Veteran Leander Paes was today dropped from the Indian Davis Cup squad for the World Group away tie against Serbia scheduled from September 14 to 16. The reigning Asian Games champion pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan will be playing the doubles while three singles players will be Yuki Bhambri, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Prajnesh Gunneswaran. Rohan Bopanna is currently ranked 37 in the ATP doubles list while Divij is a notch below at 38. The members of the selection committee, SP Misra (Chairman), Balram Singh, Nandan Bal, Rohit Rajpal and coach Zeeshan Ali selected the team via tele-conference. Mahesh Bhupathi and Zeeshan Ali are the non-playing captain and coach respectively. The team will be accompanied by two physios as well for this tie. India today bagged two medals in Kurash, a form of wrestling indigenous to central Asia, with Pincky Balhara and Malaprabha Yallappa Jadhav winning silver and bronze respectively in the women's 52kg category at the ongoing Asian Games here today. The 19-yeard-old Pincky lost 0-10 to favourite Gulnor Sulaymanova of Uzbekistan in the gold medal clash to settle for the silver. Pincky earlier defeated Tsou Chiawen of Taipei 5-0 in Round of 16 before getting the better of Susanti Terry Kusumawardani of Sri Lanka 3-0 in the quarterfinals. She beat Abdumajidova Oysuluv of Uzbekistan 1-0 in the last four stage. Earlier in the day, Yallappa lost to Sulaymanova 0-10 in the semifinal to claim the bronze as both the semifinalists are assured of medals. The Tamil Nadu government today lauded Dharun Ayyasamy who won the silver medal in the 400 metre hurdles at the ongoing Jakarta Asian games and announced a cash incentive of Rs 30 lakh for him. Congratulating the 21-year-old athlete from Tirupur, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said Ayyasamy had made everyone proud by his feat. Ayyasamy had earlier won the gold in the 4x400 metre relay and 400 metre hurdles at the 2016 South Asian games. Manjit Singh upstaged pre-race favourite compatriot Jinson Johnson to win gold in men's 800m in a 1-2 finish for India in the event here today. The 28-year-old Manjit ran his personal best time of 1 minute and 46.15 seconds to win his maiden major international medal. Johnson, who smashed legendary Sriram Singh's 42-year-old 800m national record in June during the National Inter-State Athletics Championships, finished second in 1:46.35. Maharashtra batsman Pavan Shah has replaced Aryan Juyal as the captain of the India U-19 squad for the Asia Cup, starting in Dhaka from September 29. Most of the players from India's tour of Sri Lanka were retained while Juyal has been dropped. The Karnataka government would consider relaxing existing rules to encourage more sports people to join the police department, Deputy chief minister G Parameshwara said today. He was speaking at a function got up to felicitate Kabaddi player Usha Rani, part of the Indian women's team that won the silver medal at the ongoing Jakarta Asian Games. The Kabaddi player is presently a police constable posted at the Dodda Ballapura police station. "We assure Usha Rani that she would beelevated to 'B' grade post," the deputy chief minister said. A 'B' grade post is an officer rank in the police department, police said. Parameshwara presented a cheque for Rs 15 lakh issued by the Youth Services and Sports Department.
