Asiad bronze was consolation, looking ahead with fresh approach: Harendra

The Asian Games setback still fresh in his mind, Indian hockey team chief coach Harendra Singh is determined to start afresh with a positive mindset and make amends in the upcoming international assignments. Going into the Asiad as the defending champions, India ended its campaign on a disappointing note with a bronze medal after beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the third-place game. "The bronze medal was a consolation and there is no excuse for not making it to the final of the 18th Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang," Harendra said. "There is no point looking back at the loss but now it's critical for us to look ahead with a fresh, positive approach," he added. Hockey India Wednesday named a 25-member core group for a national camp in Bhubaneswar from September 16 as part of preparation for the Asian Champions Trophy and the World Cup. "The idea of training in Bhubaneswar was to get acclimatised to the conditions. We are also looking at playing on the newly-laid turf at the Kalinga Hockey

South Korea to propose joint Olympics with North at summit: minister

South Korea plans to propose a joint hosting of the 2032 Summer Olympics with North Korea at next week's summit in Pyongyang, sports minister Do Jong-hwan said Wednesday, according to a Yonhap report. Do will make the proposal when he accompanies President Moon Jae-in to the North Korean capital for a third summit with Kim Jong Un from Tuesday, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said. "I plan to make this proposal to the North for the settlement of peace" on the Korean peninsula, he was quoted as telling journalists in Tokyo. "Seoul and Pyongyang would co-host the games", he said. The two Koreas discussed the co-hosting of the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics but negotiations fell apart over differences on how to share the events. North and South Korea formed their first-ever unified Olympic team -- a joint women's ice hockey squad -- for February's winter games in the South Korean resort of Pyeongchang, leading to a diplomatic thaw. Olympics chief Thomas Bach said this month he was open to ..

Ponting left 'confused' over Maxwell omission

Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has said that omission of batting all-rounder Glenn Maxwell from the 15-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan is a bit confusing for him as he did not get what exact message the selectors are trying to convey. The 43-year-old further stated that selectors' decision to deny him a chance to play for Australia A, which is on a tour to India, was also a bizarre thing for him to fathom."If I was Maxi I'd be thinking, 'why didn't you give me the chance to actually go there (to India) and push my case to get myself into the team?" That's all a bit bizarre to me. If I was Maxi and I hadn't been given the chance to play for Australia A, I'd be ropeable," cricket.com.au quoted Ponting, as saying."They didn't pick him on that Australia A tour and they've said they've seen him play enough in those conditions and knew what he could do. But if you think about it now, that must have actually meant they weren't going to pick him at

Kohli lauds 'great ambassador for game' Cook

A great ambassador for the game who has never gone out of line -- this was India captain Virat Kohli's tribute to England batting legend Alastair Cook, who retired from international cricket here. Cook scored a century in his last Test to end his international career on a high as England completed a 4-1 win over India in the five-match series Tuesday. "He's a great example for everyone to love Test cricket so much, and has so much determination and passion to play for the country. He's been a great ambassador for the game," Kohli said in the post-match press conference. "I certainly have a lot of respect for him because he's one guy who has not gone out of line ever. Doesn't say a word to anyone in a negative manner, just carries on with his work and he's very sure about his work as well. I wish him well." Kohli said Cook's determination reflects in his batting as he scored 147 -- his 33rd century -- in his last Test. "I asked him on the field are you having second thoughts that now ..

McGrath backs Anderson to breach 600-wicket barrier

Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath has backed James Anderson to breach the 600-wicket barrier after the Englishman overtook him to become the most successful fast bowler in the history of Test cricket. Anderson cleaned up Mohammed Shami on the fifth day of the fifth and final Test at The Oval to help England win the game by 118 runs and pocket the five-match series 4-1. The wicket enabled Anderson to overtake McGrath as the most successful fast bowler in Test history, with 564 wickets. He is now behind the spin trio of Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne (708) and India's Anil Kumble (619) in the list of Test bowlers with most wickets. "Just to see Jimmy now, he looks fit and keen and running around, it depends on what he wants to do. He has gone past me and I think the next bar is 600 Test wickets," McGrath was quoted as saying by the 'BBC'. "If he can get to 600 Test wickets, that's an incredible effort, and if he is still got that drive, that passion to get yourself up, to ...

Hope Anderson continues to terrorise batsmen: Root

Skipper Joe Root paid rich tribute to James Anderson for becoming the most successful fast bowler in Test history and hoped he will continue to spearhead the English attack and terrorise batsmen in future. Anderson overtook Australia's Glenn McGrath to become the most successful fast bowler in Test history, with 564 wickets. He is behind Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne (708) and India's Anil Kumble (619) in the list of Test bowlers with most wickets. "What Jimmy has achieved and what he's capable of achieving still is astounding really. He looked very determined - and when he's in that mood, you want to just keep him going as long as possible," Root said on Tuesday. "For him to be in the same league as McGrath, and now chasing the big two spinners, is phenomenal. I think the most exciting thing is he's bowling at his best and I can see that carrying forward for a long time still. "I hope there's going to be a number of series in the future where he is leading the attack, and .

Lukaku bags double as Belgium sweep Iceland aside

Romelu Lukaku scored two goals as World Cup semi-finalists Belgium began their Nations League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win away to Iceland on Tuesday. Eden Hazard converted a 29th-minute penalty after a foul on Lukaku, with the Manchester United striker netting a quick-fire second before adding a third in the closing stages. Lukaku, also on the mark in Friday's 4-0 friendly defeat of Scotland, was brought down by a clumsy tackle from Sverrir Ingason and Hazard rolled the resulting spot-kick to the left of Hannes Halldorsson. He then got himself on the scoresheet two minutes later by following up a rebound after a powerful Vincent Kompany header was pawed into his path by Halldorsson. Thomas Meunier struck the outside of the post on the hour, although Belgium ultimately transformed their dominance into a third with nine minutes to play as Lukaku slotted away a fizzing cross from Dries Mertens. Roberto Martinez's side move level on three points with Switzerland, who demolished ...
