For path-breaker Real Kashmir players, football more than just a means of livelihood

A hope for a better life not just for themselves but also for the troubled state they have put on the national footballing landscape -- for the path-breaking Real Kashmir FC players, the 'beautiful game' is far from being merely a means to earn a livelihood. Their odd jobs, family backgrounds, and determination to rise above it tick all the boxes for the story that is Indian sports. But just as any other story like theirs, it was nonetheless inspiring when the club, founded just a couple of years ago, qualified for the elite I-League. A daily wage earner, who hopes he never has to go back to that job, a small-time private telephone company employee, and a cricket buff-turned footballer -- it is a diverse group that makes up the team. But what unites it is the game, famously described as a matter bigger than life or death by Bill Shankly -- the man who transformed a second division Liverpool into the force that it became in Europe. "It is very difficult to get a secure job in Kashmir.

Anand holds Carlsen, stays in title contention

Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand played out an easy draw with reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway to stay in contention for top honours after the end of the fifth round of Altibox Norway Chess tournament, here. Having won two games in a row with white pieces earlier in the tournament, Carlsen could do little against Anand this time and the Norwegian was not quite happy with his play. It was a Sicilian through some transposition wherein Anand surprised Carlsen early in the opening. Carlsen in fact came to confessional box and declared early that although the damage was limited he was not very optimistic about getting an advantage. As it happened in the game, the players reached an identical pawn formation soon and Anand had to find some precise moves to keep Carlsen's pieces at bay. The peace was signed after 45 moves. Chinese star Ding Liren finally decided to call it a day from the tournament after his hip fracture that resulted in a surgery. The surgery went .

We have a difficult game against India: Kenya coach

Kenya started their Intercontinental Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory against New Zealand but their head coach Sebastian Migne feels that his the side have a difficult game against hosts India. "We're happy to win, it was a fantastic opportunity for my players to discover a new continent and opposition. It was difficult for us to find good balance in the team because of the unavailability of players," Migne said. "We were lucky to score in second half. The attitude was better. This will help the confidence of our players. I'm happy for my players, I'm glad with the local coach who started the camp in India," said Migne, who landed here just a day ahead of the match. India had spanked Chinese Taipei 5-0 in the opening encounter of the tournament, courtesy a hat-trick by skipper Sunil Chhetri, and Migne feels that the game against India tomorrow will be a difficult one. Won't be another like me & Ambrose but new gen will create own stuff: Walsh

West Indian pace legend Courtney Walsh doesn't foresee another one like him or Curtly Ambrose coming along in international cricket but neither does he believe that fast bowling is on the decline. "You are not going to get bowlers like me and Curtly anymore because we are long gone, retired," Walsh told PTI in an interview when asked about his legendary partnership with the lanky Antiguan. "The new generation will create its own stuff, bring its own technique. When I played, I used what Wesley Hall and Andy Roberts taught me. It keeps evolving. If you can get those senior players to pass on their tips and use it with what is happening now, you will only be a better bowler," he reckoned. The exponential growth of slam-bang T20 cricket has forced the fast bowlers to come up with a plethora of variations. The pacers end up using those same tricks even in the longest format where sheer speed and accuracy remain the most potent weapons. Walsh, who formed one of the most celebrated pace ...

India bundle out Malaysia for 27 in 142-run win in Women's Asia Cup

As many as six Malaysia batswomen fell for duck as India bundled them out for just 27 to register a resounding 142-run victory in their opening Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup match here today. Electing to bat, India scored 169 for 3 in their allotted 20 overs, riding on senior player Mithali Raj's unbeaten 97 off 69 balls, and then shot the home side out in just 13.4 overs in a completely lop-sided match at Kinrara Academy Oval here. Pooja Vastrakar grabbed three wickets for just six runs with her medium pace while the spin duo of Anuja Patil and Poonam Yadav, who did not concede any run, took to wickets apiece as the Indian bowlers ran riot over the clueless Malaysians. Only five Malaysian batswomen opened their account and none could manage to make a score in double-figures. Sasha Azmi top-scored with nine runs from 10 balls. Malaysia lost half of their side within five overs, reducing to 12 for 5. Captain Winifred Duraisingam (5 off 21 balls) and Zumika Azmi (4 off 15 balls) stayed at ..

I dreamt about playing professional football in childhood, says Micheal Sheen

Micheal Sheen says he wanted to become a professional football player in childhood but he had his doubts about making it to the top. The 49-year-old actor says he anyway would not have had a long stint at the sport due to its age-based requirement. "When I was younger, my dream was to play football professionally, but I doubt I would ever have made it to the top tier. Even if I had, my career would have finished while I was still a young man. Even though acting can be just as precarious, I like to think my career could go on for as long as I wanted it to," Sheen told Radio Times magazine. The "Passengers" star believes football has the power to unite people from across the globe. "Wherever I've gone in the world, football brings people together. It's like an international language. Soccer Aid is what led me to working closely with UNICEF I'll always be grateful for that. "I've just travelled to Bangladesh to see how UNICEF is helping there. Even in the refugee camp I visited, we ...

England prepares for World Cup with 2-1 win over Nigeria

England relied on goals from Gary Cahill and Harry Kane before slackening in the second half to beat Nigeria 2-1 in a World Cup warmup match. On his first England appearance since October, Cahill headed in the opener in the seventh minute from Kieran Trippier's corner in front of 70,000 fans at Wembley Stadium. Raheem Sterling set up Kane to double England's lead in the 39th before Alex Iwobi reduced the deficit in the opening two minutes of the second half. After a week in the headlines over a gun tattoo and returning late for England duty, Sterling courted more controversy when he was booked for simulation for hitting the ground all too easily as goalkeeper Francis Uzoho came off his line to claim the ball. "I had a decision to make whether to play him after turning up late," England coach Gareth Southgate said. "But, actually, that wasn't a decision after he started to come under fire from every other direction. "It wasn't about getting a response. The most important thing I do in .
