North and South Korea combine teams at table tennis worlds

Ping pong diplomacy is bringing North and South Korea together at the table tennis world championships. The women's teams from the two countries, originally competing separately at the competition in Sweden, decided today to combine their teams rather than play each other in the quarterfinals. "When I informed the board of directors about this development, the unified team received a standing ovation from the delegates who showed their sign of support to this historic move," ITTF president Thomas Weikert said. The move follows intense recent cross-border diplomacy by state leaders at home. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in vowed last week to work toward the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula. The combined Korean team at the table tennis tournament will next play Japan in the semifinals tomorrow. "(It's) an important statement to promote peace between our countries through table tennis," the South Korean team said. In March, North ..

Infantino met Putin in the Black Sea resort of Sochi as Russia races against the clock to put the finishing touches on preparations for the June 14-July 15 final. The first World Cup staged in eastern Europe will be the most expensive ever and comes in the heat of flaring tensions between Russia and the West. But Infantino lavished praise on Russia's preparations and said the tournament was shaping up to be the best one yet. "You are working to make this World Cup the best World Cup ever," Infantino told Putin during a nationally televised meeting. "The feedback from all our experts at FIFA are extremely positive. South Africa to fight testosterone rule

South Africa's athletics federation today said it would challenge new rules governing female athletes' testosterone levels, which affect the nation's Olympic champion Caster Semenya. Athletics South Africa (ASA) said it would "challenge the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) on these new regulations as we have found them to be skewed". The new policy targets women who naturally produce unusually high levels of testosterone. Athletes classified as "hyper-androginous" will have to chemically lower their testosterone levels to 5 nanomoles per litre of blood to be eligible to run any international race of 400 metres up to the mile. The ASA said that, after consultation with South Africa's sports minister, it would take the IAAF to Lausanne's Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if it did not rethink the rule. The IAAF has defended the rule change as scientifically sound arguing that "hyper-androginous" women with heightened testosterone levels enjoy an unfair ...

New Zealand weighing first Pakistan tour since 2003

New Zealand say they are considering their first cricket tour to Pakistan since 2003 but Australia today shut the door on an appearance in the insurgency-wracked country. New Zealand Cricket is carrying out "due diligence" after a request to play a Twenty20 game in Pakistan, where the team hotel in Karachi was hit by a deadly suicide blast in 2002. "At the moment NZC is doing due diligence on the request and consulting with security providers, the government, and the players," a spokesman told Radio New Zealand. "We will respond to the PCB when this process has been completed." Pakistan will host tours by Australia and New Zealand in October and November, with the matches due to be played in the United Arab Emirates. But the Pakistan Cricket Board has asked both teams to play the tours' Twenty20 games in Pakistan, where international cricket is only now creeping back after a long hiatus. International tours to Pakistan stopped in 2009 when gunmen attacked the touring Sri Lankan team's
