Russia want more after closing in on last 16

Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov hopes the best is yet to come for the World Cup hosts after they virtually sealed their place in the last 16 by easing past Egypt 3-1 despite Mohamed Salah's return. An own goal by Egypt captain Ahmed Fathi opened the floodgates on a sodden night in Saint Petersburg before goals from Denis Cheryshev and Artem Dzyuba bolstered Russian hopes they can defy pre-tournament expectations with a deep run into the latter stages. Salah did net Egypt's first goal at a World Cup in 28 years from the penalty spot after he had been hauled down 17 minutes from time, but it was too little, too late for the Pharaohs. Russia will be guaranteed a place in the last 16 and Egypt eliminated unless Saudi Arabia beat Uruguay today. "I hope there are many more to come," said Cherchesov when asked if he had enjoyed the best day of his life by almost certainly leading Russia into the knockout stages for the first time since 1986. A run of seven games without a win leading into .

Arsenal sign German keeper Leno as Lehmann leaves

Arsenal signed one German goalkeeper in Bernd Leno on Tuesday after confirming that another in Jens Lehmann would no longer be a member of their backroom staff. Leno, 26, was joining a Gunners now under the control of new boss Unai Emery, who succeeded the long-serving Arsene Wenger at the north London club after the Frenchman stepped down at the end of last season. "For me it's a dream to play for Arsenal," Leno told the Premier League club's website. "In Germany, Arsenal are so famous and when I heard it (transfer), I was a little bit nervous, but at that moment it was clear for me: I wanted to sign for Arsenal." Leno added: "I'll try to help the team to come back to the Champions League and to win some trophies. Arsenal belong in the Champions League. "Now it's a new chapter for the club. Eriksen the dangerman as Australia bid to shape World Cup destiny

Captain Mile Jedinak says Australia cannot afford to focus solely on dangerman Christian Eriksen when they face Denmark looking for the win that could save their World Cup campaign. A gut-wrenching 2-1 defeat to France in their Group C opener has left the Socceroos targeting a win on Thursday as they seek to qualify from the group stages. Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eriksen, who scored 11 of Denmark's goals in qualifying, is the key threat for Age Hareide's side at the Samara Arena. But Jedinak, who scored from the penalty spot against France, says improving on a disciplined performance -- which saw Antoine Griezmann hit a VAR (Video Assistant Referee)-assisted penalty before an Aziz Behich own goal in the dying minutes -- is also key for Australia. "We know he (Eriksen) is a fantastic player and obviously he's got a huge role to play for them," said Jedinak. "But we're not trying to focus on that. We'll definitely focus on them as whole and as a collective. We have to worry about ...

France vow to up the ante as World Cup rivals flounder

With their title rivals failing to fire, France have vowed to ramp up the intensity and put their stamp on the World Cup with victory over Peru here tomorrow. Didier Deschamps's team were far from fluid against Australia in their opening game in Russia, needing VAR (the Video Assistant Referee) and consequent Antoine Griezmann penalty, then an own goal about 10 minutes from time, to snatch a 2-1 win. But, while unconvincing, a French side featuring a misfiring front three of the usually prolific Griezmann and starlets Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele at least avoided embarrassment. With holders Germany losing to Mexico and Spain, Argentina and Brazil all drawing their opening games, the Peru clash is a prime opportunity for the French to stake their claim as the team to beat in Russia. "We took stock of what was done well or not so well and all agree that we will have to increase our physical intensity and improve our attitude in general," Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, the ...

England eye magical 500 after smashing new ODI record

England one-day captain Eoin Morgan said "the sky's the limit" for his record-breaking side, with a total of 500 firmly in their sights after their rout of Australia. Morgan's men posted a new all-time ODI record of 481 for six at Trent Bridge en route to a 242-run thrashing of their arch-rivals to go an unbeatable 3-0 up in the five-match series. Man-of-the-match Alex Hales top-scored with 147 on his Nottinghamshire home ground, just as he had done when making 171 in England's 444 for three -- the previous ODI record total -- against Pakistan at Trent Bridge two years ago. Opening batsman Jonny Bairstow made 139 on Tuesday, his fourth hundred in six ODIs that included a century in a shock loss to Scotland just before this series. Meanwhile Morgan, who missed the second ODI in Cardiff on Sunday with a back spasm, smashed England's fastest fifty at this level, off just 21 balls. "I think (we're) definitely very close (to 500)," said Morgan. "In the position we found ourselves today, ...

FIFA World Cup: Russia beat Egypt 3-1

Russia defeated Egypt with a fantastic 3-1, in a Group A fixture of the FIFA World Cup in St Petersburg, racking up their second victory in a row.Russia made a breakthrough through a sheer fluke in the 47th minute through the Egyptian captain Ahmed Fathy, who under pressure from Artem Dzyuba, took a wild swing at it and swiped it into his own net. This is the fifth own goal of the tournament so far.Denis Cheryshev doubled Russia's advantage by scoring a goal in the 59th minute after he finished from Mario Fernandes' pull-back. He cleared himself from the markers and shot it low into the net from close range.Russia were on easy street and sealed the victory as Artem Dzyuba scored the third goal for them in the 62nd minute.Liverpool forward Salah's penalty kick when Egypt already trailed 3-0 was a petty reward for his hard work and was not enough to let Egypt sail through. England beat Australia by 242 runs in 3rd ODI, win series

England set a new world record total of 481 for six as they beat Australia by 242 runs to win the third one-day international at Trent Bridge. Victory gave 2019 World Cup hosts England an unbeatable 3-0 lead in their five-match series with the world champions. Hundreds from Alex Hales, who made 147 on his Nottinghamshire home ground, and Jonny Bairstow, whose 139 was his fourth century in six matches at this level, helped England surpass their own previous all-time ODI record of 444 for three against Pakistan set at Trent Bridge in 2016. World champions Australia could only manage 239 for nine in reply as they suffered their 14th defeat in 16 completed ODIs. This was also Australia's heaviest defeat at this level, in terms of runs, surpassing a 206-run loss to New Zealand in Adelaide in 1986. By contrast, this was England's biggest victory in the format, topping their 210-run win against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 2015. The series continues at Chester-le-Street, the headquarters of ..

Russia sour Salah's return to close in on last 16

The return of Mohamed Salah from injury couldn't prevent World Cup hosts Russia virtually sealing their place in the last 16 by beating Egypt 3-1. An own goal by Egypt captain Ahmed Fathy opened the floodgates on a sodden night in Saint Petersburg before goals from Denis Cheryshev and Artem Dzyuba furthered Russian hopes they can defy pre-tournament expectations with a deep run into the latter stages. Russia will be guaranteed a place in the last 16 and Egypt eliminated unless Saudi Arabia beat Uruguay. Salah was making his first appearance since injuring his left shoulder when falling heavily after being dragged to the ground by Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final just over three weeks ago. In yet another shocker of the day, 27th ranked Senegal defeated eighth-ranked Poland 2-1 in their opening match of Group H at the ongoing 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup at the Spartak Stadium here on Tuesday. This came after 61st ranked Japan edged past 16th ranked Colombia 2-1 from the same group earlier in the day.An own goal from Thiago Cionek in the 37th minute and a quick counter-attack goal from M'Baye Niang in the 60th minute gave Senegal the 2-0 lead in the game, which witnessed plenty of poor mistakes by the Poland side.Poland did manage to pull one goal back through Grzegorz Krychowiak in the 86th minute, but it was late for the European team to find an equaliser.A slow start saw neither side gain control of the midfield until Senegal had the first clear chance in the 18th minute. The African side, which shocked France on their World Cup bow in 2002, gradually started to dominate the game. Thanks to a number of mistakes and poor passes by Poland, Senegal gradually took over

Sri Lanka's captain, coach and manager charged for conduct contrary to spirit of the game

The ICC Chief Executive David Richardson on Tuesday charged Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal, coach Chandika Hathurusinghe and manager Asanka Gurusinha with a breach of Article 2.3.1, a Level 3 offence, which relates to conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game. The three have been charged for their involvement in the Sri Lanka cricket team's refusal to take to the field in St Lucia at the start of Saturday's play, which caused a two-hour delay in the start of play. This action is alleged to amount to a serious breach of the Laws of Cricket and to be contrary to the spirit of the game. If any of the three plead not guilty, then the ICC, as per Article 5.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, will appoint a Judicial Commissioner from its Code of Conduct Commission to determine the matter. Sri Lanka captain Chandimal gets 1-Test suspension for ball tampering

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has been suspended from his side's third and final Test against the Windies after he was found guilty of ball tampering during the second day's play of the second Test, which concluded at Gros Islet on Monday. During a hearing held at the end of the St Lucia Test, in which video evidence was used in the presence of the Sri Lanka team management as well as the match officials, Chandimal admitted putting something in his mouth but wasn't able to recall what it was. ICC Match Referee Javagal Srinath handed Chandimal the maximum punishment available under the code, i.e. two suspension points and a fine of 100 per cent of his match fee. As two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player, Chandimal will now miss the day/night Barbados Test, starting from Saturday, June 23. Furthermore, and because two suspension points correspond to four demerit points, these have been added to Chandimal's ..
