To toss or not? ICC cricket committee to discuss at meeting this month

Should international cricket 'toss away' the toss to ensure an even playing field? The relevance or rather the fairness of the tradition, which is as old as the game itself, will be up for discussion at the International Cricket Council's cricket committee meeting scheduled on May 28 and 29 in Mumbai "Test cricket's fundamental starting point may be scrapped, as the ICC's cricket committee prepares to debate whether or not the coin toss should be removed as a way of reducing home ground advantage in the looming Test Championship," 'ESPNCricinfo' reported today. The toss of coin has been a part of international cricket since the very first Test, between England and Australia in 1877 to decide which of the two competing teams get to bowl or bat first. The coin is flipped by the home captain and the call is made by the visiting skipper. But its relevance has been questioned in recent past with critics saying that the practice was resulting in unfair advantage to host teams. "There is ...

Consistent CSK seek further improvement in dead rubber against Daredevils

A formidable Chennai Super Kings will be aiming to tie up loose ends ahead of the play-offs when they take on a listless Delhi Daredevils in a rare dead rubber of the Indian Premier League here tomorrow. With CSK comfortably qualifying for the play-offs, the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led squad is eyeing the top spot on the points table alongside Sunrisers Hyderabad, whom they defeated comprehensively in their previous game. The consistency CSK have shown in the tournament after missing out in the previous two seasons is commendable and it seems they were never out of action. They have been solid even against the mighty Sunrisers, who arguably have the best bowling attack in the tournament. Also, CSK adjusted well in Pune, their forced home ground after games were moved out of Chennai due to the Cauvery water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Their opening combination of Ambati Rayudu and Shane Watson has worked brilliantly while chasing big totals as well as setting them. Rayudu, ..

I stuck to my plans, says Bumrah

Having a clear plan for in-form batsmen like Lokesh Rahul and just focusing on executing it did the trick, said Mumbai Indians seamer Jasprit Bumrah after he helped his side beat Kings XI Punjab in an IPL match here. Bumrah snapped up three crucial wickets as defending champions Mumbai Indians kept their play-off hopes alive by notching up a thrilling three-run win here last night. "To have a clear plan is very important whenever you bowl. I plan and I back myself in whichever situation I'm bowling. I was just focusing on that and it was a good day, so it went well," Bumrah said at the post-match press conference. "We already knew he (Rahul) had been batting well throughout the tournament. In the bowlers' meeting we usually talk about every player. We were bowling second and I had a chat with (bowling coach) Shane Bond and (mentor Lasith) Malinga that there would be dew, said Bumrah, who produced a brilliant bowling display to take 3 for 15. Man-of-the-match Bumrah's most important ...

Disgraced Warner to play Sydney club cricket

Disgraced former Australian vice-captain David Warner will start his road to redemption by playing club cricket with Sydney's Randwick Petersham, officials said. The opener is serving a year-long ban from state and international cricket for his part in a plan to use sandpaper to tamper with the ball during the third Test in South Africa in March. But he is free to play at club level and is set to make a return to the field in September. Randwick Petersham club president Mike Whitney, a former Test fast bowler, said Warner will play in at least three of the first four matches of the season. "We're delighted to have him. He's one of the best players Australia has had since World War II," he told the local Southern Courier newspaper on Wednesday. "He's been speaking to one of our club officials and he has committed to the first three or four rounds of the season. Why it is only three or four rounds at this stage I don't know." Warner has also been linked with playing in the Northern ...

Ledecky smashes own 1,500m record in pro debut

Five-time Olympic swimming champion Katie Ledecky smashed her own 1,500m freestyle world record by five seconds in her first race as a professional. The 21-year-old American star touched the wall in 15min 20.48sec at the Pro Swim event in Indianapolis, obliterating her previous best of 15:25.48 set at the World Championships in Kazan in 2015. "I was pretty surprised when I saw the '20,'" Ledecky said with a little laugh, adding that she thought as the swim unfolded that she would be somewhere under 15:30, maybe. "When I saw the 15:20 I was pretty shocked," she said. This week's meet in Indianapolis is Ledecky's first since turning professional following the NCAA collegiate championships in March. "My first pro swim -- that's one I'll never forget," said Ledecky, who added that so far she hadn't felt any different in her first meet as a professional. Ledecky won gold in the 800m at the 2012 Olympics and followed it up with four golds and a silver at the Rio Olympics two years ago. The .

Griezmann fires Atletico Madrid to Europa League title

Antoine Griezmann was the hero for Atletico Madrid as the French striker scored twice in their 3-0 win over Marseille in Europa League final in Lyon, allowing his club to win the trophy for the third time in nine seasons. It is Griezmann's first major title with Atletico, and a fitting way to bow out if he leaves at the season's end, with Barcelona tipped as his next destination. Griezmann -- brought up in Macon, just 70 kilometres from Lyon -- scored once in each half, his lethal finishes coming either side of Marseille losing Dimitri Payet to injury, the French team's captain coming off in tears. Griezmann now has 29 goals this season, although it was Gabi's late strike that sealed the victory. "This is a reward for me after I left home aged 14, for all the work I have put in, the suffering," said Griezmann, who has spent his whole career in Spain but had only previously won one Spanish Super Cup. Atletico's triumph comes after agonising defeats to Real Madrid in the Champions ...

WADA maintains suspension on Russia doping body - official

The World Anti-Doping Agency has maintained its suspension of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) over its failure to follow a roadmap necessary to regain compliant status, officials said. Speaking after WADA's executive committee met behind closed doors ahead of a Foundation Board meeting on Thursday, director general Olivier Niggli said there had been no change in RUSADA's status. "There was no need for a vote (...) nothing has changed," Niggli said. Another executive committee member confirmed the suspension was still in force. "It's still the status quo," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The decision to maintain RUSADA's "non-compliant" status had been expected. RUSADA has been at the centre of a standoff between WADA and Russian authorities ever since the body's suspension in November 2015 following revelations of a vast doping scandal involving Moscow's main drug-testing laboratory. WADA had warned RUSADA will continue to be ruled non-compliant until ...
