Ministry drops archery coach Teja's name for Dronacharya award

Archery coach Jiwanjot Singh Teja was on Wednesday dropped from the list of Dronacharya award nominees due to a past case of indiscipline while the Sports Ministry cleared all athletes recommended by the selection committee for Khel Ratna, Arjuna and Dhyan Chand awards. Teja was among five coaches named by the selection committee for Dronacharya award on Sunday but it came to light that he had served a one-year ban following an incident of indiscipline during the 2015 World University Games in Korea. "Teja had served a ban of one year for indiscipline after an incident that happened in 2015 during the World Universiade in Korea. He was the chief archery coach there and the women's team under him could not reach on time for competition. India had to forfeit a match due to the late arrival," a source from the ministry told PTI on condition of anonymity. "The Archery Association of India had banned him for one year for the incident. So, the minister has decided to drop him from the list .

Sheldon Jackson struck his sixth List A hundred, overshadowing Shivam Mavi's hat-trick on his Uttar Pradesh debut to guide Saurashtra to a 25-run win in a Group B match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Wednesday. Asia Cup: Hardik Pandya sustains back injury, stretchered off field

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya was Wednesday stretchered off the field during the Asia Cup group league encounter against Pakistan after sustaining an "acute lower back injury". The incident took place in the 18th over of the Pakistan innings when the all-rounder was bowling his fifth over. It was the fifth delivery and Pandya, after completing the follow through, immediately felt his lower back and lay on the ground in considerable pain. He was unable to get up and was stretchered off and was taken for medical examination. "Hardik Pandya has an acute lower back injury. He is able to stand at the moment and the medical team is assessing him now. Manish Pandey is on the field as his substitute," BCCI's media team updated. Pandya's figures were 4.5-0-24-0 after Babar Azam's catch was dropped by Mahendra Singh Dhoni when the batsman was on 32. Azam however was later dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav.

Hockey India names 18-member junior team for Sultan of Johor Cup

Hockey India on Wednesday named an 18-member junior men's team for the upcoming Sultan of Johor Cup to be held in Malaysia from October 6-13. The Indian team is scheduled to play five round-robin matches against Malaysia, New Zealand, Japan, Australia and Great Britain. It will play its opening match against host Malaysia on October 6. The top two teams at the end of the round-robin matches will face each other in the final on October 13 whereas the remaining four teams will play classification matches. The tournament will be played in Johor Bahru. The team will be captained by Mandeep Mor, while Shilanand Lakra will shoulder the duties of vice-captain. FIBA 3x3 World Tour basketball event in Hyderabad on September 22-23

The Hyderabad Masters, the seventh stage of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour 2018, will be held here on September 22 and 23. The event, to be held at People's Plaza in the city, is the first ever FIBA international 3x3 event being hosted in India. The Hyderabad Masters will see the participation of the best international 3x3 teams, including world number one Novi Sad. Two Indian teams, Delhi 3BL and Bangalore 3BL, will compete in the event. The qualification of the Indian teams was decided on the basis of the country's first ever FIBA recognised 3x3 league, 3x3 Pro Basketball League (3BL) which was conducted from June 9 to August 26 across the country. BAI distributes 1.6 crore to state Association

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has distributed cash incentive of Rs 1.6 crores to the member state associations for development of the sport across the country. The decision was taken on Monday during the Executive Council (EC) meeting, presided over by BAI President Himanta Biswa Sarma. The cash incentives will be distributed among the 30 state associations with each receiving a sum of Rs 5 lakh for the development and promotion of the sport in the grassroots level. "This financial assistance to state associations is the beginning of our vision of making all states self-sustaining in the longer run. It will help them promote and develop badminton in their region more assiduously," Sarma said.
