Shubhankar misses cut as Robert rocks Scottish Open

Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma's maiden appearance at the Scottish Open ended in agony as he missed the cut after failing to hole a lot of putts at the Gullane Golf Club, here. It was a day when the Gullane course record was broken twice. First by Scotland's own Connor Syme who carded 62 in the morning and later in the evening by Japan's Hideto Tanihara, who took it down to 61. But the man giving a master class was Robert Rock, who is bogey free through 36 holes and at 13-under comprising 64-63 is leading the field by two shots over Tyrell Hatton (65-64) and Jens Danthop (64-65). Shubhankar, who started the day two-under, knew that he needed at least two-under to stay on for the weekend. He missed a birdie chance on both first and second holes and then gave away a soft bogey on fourth, when the putt slipped by. A birdie did come Shubhankar'a way on the short Par-4 sixth and it put him back to three-under. But a bogey Par-3 eighth dropped him back yet again. On the back nine, the ...

India thrash Kazakhstan 5-0 in Asian Junior Championships

Indian juniors started their campaign on a winning note by thrashing Kazakhstan 5-0 in the mixed team event on Day 1 of the Asian Junior Championships in Jakarta today. The Kazak players were no match to the rampaging Indians as world No 11 Akarshi Kashyap disposed off Iya Gordeyeva 21-5 21-4 to put India in lead in Group C. Akarshi was too good for Gordeyeva as the Indian did not allow any liberty in the opener, surging to a sizeable lead. The trend continued in the second game as well when Iya failed to land the shuttle across the court, committing several unforced errors. Akarshi, indulging in net-play, kept her opponent on the toes all the time before the Kazakh girl finally gave up. However, the ride for world No 9 Lakshya Sen was not that easy as he encountered some early problems before overcoming his rival Dmitriy Panarin 21-15, 21-12. With a 2-0 cushion, the Indians marched ahead and the women doubles was a foregone conclusion when Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker rolled past .

Croatian players will sacrifice World Cup final places if not fit - Dalic

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic is prepared to make changes for Sunday's World Cup final against France if some of his players have not recovered from their exertions in reaching football's biggest game. Dalic's men have been forced to go through three periods of extra-time against Denmark, Russia and England to become the smallest country in 68 years to make the final. "Tomorrow is the World Cup final. Simply, the players know what that is," Dalic said on Saturday. "One thing that brings me happiness is that all my players tell me if they are not 100 percent fit. They will concede and say they are not fit. They know what is at stake, but if they are unable to give their all they will tell us. They have such an attitude." Ivan Perisic, who scored and set up Mario Mandzukic's winner in a 2-1 semi-final win over England, was among five Croatian players to miss training on Friday. "We have nothing to train. We need relaxation and rest to gain freshness for tomorrow. We have some minor ...

Aditi misses cut at Marathon Classic in Ohio

Aditi Ashok performed poorly on the front nine for the second day in a row and shot a dismal 73 after a first round score of 75 to miss the cut at the Marathon Classic in Ohio. This must have been particularly disappointing for Aditi, who finished T-8 at the event last year to register her first-ever LPGA Top-10 finish. On the first day, she bogeyed first three and the fifth to go 4-over and never recovered despite two closing birdies. On the second day, she started from the 10th and birdied 15th and 17th to make some ground, but then a double bogey on the third and a single on the fourth ended her chances of weekend action. She has now missed four cuts in 14 events. Meanwhile, Brooke Henderson birdied the last two holes of the day to join Caroline Hedwall in a tie at the top heading into the weekend. The pair leads at 9-under par, one-stroke ahead of Thai Thidapa Suwannapura at 8-under par and two-strokes ahead of a group at 7-under par that includes Emma Talley, In Gee Chun and ...

Chopra set to qualify for Diamond League Final but Asiad schedule coming in way

Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has a good chance to qualify for the prestigious Diamond League Final on August 30 but the narrow gap between the meet in Zurich and his Asian Games event could leave the athlete in a tight spot. Chopra finished fifth in the Rabat (Morocco) leg of the Diamond League series yesterday with a best throw of 83.32m. He collected four Diamond League points from there and now has a total of 12 points to be placed at sixth spot in the standings. One Diamond League Meeting (which includes javelin) is scheduled for August 18 in Birmingham but Chopra is not taking part in it even though athletics events at the Asian Games start on August 25.
