India's Shailja Jain wanted to prove that she is the best kabaddi coach in the world and she has done that with Iran women's team, albeit at the expense of her own country. Jain, who hails from Nashik, joined the Iranian team 18 months back and since then she has played a crucial role in their success. Iran today ended India's dominance at the Asian Games kabaddi by winning the women's title with a close 27-24 win in the final. "When I visited Iran first time after taking up the job, I said this is my mission, to prove I'm the best coach. And now we have the result," an elated Jain said. "Today our defence after the first five minutes was very tight, which was crucial to our win. And three of our raiders were excellent." Jain said after initially struggling to relay her thought process to the Iranian players, she decided to learn the local language. "Communication was not easy, so I learnt Parsi. Before the match I told the girls 'don't sent me back to India without the gold medal'. ..

Former World Champion Viswanathan Anand played out his fifth draw on the trot in the Sinquefield Cup, signing peace with Levon Aronian of Armenia in the fifth round here. After a rather forgettable show in the preceding Rapid and Blitz event, this is a comeback of sorts for Anand as he remained within striking distance of the five leaders but now needs to drive in top gear in the remaining four rounds to have any chance of a podium finish. The threat of an all-drawn games in a round had been looming for the last few days and it finally happened in the fifth round as none of the participants could make a decisive headway. As a result, the leader-board remained unchanged and crowded as it was after the fifth round with as many as five players sharing the lead on three points apiece. World Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway split the point with Wesley So of United States and the former was the only one who looked close to getting a decent advantage. However, Wesley kept his cool and ...

Veteran Manoj Kumar (69kg) eased into the pre-quarters but Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Gaurav Solanki (52kg) went out with a stunning opening-round loss, giving a mixed start to India's boxing campaign at the Asian Games here today. Manoj prevailed 5-0 over Bhutan's Sangay Wangdi to make the last-16 stage and set up a clash with Kyrgyzstan's Abdurakhman Abdurakhmanov, who got an opening-round bye. The 31-year-old two-time Commonwealth Games medallist was hardly tested in today's fight. The former Asian Championships bronze-medallist was up against an opponent, whose lack of experience showed quite early in the bout. Manoj had little trouble penetrating Wangdi's defences and kept him on the backfoot almost the entire bout. However, Solanki was beaten in a unanimous verdict by Japan's Ryomei Tanaka, the Indian 21-year-old's defence all over the place against the southpaw. The Armyman looked particularly drained after the second round and just could not find a way to prevent his ...

Twin defeats at the hands of Iran in the 18th Asian Games will rankle India for a long time but it also reflects that Kabaddi has truly become a global sport, says women's team coach L Srinivas Reddy. The Indian men's team had lost 18-27 to Iran in the semifinals yesterday. Reddy said India cannot take its medal for granted now as the rivals are watching the game keenly.
