Hima Das scripts history, becomes first woman to win gold in World Jr Athletics C'ships
Sprinter Hima Das tonight scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman athlete to win a gold at the world level as she clinched the top spot in the women's 400m final race in the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships here. The 18-year-old Das, a pre-tournament favourite, clocked 51.46s to win the gold, which triggered a wild celebration at the Indian camp. This was though not her personal best as she had clocked 51.13 last month in Guwahti at the National Inter State Championships. No woman before Das has won a gold medal in a World Championship at any level, be it youth, junior or senior. She is also the first Indian -- men or women -- to have won a gold in a track event at the world level. Running in lane number 4, Das was behind Romania's Andrea Miklos at the final bend but produced a stunning burst during the final stretch to cross the finishing line well ahead of the field. Former Poland captain Brzeczek takes over as coach
Former Polish international Jerzy Brzeczek was appointed head coach of the national team, the country's football association announced today. The 47-year-old replaces Adam Nawalka, whose highly-fancied national squad were eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup in Russia. Brzeczek was a midfielder who captained Poland, won 42 caps, scored four goals and was part of the team that were runners-up at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. He played for a string of Polish and Austrian clubs and had a stint with Maccabi Haifa in a 20-year career. After retiring he became a coach and led Wisla Plock to a fifth-placed finish in the Polish league last season. His first match will be away to Italy on September 7 in the new UEFA Nations League. Nawalka has said he feels responsible for the World Cup disappointment and will stand down as Poland manager on July 30.

HCA asks players to form associations as per Lodha recommendations
The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) today urged its players, both men and women, to form their respective associations immediately in conformity with the recommendations of Justice Lodha panel. It suggested that the players can form a Steering Committee with senior members like Shivlal Yadav, Arshad Ayub, VVS Laxman, SL Venkatapathi Raju and Noel David for the formation of the Association. In conformity with Justice Lodha Committee Recommendations, the players of Hyderabad Cricket Association (Men and Women) are requested to form respective associations immediately, HCA Secretary T Shesh Narayan said in a release. "The players have also been requested to elect a nominee to be on the Apex Council of HCA." Vinayak Samant is new Mumbai coach
Former Mumbai stumper Vinayak Samant has been appointed as the new coach of the Mumbai Ranji team for the upcoming season. The Mumbai Cricket Association also appointed Wilkin Mota as the coach of its Under 19 team. The announcements were made by MCA Joint Secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar after the cricket body's Cricket Improvement Committee met here for two days to decide on the new coach. The vacancy arose after former India stumper Sameer Dighe quit just after one season as the Mumbai coach. Mota succeeds Satish Samant as the under 19 coach.
