The BCCI may have created extremely popular and successful Indian Premier League (IPL) but the Indian board has not done "enough" to market Test cricket, revered by the purists, says former India opener Gautam Gambhir. Known for his straight talking, the two-time World Cup winner put forth his point in presence of CoA chief Vinod Rai and CEO Rahul Johri. "I don't think BCCI has marketed Test cricket as well as they have done with ODIs and T20s. I remember a Test match at Eden Gardens against West Indies (in 2011). India batting on the first day and there were 1000 people," Gambhir said. "Imagine Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman playing and there are only 1000 people," the senior opener said during launch of cricket historian Boria Majumdar's book 'Eleven Gods and Billion Indians'. Seasoned spinner Harbhajan Singh felt Test cricket should be taken to tier-2 cities but Gambhir said it's hardly a solution. "I don't know but they have messed it somewhere. May be cut down on ..
For a club like Atletico Madrid, success never comes easily, but Wednesday's Europa League final victory over Marseille served to underline just how far they have travelled in the years since Diego Simeone became coach. The fiery Argentine said the 3-0 win over the French side in Lyon, achieved thanks to Antoine Griezmann's brace and a late Gabi goal, meant "much more than just winning a trophy". Simeone took over a club that had been in a near constant state of disarray for more than a decade and almost immediately revived their fortunes. But after one Europa League, one Copa del Rey and a La Liga title in his first two and a half years at the helm, the last few seasons had been defined more by the near misses. Two Champions League final defeats in agonising fashion against city rivals Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016 had many thinking Simeone might be tempted to accept an offer from one of Europe's super clubs. Yet the 48-year-old has toughed it out through a FIFA-imposed transfer ban, .

With the World Cup less than a month away, there is a budding national team in the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh with no one to play against. The ethnic Armenian team in the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh has the shirts and the shoes, and even practices five days each week on an artificial field a short distance from the center of Stepanakert, the territory's capital. But that's about as far as the team goes. "UEFA doesn't let us participate anywhere," said Artsakh defender Aram Kostandyan, who wishes he could inspire the younger generation of players and show them "why they are playing football." The reason for the lack of opponents has nothing to do with sports and everything to do with politics. The Nagorno-Karabakh region, as it's known by its Soviet name, is considered part of neighboring Azerbaijan by the international community, located just north of Iran in the South Caucasus region. But since a six-year separatist war ended in 1994, it has been controlled by the

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone spoke with an air of resignation when asked if the club can stop Antoine Griezmann from leaving. The France striker's stock rose higher when he scored two expert goals on Wednesday night to help the Spanish club win the Europa League with a 3-0 win against Marseille. "If he stays with us, we'll continue to grow and develop. He's a lad who has given so much," Simeone said. "We've always competed at the highest level. In sporting terms we're not very far away from those who have deeper pockets than us." Those deeper pockets belong to Spanish champion Barcelona, which this season signed two of the world's four most expensive players in midfielder Philippe Coutinho and winger Ousmane Dembele. Spanish media has been rife with reports in recent weeks that Griezmann will soon be on his way to join them. Even Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has acknowledged his club met with Griezmann's agent in October. "He always made the right decisions and I hope ...

The remaining other countries, if we can play at 110 per cent, we can surprise them and put them under pressure," Sikki told PTI. The Asian Games will be held from August 18 to September 2 in Indonesia. The 24-year-old Sikki bagged a mixed team gold and a bronze in women's doubles with Ashwini Ponnappa at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games last month and her performance fetched her a recommendation for Arjuna Award. "I think I deserve the award and I really hope I get it this time. I was recommended last year also but no one in badminton was awarded, so I am hoping I get it ...
