Veterans cherish memories of 'skipper' Wadekar

Ranji stalwart Milind Rege today described late Ajit Wadekar as a captain for whom the players wanted to perform. Wadekar, who had led India to their first Test series win in West Indies and England, passed away here on August 15 following prolonged illness. "You wanted to perform for Ajit. The entire Mumbai team wanted to perform for one man (Wadekar)," said Rege who played under Wadekar for Mumbai. Rege, along with Vasu Paranjpe, and former India player Pravin Amre walked down the memory lane at a condolence meeting held here today in memeory of Wadekar. Anand settles for eighth draw in as many games, Sinquefield chess set for close finish

Five-time world champion Viswanthan Anand registered his eighth draw in as many games when he split points with Fabiano Caruana of the United States in penultimate round of the Sinquefield Cup chess tournament here. For Anand's fans, this was a let-down as Caruana only tried to consolidate his position atop the tables. Neeraj Chopra today became the first Indian javelin thrower to clinch an Asian Games gold as the country's track and field athletes continued their impressive show by adding three more silver medals here. Neena Varakil, a daily labourer's daughter, won a silver in women's long jump while veteran long distance runner Sudha Singh and Dharun Ayyasamy also finished second in women's 3000m steeplechase and men's 400m hurdles respectively. Two new teams to feature in season 2 of T10 League

Two new teams -- The Karachians and Northern Warriors -- will will feature in the second season of the T10 League, world's first 10-over cricket league to be held in the UAE from November 23 to December 2. Defending champions Kerala Kings and runners-up Punjabi Legends have been clubbed in separate pools in the second season of the league. The Karachians and Northern Warriors have been added to the list of the earlier six teams. The T10 League, recognised by the International Cricket Council, will have eight teams -- Kerala Kings, Punjab Legends, Maratha Arabians, Bengal Tigers, The Karachians, Rajputs, Northern Warriors and Pakhtoons. T10 League was launched last year by T10 Sports Management to popularise the game of cricket in its shortest format that concludes within less than 90 minutes in which two teams bat it out in ten overs or just 60 balls thrilling the crowd.

Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra made the country proud on Monday as he clinched a gold medal in the men's javelin throw event of the ongoing 18th edition of the Asian Games.The 20-year-old, who finished with a brilliant throw of 88.06m to make it to the top of the podium, also posted a national record as he got past his previous best of 87.43m which he had set during the Diamond League in Doha, earlier this year.The 2018 Commonwealth Games gold-medalist missed the Asian Games record by a meagre margin of 1.09m.Reflecting on his victory, Chopra said he had prepared well for the event and was completely focused to get gold for the country. BCCI declares Bhuvaneshwar Kumar fit, to play for Ind A

The BCCI today declared pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar fit and said he will be a part of India A squad in the ongoing Quadrangular series. "Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been declared fit and will be a part of the India A squad in the ongoing Quadrangular series," the BCCI said in a statement. Kumar had aggravated his lower back injury while playing the third India-England ODI match in the UK.
