James Rodriguez doesn't have 'serious injury', says hopeful Pekerman

Colombia coach Jose Pekerman said star midfielder James Rodriguez does not have a serious injury and hopes he will be fit to face England in the last 16 of the World Cup. The South American side take on England here tomorrow, but the status of James is unclear after he hurt his calf during the 1-0 win over Senegal last week. "We had good news after his medical tests. After his MRI (scan) we knew that he doesn't have a serious injury," Pekerman told reporters today. "We still have one-and-a-half days to see how he feels, and as always we hope that he will be able to play in the following games." The 26-year-old was the leading scorer at the 2014 World Cup, with six goals, but was limited to a substitute appearance in Colombia's opening match in Russia. He then played the full 90 minutes in a 3-0 win over Poland, but hobbled off in the first half of Colombia's final group game. If James is unable to play, Pekerman suggested he would again turn to Sevilla's Luis Muriel. "Muriel is an ...

New-look Federer breezes in Wimbledon furnace, Stephens crashes

Defending champion Roger Federer marked the start of his 20th successive Wimbledon with a new look and a comfortable 6-1 6-3 6-4 win over Serbia's Dusan Lajovic here today. Top seed Federer marched out on Centre Court dressed for the first time in gear designed by Japanese giant Uniqlo in a deal reported to be worth USD 300 million after a two-decade association with Nike. But everything else was familiar for the 36-year-old eight-time champion as the Swiss cruised past world number 57 Lajovic in just 79 minutes. It was the second successive year that Federer had knocked out the Serb at Wimbledon. "I'm very happy, I felt good from the start too which was nice and that was not the case last year against him. I remember I struggled early on a lot," said Federer who hardly broke sweat in Monday's 30-degree hothouse. "It was a really nice feeling. I always got the early break in each set and was able to bring it home." After just 20 minutes to complete the first set, Federer went on to ...

Morgan hopes to build on recent success against Australia

England skipper Eoin Morgan is hoping to "wisely" use the confidence and experience they have gained by drubbing Australia as they gear up to clash with India, which is likely to be a more challenging team for the hosts. England humiliated Australia 6-0 in the ODI series ahead of the limited series against India, beginning tomorrow. "Generally it is a different challenge particularly when you play against subcontinent teams. It normally exposes sides like ourselves, South Africa and Australia to spin, reverse swing and other different challenges to that we are normally used to. But we are in the middle of our summer and we have played a lot of cricket. Hopefully we will be able to deal with it, Morgan said on Monday. I don't think it's a case of putting it aside when there are huge positives to take from the Australia series. You can use a lot of that confidence and experience wisely. Having had a few days off and time to reflect on the series it's something we can call upon and might

IPL has helped us break barriers with England players: Kohli

The participation of English players in the IPL has only increased the "warmth" among rival players but on field, India skipper Virat Kohli expects a high intensity battle between both teams during the long tour beginning here tomorrow. While Jos Buttler stood out amongst the England players in the IPL, Kohli said the league helped them break the ice and know their rivals better. It (the IPL) is going to make relations between the two teams even better. I think because England haven't played so much IPL cricket, there was never that familiarity or that sort of warmth between the two teams as much as we have with the other teams," said Kohli on eve of the first T20 of the three-match series. "Purely because we didn't know the guys enough to be able to have conversations with them. I think this season has broken that barrier to a great extent. I heard lot of people are keen to go and play and they should. Why not, it's a great league to play in. As Jos has been saying for months now, ..

If we can carry that for the length of the tour then I will be very proud as a captain," Kohli said. The 29-year-old made it clear that the team will play the game in a fearless manner.Talking about the team combinations, Kohli said that the batting order is going to be flexible and not 'one-dimensional'."We are certainly going to be lot more flexible. Vekic stuns US Open champ Stephens at Wimbledon

Sloane Stephens became Wimbledon's first big-name casualty this year as the world number four crashed to a shock 6-1, 6-3 defeat against Croatia's Donna Vekic on Monday. Stephens was expected to mount a strong challenge at the All England Club after winning her maiden Grand Slam crown at the 2017 US Open and finishing as French Open runner-up last month. But the 25-year-old American, who has been in fine form since returning from foot surgery last year, had only gone past the Wimbledon third round once in six previous visits. She was beaten in the first round last year and maintained her poor record on grass with another limp display against world number 55 Vekic on Court One. Vekic, who sealed the upset on her fourth match point, faces Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova or Sweden's Rebecca Peterson in the second round.

Lahiri finishes tied-13th in US

Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri played an impressive stretch at the start of the back nine as he finished Tied 13th, a second successive Top-15 finish for him, at the Quicken Loans National. For Lahiri, who has been struggling with his scoring this year, the final round of 67 coming on the heels of a 65 in third round ensured a decent finish at T-13. This is his best apart from the three Top-10s he has had in the ongoing wrap-around season. Meanwhile, Francesco Molinari won his maiden PGA Tour title and that came by a massive margin of eight shots. Behind him there was Tiger Woods (66) in fourth place. Lahiri trudged along with nine straight pars but did not become frustrated. He was rewarded with a birdie on 10th, but quickly gave that away with a bogey on 11th when he hit into the water off the tee. On the 13th, he sank an 18-footer for a birdie and followed that up with an eagle 2 on the Par-4 14th, when he drove the green and landed inside 10 feet and holed the eagle putt. He then ...
