang violence prompted the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago to implement a country-wide state of emergency Monday. The declaration followed a weekend marred by a spate of gang-related violence that resulted in multiple deaths, including five men believed to be victims of reprisal shootings. There is no doubt in my mind that we are dealing with an epidemic, National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds told reporters at a press conference. While the state of emergency will not see a curfew being implemented, residents were told to expect an increased police and military presence. Law enforcement will also have the ability to conduct searches, detain suspects for 48 hours and conduct arrests without a warrant. Schools, business and other activities, including upcoming New Year's celebrations are expected to proceed as scheduled. Acting Attorney General Stuart Young stressed that while there was general concern about the increased violence, there was particula

Australia announces $118 mn deal to enhance policing in Solomon Islands

Australia announced on Friday it will pay for more police in Solomon Islands and create a police training center in the South Pacific island nation's capital Honiara, where Chinese law enforcement instructors are already based under a bilateral security pact with Beijing. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australia would spend 190 million Australian dollars (USD 118 million) over four years on funding and training new Royal Solomon Islands Police Force recruits with a package that would reduce any need for outside support. My government is proud to make a significant investment in the police force of the Solomon Islands to ensure that they can continue to take primary responsibility for security in the Solomons, Albanese told reporters in Australia's capital Canberra. Albanese and his Solomons counterpart Jeremiah Manele said in a joint statement on Friday the package would build an enduring security capability in the Solomons, thereby reducing its reliance on external partners .

India, Israel share same challenges on security, extremism: Israeli envoy

India and Israel share similarities in challenges related to security and extremism, an Israeli envoy said on Saturday while underscoring the need for continued collaboration between the two nations. Speaking at the plenary session at the World Hindu Economic Forum (WHEF) 2024, Kobbi Shoshani, the Consul General of Israel to Mumbai, expressed solidarity with the Hindu community in Bangladesh, condemning the violence and persecution they face. "What is happening there is unacceptable," Shoshani said and emphasised the urgent need to address the challenges faced by the Hindu community in the neighbouring country. He articulated a shared understanding of suffering, drawing on the historical experiences of the Jewish community who have lived in India without fear or persecution. "We understand what it is like for daughters and children to be murdered and butchered by criminals," he said, referring to the attacks by Hamas on Israel last year. Odisha govt downgrades Naveen Patnaik's security from Z to Y category

The Odisha government has downgraded the security of the state's five-time former chief minister Naveen Patnaik, who is also the leader of opposition, from Z to Y category, an official said on Thursday. Most of the security personnel assigned to Patnaik have been withdrawn after a high-level committee dealing with security issues of important persons recommended the downgrade of the BJD chief's security, he said. Patnaik would now be assigned only two constables in Havildar rank, the official said. "Former chief ministers are provided with two PSOs. Additional security is provided as and when required," he said. Trump's campaign requests military aircraft, vehicles after Iran's threats

Donald Trump 's aides have requested a slew of stepped-up security measures, including military aircraft capable of shooting down surface-to-air missiles to transport the former president in the race's final stretch, amid growing concerns over threats from Iran in a campaign already shaken by violence. The campaign's highly unusual request comes as the Republican candidate faces death threats from Iran, which has also targeted other former Trump administration officials and has also been blamed for a widespread hack of top campaign officials. Trump narrowly survived one assassination attempt and U.S. Secret Service agents foiled a second, though neither case has been publicly linked to Iranian actors. Beyond a military plane, the campaign has asked for special armored vehicles typically reserved for sitting presidents, expanded temporary flight restrictions over his rallies and his residences, reimbursements for decoy aircraft, and more money for the U.S. Secret Service and local law
