The skidding of SpiceJet Boeing 737 plane at Mumbai on Tuesday night disrupted flight operations and put a spotlight on safety concerns at the airport.Fifty one flights were diverted and over 150 canceled through the day following the closure of main runway. Fluctuating winds and poor visibility compounded the problem. The Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed budget carrier Spicejet and its co-founder Ajay Singh's appeals against a earlier single judge order asking the company to pay Rs 579 crore to Kalanithi Maran and his KAL Airways as interim relief in a share transfer dispute, while directing the two sides to initiate arbitration.Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Yogesh Khanna however modified the July 29, 2016 single judge order and directed Spicejet to deposit Rs 250 crore in cash and Rs 329 crore as bank guarantee by August 31 and July 31 respectively. The court concluded that the modification of the earlier order - requiring Spicejet to provide the entire Rs 579 crore amount in equal installments over a twelve month period - was essential in light of the unpredictable nature of likely injury that could be caused to the commercial operations of the company if the entire amount was secured through a deposit.
