Three-time champion Novak Djokovic reached his eighth Wimbledon semi-final on Wednesday with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Japan's Kei Nishikori in a stormy Centre Court clash. Djokovic, 31, will be playing in his 32nd Slam semi-final where he will face either world number one Rafael Nadal or fifth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro. It will be Djokovic's first semi-final at a major since the 2016 French Open when he completed the career Grand Slam. The 12-time major winner prevailed despite picking up two code violations and accusing umpire Carlos Ramos of "double standards". "I think the first warning was unneccessary," said Djokovic, who was sanctioned in the second set for spearing his racquet into the court. "It didn't harm the grass. Kei did the same in the fourth set but wasn't warned. "The umpire said he didn't see. I don't think it's fair but it is what it is." Despite his anger, Djokovic still reeled off 10 of the last 12 games of the quarter-final. "It feels great to be back in ..

India present a different challenge than our recent opponents: Root

England batsman Joe Root feels India present a different challenge than their recent opponents including Australia and the home team will have to be at the top of its game to beat the Virat Kohli-led outfit in the three-match ODI series beginning here tomorrow. England had beaten Australia 5-0 in the home ODI series last month. India have been a really strong team in this format for a long time. They won (ODI series) last time they came over here. I know it was a very different side they played against but it is a really good marker to see where we are, said Root on Wednesday. We have played some really strong cricket in one day format and India are right up there as one of the best one day sides in the world. They present different challenges to the ones we have recently faced but we know that if we play to our potential, keep learning and improving we will be a difficult side to play especially at home, he added. For Root, this series holds prime personal importance. He couldn't ...

Where Virat wants to bat is important: Rohit on KL Rahul's batting position

KL Rahul has made a case for himself in the shorter formats with a string of good scores but his batting position against England in the three-match ODI series will primarily depend on where skipper Virat Kohli wants to bat, said Indian team's vice captain Rohit Sharma. Kohli has a phenomenal record batting at No 3 but Rahul has impressed one and all with his performance in the T20 Internationals coming one down. The skipper dropped himself at No 4 for the T20s against Ireland and England but it will be interesting if he follows the same strategy in the 50 over format too. Speaking of Rahul batting at 3 or 4, I don't know where he'll bat in ODIs. Certainly he has been in great form. We have got to see tomorrow where he actually bats. It will either be No 3 or 4. I don't know where the captain wants to bat. That will be the most important question," Rohit said on the eve of the first ODI against England. Rohit was all praise for Rahul's ability to play match winning knocks. I think ...

"Beautiful game' offers NATO respite from ugly divisions

Football came to the rescue of tense NATO leaders at a summit today, providing them with a welcome diversion from the tensions roiling the transatlantic military alliance. The group is facing one its most difficult meetings in years due to US President Donald Trump's criticism of the organisation and his targeting of German leader Angela Merkel. But with the World Cup semi-finals in NATO's traditional adversary Russia made up exclusively of members of the western military alliance, the heads of state and government in Brussels were able to turn to football to lighten the atmosphere. British Prime Minister Theresa May exchanged a team jersey with her Croatian counterpart ahead of today's night's England-Croatia semi final clash. Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel tweeted a pictured of May smiling with Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, saying that everything was "still all ok" between the on-pitch rivals. IPL has disrupted cricket: Atherton

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has offered more options and opportunities to younger players but it has also disrupted the game of cricket, feels former England captain Michael Atherton. Atherton spoke during the UK launch of former India captain Sourav Ganguly's book A century is not enough' at the Lord's. Atherton was joined by fellow England player Mike Gatting and former Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara for a discussion on cricket. Like any other industry, cricket has been disrupted. IPL has been a disruptive event, giving players options and opportunities, Atherton said, talking about the future of Test cricket in the wake of ever rising popularity T20 Leagues, offering big bucks to the players. We still sell Test cricket well here in England. The grounds in India may look empty (during Test matches) but we have to bear in mind that those are much larger grounds.
