Curran's 63 gives England fighting score, India need 194 to win 1st Test

Pacer Ishant Sharma ran through the middle order for a five-wicket haul but Sam Curran's fighting 63-run knock helped England set India a tricky 194-run target in the first cricket Test, here today. Ishant (5/51) took his eighth fifer while R Ashwin (3/59) and Umesh Yadav (2/20) shared the other five wickets as England were bowled out for 180 at the stroke of tea. India had England on mat at one stage as they had reduced England to 87 for seven but 20-year-old all-rounder Curran took the centre stage by scoring 63 runs off 65 balls and delayed India's victory march. Post lunch, Ishant did not allow Jos Buttler (1) to get settled, nicking him off on the second ball after resumption of play. In doing so, he put on 48 runs with Adil Rashid (16) for the eighth wicket. It was the only passage of play on this third day wherein English batsmen looked comfortable at the crease as Indian bowlers searched desperately for a breakthrough. Gill, Ghosh will look to extend their lead at MRF rally

: India's top rallyists Gaurav Gill and Amittrajit Ghosh will look to extend their lead in the MRF Rally of Coimbatore, the second round of the MRF FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship 2018, here over the weekend. The Mahindra Adventure teammates were at their dominating best in the first round, grabbing the first two positions and gliding to the top of the table. England 2nd innings fold for 180, India need 194 runs to win 1st Test

India bowled out England for 180 in their second innings on day three to set themselves a 194-run target to win the first cricket Test, here today. Pacer Ishant Sharma took five wickets and spinner R Ashwin three as England added 171 runs to their overnight score of nine for one. Sam Curran, with his 63-run knock, led a stunning rearguard fight to help the hosts extend their lead to 193 after being down 87 for seven at one stage. Tea was taken immediately after Curran was dismissed by Umesh Yadav. If India manage to overhaul the target, it will be their only seventh Test win on the England soil. Ricciardo to leave Red Bull for Renault at end of season

Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo is leaving Red Bull at the end of the season and joining Renault, the two Formula One teams announced on today. "Daniel Ricciardo has advised us that he is to leave the team at the end of the 2018 season," Red Bull posted on their website. Renault followed a little later by tweeting: "We are delighted to announce that @danielricciardo will join @RenaultSportF1 as race driver from 2019." Ricciardo is fifth in the 2018 drivers' standings and has won in China and Monaco this season. Renault supplies engines to Red Bull but have not won a race since fully rejoining Formula One three years ago. Their best-placed driver is Nico Hulkenberg in seventh, while 23-year-old Spaniard Carlos Sainz is 11th. Indian riders have good outings in practice sessions

: Indian riders, Rajiv Sethu and Anish Damodara Shetty, had fairly satisfactory outings during the three practice sessions as the fourth round of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship got underway at the MMRT track at Sriperumbudur near here today. Competing in the Asia Production 250cc class, the Idemitsu Honda Racing India team-mates, Sethu and Shetty, though off the pace by about three seconds, did generate hopes of strong results over the next two days when they go through the qualifying session followed by two races. Bengaluru-based Shetty, in his debut season in the championship, was quicker than Sethu of Chennai in two of the three sessions with a best of 01:51.2. Two-time Asian Tour winner golfer Rahil Gangjee carded a stunning 7-under 63 for an overall score of 11-under 269 to win the USD 75000 Louis Philippe Cup by three strokes here today. Ministry sanctions funds for Sushil's Georgia training before Asiad

The Sports Ministry today sanctioned Rs 4.95 lakh for star wrestler Sushil Kumar's two-week training programme in Georgia ahead of the Asian Games, besides clearing another Rs 25 lakh for athletes across seven other sports. The Mission Olympic Cell, at its meeting today, cleared funding proposals related to training, competition, support staff and equipment expenses. "Rs 4.95 lakh was sanctioned to Sushil Kumar for a two-week training programme in Georgia ahead of the Asian Games along with one support staff and two sparring partners," the Sports Authority of India said in a release. Shooter Tejaswini Sawant has been sanctioned Rs 1.24 lakh for sports science evaluation across four months of January, February, July and August. The training expenses of Akhil Sheoran for his pre-Asian Games training in Mumbai and Pune were alsosanctioned at the meeting. LS passes bill to create national sports varsity in Manipur

A bill to establish a National Sports University in Manipur to promote sports education was passed by the Lok Sabha today, as several members sought the inclusion of sports as part of a comprehensive education curriculum. The National Sports University Bill 2018, which seeks to replace an ordinance promulgated on May 31, was passed by a voice vote. Replying to the debate on the bill which had started on August 1, Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said the university would be set up in Manipur at a cost of Rs 524 crore to promote sports coaching and research. The legislation was earlier introduced in the Lok Sabha in August 2017, but could not be passed. Hence, the government had to come out with an ordinance, the Minister said. A sportsperson will be the university vice chancellor, while its academic council will also comprise sports personalities, Rathore said.
