Lahiri has a lot to make up for this week at PLAYERS

Anirban Lahiri has more than a few things to set right this week at the PLAYERS Championships as he is in danger of dropping out of top-100 for the first time in more than four years. He is also yet to register a top-10 finish in this calendar year and has not tasted a win since the Hero Indian Open in February 2015. Yet, he feels he is striking the ball well but not scoring well. This week, at the PLAYERS Championships, the biggest event outside of the Majors, and the flagship event of the PGA Tour, Lahiri could set right most, if not all the things. And there could not be a better setting than the PLAYERS. This week, the event includes a very strong field led by world No. 1 Dustin Johnson, current FedExCup points leader Justin Thomas, last week's champion Jason Day, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and defending champion Si Woo Kim, for the USD 11 million showpiece which will feature every single player in the top-50 of the world. Lahiri also has a score to settle with the PLAYERS, the ...

MI threat looms large as KKR up against odds

Hosts Kolkata Knight Riders run the risk of slipping away when they face resurgent defending champions and 'nemesis' Mumbai Indians in an IPL clash, here tomorrow. KKR have an onerous task at hand as they need to defy history against Mumbai Indians, who have won 17 of the 21 matches against the hosts across 11 seasons -- the most wins for an IPL team against any opponent. Their 13-run defeat at the Wankhede on May 6 stretched their losing streak to seven matches and 1125 days -- KKR's last win over Mumbai Indians was way back on April 8, 2015. While KKR are fast running of time, the most successful IPL franchise, MI, are peaking at the right time, a revival that's quite akin to their triumphant campaign in 2015 when the Rohit Sharma-led side won seven of their last eight matches en route the title. Both teams have four matches left in the round-robin league, but KKR have won five matches one more than MI as a loss for any of the two sides may complicate their play-off aspirations. For

Langer taps Paine as ODI skipper as new Aussie era starts

New Australia coach Justin Langer today named Tim Paine as one-day captain for next month's tour of England as they look to open a new era after a damaging ball-tampering scandal. Langer, who has been entrusted with restoring Australia's battered reputation, was widely expected to select Paine in his first major decision as coach. The 33-year-old wicketkeeper has already been appointed Australia's Test captain after his predecessor Steve Smith received a 12-month ban for his part in the ball-tampering affair. The five-match ODI series in England will be the Australian team's first outing since the disastrous South African tour and the players are sure to face intense scrutiny. Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said Cricket Australia had faith in Paine's ability to lead the 15-man squad in England, with Aaron Finch as his vice-captain. Despite Australia's woes it has been a heady rise for Paine, who only returned to the national set-up in November after several years on the sidelines,

Superb SRH defend yet another low total to beat RCB by 5 runs

Table toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad produced yet another spirited bowling effort after skipper Kane Williamson's crucial half-century to beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by five runs and virtually assure themselves a place in the play-offs of the Indian Premier League here today. Sunrisers not only register their fifth consecutive win of the tournament today but also defended yet another low total riding on the performance of their excellent bowling unit. Sent into bat, Sunrisers managed a modest 146 but came back strongly after the break riding on yet another gutsy bowling display to restrict RCB to 141 for six. By virtue of this win, Sunrisers have consolidated their position at the top of the table with 16 points from 10 games. RCB, on the other hand, are standing on the verge of elimination with just six points from 10 matches. Besides needing to win their remaining four games, RCB's fortune will also depend on the outcome of other matches. Chasing the modest target, Parthiv Patel ..

Ozil joins Germany injury list, but vows to be at World Cup

Mesut Ozil has joined the list of Germany stars currently injured, but the Arsenal midfielder insisted today he will be fit for their World Cup title defence in Russia. "It's a pity I missed yesterday's match with my back injury," Ozil wrote on his Instagram account after sitting out Arsenal's 5-0 rout of Burnley on Sunday. Siraj, Southee bowl out SRH for 146

Skipper Kane Wliiamson struck a vital half-century before pace duo of Mohammed Siraj and Tim Southee joined hands to help Royal Challengers Bangalore bundle out Sunrisers Hyderabad for a modest 146 in an Indian Premier League match here today. Williamson scored 56 off 39 balls while Shakib Al Hasan made 35 but it was Siraj (3/25) and Southee's (3/30) fiery spell that eventually put brakes on Sunrisers' charge. Sent into bat, Sunrisers did not have the best of starts as they lost openers Alex Hales (5) and Shikhar Dhawan (13) early. To make matters worse for the hosts, Manish Pandey (5) too didn't last long, handing out a simple catch to skipper Virat Kohli off Yuzvendra Chahal (1/25) in the ninth over. Thereafter, Sunrisers captain Williamson and Shakib stitched 64 runs off just 50 balls for the fourth wicket to keep the hosts afloat. While Shakib played the second fiddle, Williamson showcased his class striking the balls to all parts of the ground without taking any undue ...
