GCA defends Azharuddin son's selection for Ranji Trophy

Goa Cricket Association (GCA) secretary Daya Pagi has defended the decision of selecting former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin's son Asaduddin in the state team for the upcoming season of Ranji Trophy, following the uproar over the same.Earlier, former Chennai Super Kings player Shadab Jakati had raised the objection over the selection saying that Asaduddin holds no experience of playing a first-class match and his inclusion in the team is baseless. In reply, Pagi argued that they just gave a chance to the cricketer to test his abilities and there is no other motive behind the move."His son is also a cricketer, and we thought why not give him a chance and see how good he is, after all we can't afford to pay big money to some other professionals. There is no other motive," ESPNcricinfo.com quoted Pagi, as saying.Reflecting on the selection move, the head coach of the Goa domestic team Prakash Mayekar said that the decision is completely managerial and further claimed that his ...

Vikas Krishan (75kg) overcame a bleeding left eye to assure himself of a third successive medal at the Asian Games, while Amit Panghal (49kg) produced a power-packed performance in his quarterfinal bout to guarantee a maiden podium finish here today. However, it was curtains for world silver-medallist Sarjubala Devi (51kg) after she lost her quarterfinal bout 0-5 to up and coming Chinese Chang Yuan, a Youth Olympics gold-medallist and also a former youth worth champion. Her loss means that Indian women boxers would be returning without a medal from the Asiad for the first time since the event was added to the Games in 2010. The celebrated M C Mary Kom had claimed a gold and L Sarita Devi and Pooja Rani fetched a bronze each in the 2014 edition. Vikas, a gold medallist in 2010 and bronze winner in 2014, prevailed on a split 3-2 verdict against China's Tuoheta Erbieke Tanglatihan in the quarterfinals. Shanghai looks to Olympic hosts in push to become 'sports city'

Shanghai aspires to become a sporting capital like Olympic hosts Tokyo and Paris, and staging a Games would be "the highest ideal", a top city official says. While stopping short of committing to an Olympic bid, Shanghai's deputy director general of sports told AFP that officials in China's biggest city would be taking an interest in how Tokyo and Paris fare with the Summer Games in 2020 and 2024. "It's not the first time for these world-renowned sports cities to host the Olympic Games. They must have a lot of good experience in hosting," Luo Wenhua, of the Shanghai Administration of Sports, said in a rare interview with international media. "I think the next step may be to strengthen communication and let us learn from them." Shanghai already hosts several major annual sporting events including a Formula One race, men's and women's golf, Diamond League athletics and the Shanghai Masters tennis, which is just a rung below Grand Slams and the ATP Finals. In total, Shanghai stages about

Japan basketball players suspended after buying sex

Four Japanese basketball players kicked out of the Asian Games for paying prostitutes for sex will be suspended for a year, officials said Wednesday. Japan Basketball Association chief Yuko Mitsuya told reporters the players would be barred from official tournaments for a year, adding their action "damages the honour and trust of Japan's sporting world". They would be allowed to take part in training, however, Mitsuya added. The players were spotted in a notorious red light district of the Indonesian capital Jakarta wearing their national jerseys and were promptly sent home in disgrace. The expulsion of Yuya Nagayoshi, Takuya Hashimoto, Takuma Sato and Keita Imamura came as a major embarrassment for Japan, which is gearing up for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. "I deeply apologise for our careless actions that have brought disgrace on not only basketball fans but also all Japanese people," Sato told a news conference last week after the four returned to Tokyo. They were believed to have ...

Boxer Amit enters Asian Games semis, assured of medal

Indian boxer Amit Panghal (49kg) advanced to the semifinals to assure himself of a maiden medal at the Asian Games here today. The Armyman, who is a Commonwealth Games silver-medallist, defeated South Korea's Kim Jang Ryong 5-0 with a thoroughly dominating performance to enter the last-four stage where he will take on Filipino Carlo Paalam. In the boxing competition, semifinalists are entitled to bronze medals. The 22-year-old from Haryana, making his debut at the Games, intimidated his 20-year-old opponent, using his right straights to good effect. On the other hand, the Korean, despite being a southpaw and the taller of two, simply withdrew after a decent show in the opening three minutes. Amit was brilliant with his footwork, moving around craftily to exhaust his rival, who looked unsure for most of the bout. It has been a brilliant year for the Indian, who won back-to-back gold medals at the inaugural India Open and the prestigious Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria. This ...

Buoyant India ready to carry winning momentum

Having made a commendable comeback from the brink of a series defeat, India will look to increase their stranglehold on hosts England to draw parity when the two teams square off for the fourth Test, here tomorrow. After couple of morale crushing defeats in the first two Tests (31 runs at Edgbaston) and (innings defeat at the Lord's), Virat Kohli's men produced a splendid all-round performance to win the third Test in Nottingham by 203 runs. While India still train 1-2 in the five match series, there are fears that Kohli's team might just emulate Sir Don Bradman's Australia that won the 1936 Ashes after being 0-2 down. Surprisingly, this will only be the third Test at the Rose Bowl Stadium. England had previously played Sri Lanka (2011) and India (2014), winning the latter game by 266 runs. The hosts will count on that previous win to boost confidence and close out the series, albeit given their most recent performance it will be a tough ask. With the Indian pacers exposing the ...
