Mumbai post 400 in 50 overs, crush Railways by 173 runs

Shreyas Iyer and Prithvi Shaw hit blistering hundreds to help Mumbai pile on 400 for five in fifty overs and defeat Railways by 173 runs on Sunday to record a third successive win in the Vijay Hazare Trophy here. After opting to bat, it was a dominant show from Mumbai. Iyer (144 in 118 balls) and Shaw (129 in 81 balls) brutally punished a listless Railways attack. After that they bundled out the opposition for 227 in 42.4 overs, with Shams Mulani returning with figures of 3-26. Mumbai is only the second side in domestic cricket to record 400 or plus score after Madhya Pradesh's 412/6 versus Railways in 2010. After Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane (3) departed early, it was the Iyer-Shaw duo who stole the limelight at the famed M Chinnaswamy Stadium. While Iyer smashed eight fours and ten sixes, teen-sensation Shaw had 14 fours and six other hits over the fence. The two conjured a 161-run stand for the second wicket to lay foundation for a big total. 18-year-old Shaw, who ...

Gavaskar impressed with Rohit Sharma's captaincy

Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar is in all praises for Rohit Sharma's captaincy acumen.Rohit was named as the captain of the Indian team for the ongoing Asia Cup, after the selectors had decided to rest current skipper Virat Kohli, in a bid to keep him fit for the upcoming series with West Indies and Australia. The 69-year-old 'Little Master' said he was admired by Rohit's captaincy style ever since he first led the Mumbai Indians franchise team to victory in the cash-rich Indian Premier League in 2013."The first time he led Mumbai Indians to an IPL win, that was his first season as a captain and he impressed straight away with his knowledge of what to do next more than what to plan," ICC quoted Gavaskar as saying.Rohit's captaincy has not affected his form, as he has led India to victories in three matches in the Asia Cup so far. He has also struck two half-centuries in those matches, which also includes an unbeaten 83 against Bangladesh.Gavaskar added, "Every time he has got an ..

Pliskova pummels tearful Osaka to win Tokyo crown

Former world number one Karolina Pliskova stunned Japanese tennis sensation Naomi Osaka in straights sets to capture the Pan Pacific Open on Sunday. The fourth seed took just 63 minutes to complete a clinical 6-4, 6-4 victory over the newly crowned US Open champion in Tokyo, bringing Osaka's 10-match winning streak to a shuddering halt. "I'm just happy it didn't go to three sets," said the Czech, who had been taken the distance in her previous three matches. "My serve is my biggest weapon and it was key today," added Pliskova after scooping an 11th career title. "Naomi was maybe a little bit tired, you could see that. But the future is bright for her and congrats to her for an incredible few weeks." The players had split their previous two meetings, but Osaka started the final as favourite after her historic New York triumph. And the third seed began in menacing fashion, thumping an ace down the middle on the first point and holding her first two service games to love. But Pliskova ...

Country needs more quality singles players: Amritraj

Indian tennis legend Vijay Amritraj on Sunday said that the country needs to develop quality singles players if it wants to be in the elite group in the world. India recently lost to Serbia in the Davis World Group Play-off tie 0-4 and Amritraj felt the country was lacking in the number of quality singles players. "The focus has to be on singles for India. We need four good singles players. There is no point just having good doubles players. Since we do not have enough number of good singles players, we are not being able to qualify for the elite group," Amritraj told PTI. India will now compete in a 24-team qualifying event (home and away format) in February next year to qualify for the 18-team Davis Cup Finals. About the performance of players like Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri, he said they have done well but need to work on their fitness. "Yuki has done well well. The problem is that he is not able to play a full year yet. He is not fit enough to play a full season, which ..

Joshua overpowers Povetkin to retain world heavyweight titles

Britain's Anthony Joshua retained his world heavyweight titles by inflicting the first stoppage defeat of Alexander Povetkin's professional career with a ruthless seventh-round finish at Wembley Stadium. A previously close contest turned in Joshua's favour decisively when he sent the Russian crashing to the canvas with a straight right hand and left hook on Saturday. Povetkin gamely beat the count but Joshua piled in before referee Steve Gray stopped the contest at one minute and 59 seconds of the seventh round. Victory saw Joshua extend his unbeaten professional record to 22 wins from 22 fights, with 21 knockouts, in front of a raucous home crowd. "Povetkin is a very tough challenger and he proved it tonight," Joshua told Sky Sports. "I realised he was strong to the head but weak to the body. "I got my knockout streak back, I found my right hand again." Joshua was putting his International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organisation belts on the line ...

Frustrated Ibrahimovic coy on Galaxy future

Zlatan Ibrahimovic plans to discuss his future with Los Angeles Galaxy chiefs after a frustrating first season in Major League Soccer. Swedish star Ibrahimovic has made a prolific start to his MLS career, scoring 17 goals in 22 games since joining the Galaxy from Manchester United in March. However the 36-year-old striker's efforts have not been enough to transform the Galaxy's fortunes, with the club languishing in the bottom half of the Western Conference and struggling to make the playoffs. Ibrahimovic, who has a contract through the 2019 season, was reluctant to confirm his plans for next year, according to comments in the Los Angeles Times. "I don't know. This I have to discuss," Ibrahimovic said when asked about 2019. "This is not the moment to talk about that. It's something I'll discuss with the club. What they want, what I want. So let's see." Ibrahimovic said while he was pleased with his fitness, he was less happy with the Galaxy's results. "I'm happy, I'm physically ...

Late Brozovic winner rescues Inter in Genoa thriller

Croatia's Marcelo Brozovic grabbed a late winner as Inter Milan followed their Champions League heroics against Tottenham with a 1-0 Serie A win at Sampdoria as tensions ran high during a game in which three goals were disallowed. World Cup runner-up Brozovic scored four minutes into injury time in Genoa after Radja Nainggolan and Kwadwo Asamoah both had goals ruled out for Inter, with Sampdoria's Gregoire Defrel also denied by VAR on Saturday. Inter Milan coach Luciano Spalletti was also banished from the touchline by officials for his wild celebration of the winning goal. "I turned towards the camera to shout 'goal' and the fourth official told me I had done it with too much force," Spalletti told streaming service DAZN. "It was too important a goal, like a liberation, and they interpreted it as something with too much emotional reaction," added Spalletti. "I didn't do anything wrong." The win followed Inter's 2-1 Champions League comeback victory in the final minutes against ...

Asensio scores the winner as Real battle past Espanyol

Real Madrid moved top of La Liga after Marco Asensio's goal proved the difference in a scrappy 1-0 win over Espanyol. Their victory at the Santiago Bernabeu may only give Madrid 24 hours above Barcelona, who play Girona on Sunday, with their perfect record still intact. More pressing for Julen Lopetegui will be the defensive slackness that made this arguably the least assured of the six competitive games he has overseen so far, including last weekend's draw away to Athletic Bilbao. There were changes, with Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Dani Carvajal all rested, the latter not even included on the bench, following Real's win over Roma in the Champions League on Wednesday. But if they gift Atletico Madrid the same chances in the city derby next weekend, they may not find their opponents so generous. Atletico had earlier ground out a 2-0 win away to Getafe. "The game was nervous and in the last 15 minutes we lacked control," Lopetegui said. "These post-Champions League games are always really

Federer, Zverev put Europe on top at Laver Cup

Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev powered Europe into a commanding 7-1 lead over the World team at the Laver Cup here, winning their respective singles matches in contrasting fashion. World number two Federer was barely ruffled as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nick Kyrgios at Chicago's United Center on Saturday. Earlier, Zverev saved a match point to defeat John Isner in day two's opening singles rubber. Zverev, 21, dug deep to hold off the big-serving Isner to win 3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 10-7. Under the format being used for the tournament, a 10-point tiebreak is used instead of a decisive third set. After dominating Friday's opening day, winning three out of the four matches, Europe's progress looked to be checked after Isner grabbed the first set against Zverev. But rising German star Zverev showed great determination in saving a match point at 6-5 down in the second-set tie-break to level the contest. Zverev then raced into the lead in the 10-point match tie-break before closing out

Asia Cup: India look to continue dominance against Pakistan

India will be looking to dominate arch-rival Pakistan once again and book their place in the finals of the ongoing Asia Cup, as the two sides face off in what promises to be another enthralling clash in their Super Fours fixture at the Dubai International Stadium here on Sunday.India will be eyeing a final berth in the prestigious tournament after winning three games in as many matches, while Pakistan will be looking to step up their game after a massive scare against Afghanistan in their previous match. On September 19, India brushed aside Pakistan by eight wickets in the group stage after the bowlers and batsmen produced a clinical display to make short work of Sarfraz Ahmed's team.Even without their regular skipper Virat Kohli, the top order led by stand-in captain Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have scored plenty of runs, with the middle order also chipping in.Even bowlers, especially the spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have impressed with the ball, making life ...
