Hitting the bull's eye: Young shooters raise hopes of bright future after Asiad haul

Since 2015, the year he reached the legal age of shooting with firearms, Shardul Vihan has been having his breakfast, and often dinner, inside a car while travelling from Meerut to Delhi and back. For three years, accompanied by a family friend of the Vihans, the double trap shooter has been undertaking a nearly 250km round trip to learn the basics of shooting, at a range tucked away in a corner of the national capital. Aged 15, the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range has been his second home, where he would have his lunch, and from where he emerged to become the youngest Indian shooter to win a medal at the Asian Games. The silver in an event, which will not be a part of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, has prompted him to focus on trap. Shardul, whose father is into real estate, picked up a gun for the first time when he was nine. In recent times, the number of Indian teenagers winning medals at the big stage has gone up exponentially, and Shardul is one of them. Coming from the interiors of the .

Vikas through to quarters in Asian Games

Chasing a third successive Asian Games medal, Indian boxer Vikas Krishan (75kg) made a strong start, out-punching Pakistan's Tanveer Ahmed in his pre-quarterfinal bout here today. Vikas, who won a gold in 2010 and a bronze in 2014, prevailed 5-0 after a dominating performance in which his right hooks stood out. The Indian's powerful punches were mostly met with feeble counters by the Pakistani, who received one standing eight count during the bout and was left quite shaken at the end of it. The Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Indian also sustained a cut above his left eye during the bout ut did not seem too affected. He will be up against China's Tuoheta Erbieke Tanglatihan in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Tanglatihan defeated Turkmenistan's Nursahet Pazzyyev in his last-16 stage bout. If Vikas goes on to win a medal at the Games, he would become the first Indian boxer with a hat-trick of podium finishes at the mega-event.

Anxious athletes from quake-hit Lombok hope to spread smiles back home

For athletes from quake-hit Lombok competing at their own country's Asian Games, the pressure is far greater than the usual quest for gold. Competitors from the picturesque island have anxiously followed news of deadly earthquakes that killed more than 500 people, hundreds of miles from Indonesia's host cities Jakarta and Palembang -- and hope their performances can bring a few smiles to faces back home. "I was so worried about my family -- it was a little hard to sleep," said 18-year-old sprinter Lalu Muhammad Zohri, who hails from the worst-affected northern part of the island. "They called me to tell me not to worry, to just focus on my race. I tried my best," he added, after reaching the men's 100m final, where he finished seventh. "Now I can't wait to go to Lombok to see my family." Bronze-winning beach volleyball duo Dhita Juliana and Putu Dini Jasita Utami, who are also from Lombok, have captured the hearts of the home fans cheering for them across the country and from the ...

Mourinho an 'inspiration', says Spurs boss Pochettino

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino says Jose Mourinho is an inspiration despite his current frustrations at Manchester United as he prepares his side for Monday's Premier League clash at Old Trafford. United have had a turbulent start to the new season, with Mourinho appearing to be at odds with the club's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and French World Cup winner Paul Pogba. Mourinho will be desperate to get United back on track after a 3-2 defeat to Brighton but the game is also important for Spurs as they look to improve on a generally poor away record against their biggest rivals under Pochettino. Despite Mourinho's travails, his opposite number at Spurs, who has two wins out of two games so far this season, still holds the utmost respect for the man who has won multiple trophies during a glittering managerial career. Asked what he has learned from Mourinho, Pochettino said: "A lot of things. I think for every single manager that is younger than him he was the ...

Inter Milan lose ground in Serie A with Torino stalemate

Inter Milan, considered among the Serie A title challengers this season, lost further ground by letting a two-goal led slip to draw 2-2 with Torino on Sunday meaning Luciano Spalletti's side have taken a single point from their first two games. Champions Juventus beat Lazio 2-0 and last season's runners-up Napoli came from two goals down to rally past AC Milan 3-2 on Saturday to both start their campaigns with the maximum six points. Inter Milan -- who returned to the Champions League after finishing fourth in Serie A last season -- had fallen to a shock 1-0 opening defeat to Sassuolo. The northerners looked in control in the San Siro with their Argentine top scorer last season Mauro Icardi setting up Croatian World Cup finalist Ivan Perisic for the opener after six minutes with Stefan de Vrij heading the second after 32 minutes. But Spalletti's side lost their way after an hour with Andrea Belotti pulling one back for Torino after a goalkeeping error by Samir Handanovic. New French ..

'I'm a club man': Mourinho insists United come before his future

- Jose Mourinho insists he is only interested in the future prosperity of Manchester United rather than his own position at the troubled club. Mourinho has found his future as United manager the subject of much discussion after a tempestuous period, dating back to a frustrating close-season transfer window. That led to conjecture that Mourinho was not happy with the efforts of executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who handles player signings at Old Trafford. Equally damaging has been Mourinho's relationship with star player Paul Pogba, which has come under close scrutiny after comments made by the France midfielder. Mourinho was in particularly dour and uncooperative mood ahead of his team's Premier League meeting with Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham on Monday, although, in one of his few talkative moments, he did reveal his gratitude for the support shown by fans over the first two games of the season. "The supporters were fantastic in both matches," said Mourinho. "Not for me, for ...

Rani scores hat-trick in India's 5-0 win over Thailand in women's hockey

Skipper Rani Rampal scored a hat-trick as title contenders India outplayed Thailand 5-0 to storm into the semi-finals of the women's hockey competition at the 18th Asian Games here today. After a barren and action-less first two quarters, the Indians got into the groove and scored five goals after the change of ends through Rani (37th, 46th and 56th minutes), Monika (52nd) and Navjot Kaur (55th) to register their fourth consecutive win. With an unbeaten record under its belt, the Indian women's team finished on top of Pool B with 12 points from four wins ahead of defending champions South Korea, who they had defeated 4-1 in their penultimate pool encounter. The first few minutes of the opening quarter saw Thailand maintain most of the possession but it was India who had an opening in the fifth minute when captain Rani's reverse shot from the right flank went just wide of the goal post. India won their first penalty corner in the same minute, but the resulting try from Deep Grace Ekka .

I couldn't read Tai Tzu, says Saina after bronze finish at Asiad

A 10th straight loss to the same opponent hurts and Indian badminton ace Saina Nehwal today conceded that she has just not been able to figure out world No.1 Tai Tzu-Ying given her huge repertoire of shots and an unpredictable approach. Saina was beaten in straight games by Tai Tzu in the semifinals of the ongoing Asian Games, setting the Taipei player up against another Indian in Olympic silver-medallist P V Sindhu in tomorrow's final. "I need to be quicker and have smooth movements, lot more shots as well, to finish the rallies (against her). Somewhere she will catch you. Every rally is a different rally with her. Most players have set pattern but she has got a variety of shots," Saina said after the 17-21 14-21 loss. "I definitely (need) the hand speed, bit more movement and not give her the chance to play her shots. There's a special quality. She is someone who is not easy to read. VAR troubles labeled a 'shambles' in Bundesliga

The video assistant referee system stole the spotlight on the opening weekend of the German league as frustrations with the technology carried over from last season. Players, coaches and fans are wondering how VAR can have worked so well at the World Cup in Russia in June and July, yet continue to cause problems in the Bundesliga. Several games were overshadowed by what Schalke general manager Christian Heidel called a "shambles," starting with contentious decisions in defending champion Bayern Munich's win over Hoffenheim on Friday. Franck Ribery earned a spot kick at 1-1 when he fell as he tried to get past a despairing tackle from Havard Nordtveit, then Robert Lewandowski was ordered to take it again when Arjen Robben encroached in the penalty area before the Poland forward tucked away the rebound after missing his first effort. Bayern, which had been struggling, went on to win 3-1. Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann was particularly critical of the VAR watching in Cologne for not .

His putter working finally in the last round, Anirban Lahiri rounded off the week with three-under 68 to finish T-71 in the Northern Trust, the first of the four play-off events at the FedExCup. The more important thing is he is still in Top-100 and stays around for the second leg in the coming week at Dell Technologies Championships, where he has a chance to make amends. Last year Lahiri squeezed into the third leg at BMW, where he was in Top-10 but failed to get into Tour Championships. Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau, starting with a four-shot lead, never let anyone come closer than two shots to card two-under 69 and finally win by four shots over Tony Finau. It also moved DeChambeau to the top of the FedExCup standings and close to being assured of one of the top five seeds at the TOUR Championship who have a shot at the USD 10 million bonus. Cameron Smith and Billy Horschel are tied for 3rd at 13 under. Tiger Woods, coming off a second place finish at the PGA Championship, closed ...

You need to have complete game to beat Tzu-Ying: Saina

Saina Nehwal says Tai Tzu-Ying's repertoire of shots and the ability to not restrict her game to a set pattern makes the World No. 1 from Chinese Taipei a very difficult player to beat at the moment. The Indian ace settled for a bronze medal at the Asian Games after losing 17-21 14-21 to Tai Tzu-Ying. This was the Indian ace's 10th straight defeat to the Taipei shuttler. "I need to be quicker and have smooth movements, lot more shots as well, to finish the rallies. Somewhere she will catch you. Every rally is a different rally with her. Most players have set pattern but she has got a variety of shots," Saina said. "I definitely (need) the hand speed, bit more movement and not give her the chance to play her shots.
