Snow cover atop Mount Everest retreated by 150 metres, indicating a lack of snow accumulation during the winter season of 2024-2025, researchers have noted. Analysing NASA satellite images from October 2023 till early January 2025, trends illustrated "a rise in snow line through January in both 2024 and 2025", glaciologist Mauri Pelto, a professor of environmental science at Nichols College, US, wrote in a blog post on February 2. At 8,849 metres above sea level, Mount Everest is the tallest point on Earth. The Himalayan peak is located between Nepal and Tibet. 'Snow line' refers to the boundary or elevation at which snow permanently stays on a mountain. A 'rising snow line' -- in which snow melts at lower heights, forcing the snow line boundary up a mountainside -- is suggestive of a warming climate. Pelto said that warmer and drier conditions have been prevailing in recent winters, including those of 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025, which are driving a reduced snow cover, higher snow .

After a freezing winter storm shut schools, cut power and cancelled or delayed flights, the South was slowly thawing Sunday as warmer weather melted snow and ice. Crews worked furiously and by Sunday morning power had been restored to parts of North Carolina and South Carolina where tens of thousands of customers lost electricity over the last few days, according to Duke Energy. In Atlanta, around 1,000 flights were cancelled or delayed Saturday. Airport officials said Sunday morning that all roadways and parking lots had been cleared of snow and all runways were operational. Crews have not slowed down, in fact, we have brought in additional resources to help us get across the finish line, read a press release on The City of Atlanta Government's Facebook page. According to the post, power had been restored to 97 per cent of Georgia Power customers by Sunday. Much of the winter weather has moved out of the area, said Dylan Lusk, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Peachtree,
A powerful winter storm that dumped heavy snow and glazed roads with ice across much of Texas and Oklahoma lumbered eastward into Southern US states Friday, making for dicey travel and a rare snow day for many students. Arkansas and North Carolina mobilised their National Guards for tasks such as helping stranded motorists, as governors in multiple states declared states of emergency. School was cancelled for millions of children from Texas to Georgia and as far east as South Carolina. The storm piled up more than a year's worth of snowfall on some Southern cities. As much as a foot (about 31 centimetres) fell in parts of Arkansas. There were reports of nearly 10 inches (about 25 centimetres) in Little Rock, a city that averages 3.8 inches (9.7 centimetres) a year. More than 7 inches (about 18 centimetres) fell at Memphis International Airport in Tennessee since late Thursday. The city usually sees 2.7 inches (6.9 centimetres) a year. In some areas where snow tapered off, such as ..

A blast of snow, ice, wind and plunging temperatures stirred up dangerous travel conditions in parts of the central US on Sunday, as a disruptive winter storm brought the possibility of the heaviest snowfall in a decade to some areas. Snowfall and ice blanketed major roadways in parts of Kansas and Indiana, where the state's National Guard was activated to help any motorists getting stuck. At least 8 inches of snow were expected, particularly north of Interstate 70 as the National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings from Kansas and Missouri where blizzard conditions were reported to New Jersey into Monday. For locations in this region that receive the highest snow totals, it may be the heaviest snowfall in at least a decade, the weather service said early Sunday. The polar vortex of ultra-cold air usually stays penned up around the North Pole, spinning like a top. But sometimes it escapes or stretches down to the US, Europe or Asia and that's when large numbers of people
