Bulgaria's weightlifting federation said today that it had paid a $250,000 (214,000-euro) fine to lift a doping ban on its team competing internationally. The ban was imposed by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) in mid-2015 after Bulgaria's entire team of eleven athletes tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid that stimulates increased muscle tissue. Bulgaria's federation said at the time that it was not aware that the long-banned substance was part of a food additive used by its athletes for recovery. It also launched a court battle at the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a bid to overturn the ban from the 2016 Rio Olympics and lower the 500,000-dollar fine initially imposed by the IWF. The court ruled in December 2015 to halve the fine. Settling the fine allows Bulgaria to send 21 athletes to the European Youth Weightlifting Championships in Milan, Italy, from July 22-28, the federation said, adding that the fine was paid thanks to ...

Russia is likely to submit a bid for hosting an edition of the Summer Olympic Games, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday at his meeting with volunteers of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
ACF Fiorentina on Friday announced it had signed young Brazilian midfielder Gerson Da Silva on loan for one football season from AS Roma.
After hosting the World Cup, President Vladimir Putin says the country could bid for a future Summer Olympics. Asked about hosting a Summer Olympics in Russia for the first time since 1980, Putin says feasibility studies need to be conducted "but obviously we will organise major international competitions here," in comments reported by state news agency RIA Novosti. Russia held the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi but its legacy was tainted by allegations of widespread doping which led to Russian athletes being forced to compete as neutrals at this year's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. The next summer games Russia could host would be in 2032, because Tokyo, Paris and Los Angeles are already confirmed as hosting the 2020, 2024 and 2028 editions respectively.

The Indian Olympic Association today rejected the government's proposal to relax Asian Games selection norms for some specific sports, saying the Sports Ministry's concerns have already been addressed while picking the contingent earlier this month. The development comes after the ministry, on July 18, had urged the IOA to relax selection norms in specific cases concerning athletes or sports who/which could not qualify due to lack of exposure or non-participation in ranking events but have a strong chance of either winning a medal or finishing in top four. But the IOA stuck to its earlier criteria of picking athletes -- top six in individual events and top eight in team sports -- after a meeting of its Core Committee and Legal Committee. "In the letter dated 18.07.2018, the Ministry has asked IOA to find out if any of the athletes or team who could not qualify among top 6 in individual athlete and top 8 in the team to examine whether they can come in top 4 in the Asian Games," IOA ...
